BB Cream is the latest Hollywood Makeup craze

Popularized by Korean stars, Hollywood's makeup artists have turned to BB cream for a fresh-faced look.

The latest beauty buzzword for the Hollywood hotlist is BB or Blemish Balm creams. Almost every celebrity makeup artist carries some type of BB cream to layer on the skin of some of your favorite celebrites: Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, Mila Kunis, the Spice Girls and Sandra Bullock to name a few!

They brighten skin in the same way a primer does, evens out complexion like a lightweight foundation, covers blemishes like a concealer, has the hydrating properties of a moisturiser, soothes skin like an anti-inflammatory and contains UV protection.

This new hybrid product, which sits between skincare and make up, gives skin a natural luminous look - meaning BB creams are fast becoming the beauty secret of celebrities and their make-up artists worldwide.

BB creams originated in Germany where a dermatologist gave it to her clients who had undergone laser treatments, which left the skin sensitised and vulnerable to the sun.

BB creams then quickly become popular in Korea and across Asia in the mid-Noughties and most recently amongst A-listers and make-up artists for their amazing skin nourishing benefits, which also leave skin primed and with a healthy glow.

If you’re anything like me, so time poor and stressed out juggling kids, deadlines and work that some mornings I barely have enough time to run out the door without having passed a brush through my hair, let alone having a seven-step skin regime that would put a beauty obsessed Japanese Harajuku girl to shame - BB creams seem like some sort of salvation.

Lieve Declercq, Origins Global Spokesperson of Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology explains: 'BB Creams should provide broad-spectrum SPF protection from UVA and UVB rays to protect against sun damage but can also help conceal hyper-pigmentation, acne, scars and blemishes, hydrate, whitening as well as having anti-aging benefits'

Rodial, the go-to beauty brand of celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga, have just launched their new Rodial BB Venom Skin Tint (£35, www.rodial.co.uk), which comes in three shades, rather fabulously named Capri, Hamptons and St Barts.

For the eye area, there is a triple-action brightening concealer loved by Angelina Jolie & Whitney Port, Rodial BB Venom Eye (£29, www.rodial.co.uk), which comes in two shades: a cooler pink-toned shade called Aspen and a warmer yellow tone called Malibu (you get it), which sold out within a week of their launch this summer.

The success of these BB creams is based on SYN-AKE, a neuropeptide, which inhibits the contraction of innervated muscle cells, thus providing a mild, non-invasive temporary Botox-like effect on fine lines and crow’s feet.

The BB venom skin tint even made an appearance at the closing ceremony of the Olympics this summer when the Spice Girls' make-up artists used it - the result being that the girls looked like they hadn’t aged a day since they taught the world how to Spice up their lives more than 10 years ago.

Jessie J is also a huge fan of BB creams and her new softer, more sophisticated look can be put down to James Read BB Tan Face Pen, £22.50, www.jamesreadtan.co.uk, which she is said to carry around with her everywhere.

Clever James Read, the celebrity tanner to the stars whose fans include supermodels Lara Stone and Rosie Huntington- Whiteley, has just launched a range of 11 at-home professional self tanning products and his BB cream pen with added gradual fake tan is the fastest selling product in the range.

If you’ve been suffering with dry, post-summer, back-to-school skin which is now taking a battering from the cold, wet and windy conditions outside, check out the Body Shop’s BB offering. Their All-in-One BB cream, £12, www.thebodyshop.co.uk) is highly rated, and has sold at the rate of one every 27 seconds since launching in August this year.

It contains skin protecting and soothing vitamin E and hydrating community fair trade Marula oil for 24 hour hydration that not only leaves you feeling good about your skin but also your conscience.

As well as tackling dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, redness and radiance, at the very heart of a BB cream is a high SPF protection, which I love because there are now no more excuses not to protect skin from the damaging and aging effects of the sun all year round, as advised by skin experts and dermatologists.

Giorgio Armani’s new Luminessense Bright Revelator Greige BB Fluid SPF 50/PA++, £60, www.armanibeauty.co.uk was modeled by Megan Fox, and might be an eye wateringly pricey option when it comes to a BB cream but it does help you get your glow on and leaves all skin tones including the very deepest ones looking even - as well as having one of the highest SPF protection on the market.

Some BB creams especially those created for the Asian market that can now be found in the UK can sometimes leave a white or chalky appearance on deeper skin tones but if you’re looking for light to medium coverage as well as anti- aging skin benefits grab yourself Origins A Perfect World BB SPF 15 Age-Defense Tinted Moisturizer with White Tea, £27, www.origins.co.uk - recommended by Kim Kardashian.

It smells heavenly with an essential oil blend of sweet orange, lemon and spearmint, which will put you in a good mood at the start of a hectic day and also comes in six shades with a blend of mineral pigments for super quick and easy airbrushed-looking skin.

What is bb cream exactly? The commercial says it's not a foundation, but it evens the color on your face, so technically isn't it a foundation? I could read the article I guess. I'm too lazy tho.
lizrocks 9th-Oct-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
I thought 'bb' was slang for baby and it was some sort of weird placenta thing.

It's supposed to have the same consistency of a moisturizer so technically it's not a foundation, yes.
starrbaby 9th-Oct-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
It's a glorified tinted moisturizer. It WON'T work if you have jacked skin. Not saying you do, bb.
cityxpretty 9th-Oct-2012 03:03 am (UTC)
I feel like it gives me the same coverage a foundation would but it blends a lot easier and doesn't look like I'm wearing makeup like foundation can. IDK, it's somewhere in between moisturizer and foundation but a step up from tinted moisturizer...kind of.
crazyventures 9th-Oct-2012 03:21 am (UTC)
I think of it as a thicker tinted moisturizer (at least the one I use, which is the hot pink label BB cream from Skin79)
brightstarmara 9th-Oct-2012 11:16 am (UTC)
I've tried 2 different ones (not the above mentioned expensive shit). It's tinted moisturizer. And the woman at the beautystory I go to told me she would recommend still using moisturizer under the BB.

To be honest, I'm not feeling or seeing a difference with using daycream and then liqued foundation.
volare 9th-Oct-2012 02:58 am (UTC)
Huh. My daughter's 13 and has a portwine birthmark around her nose, I wonder if this'd help, she's so freaking self-conscious about it.
rachelbojangles 9th-Oct-2012 03:08 am (UTC)
hmm, prob not. most likely a thick concealer like professional grade like dermablend
volare 9th-Oct-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
Yea, that's basically what she's using now but it gives her this hellacious dermatitis which just makes the whole thing worse, and itchy and bumpy on top of that. Her dermatologist said laser surgery was possible in the future if it didn't fade before she's in her late teens, but it's being stubborn.
elvenqueen86 9th-Oct-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
You could try tattoo cover up, since it's designed to cover up pretty much anything. I hardly ever use mine to cover up my tattoos, but I use it sometimes for blemishes, works great!
maffinoyobiai 9th-Oct-2012 03:41 am (UTC)
I dont know about birthmarks, but I have some bad acne scars on my face and Missha BB cream covers it all and actually reduced the redness and marks over time. It conceals beautifully without me needing anything else to pile on my face.
leia1912 9th-Oct-2012 04:31 am (UTC)
If you really want to cover the birthmark, go look up Dermablend. You can buy it (or could buy it) at Sephora and Macy's, as well as other outlets. It's meant to cover and stay--so it's very reliable. And by cover, I mean truly cover: Dermablend is what they use to cover burns, tattoos, and other major skin issues. My sister used to work for a cosmetics line and she used Dermablend to cover a large mark---a burn, I think--on a teenage girl's face. I still remember that story because the poor kid started crying when she realized that there was a makeup that could help her.
reveeling 9th-Oct-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
Try the Kat Von D tattoo concealer! It's amazing and feels really nice on the skin.
akasha6915 9th-Oct-2012 06:46 am (UTC)
It would do nothing really for it, but might help with the rest of her skin.

How big and how dark is it? And what is her activity like? If she wants something to cover for long periods of time, including swimming and heavy sweating, I suggest looking into Kryolan's Derma Color. This stuff was designed for stage, to cover portwine stains, and tattoo's, and is designed to even be worn while doing heavy activity, see theatre. The only thing with it is that this make-up is heavy duty, so it must be cleaned off well, and have good skin care with it.
fishinista 9th-Oct-2012 08:07 am (UTC)
Hi I'm going to chime in. I have a port wine stain (on my arm), I've done a lot of research about it, and this is going to be incredibly specific!

This won't do anything for port wine stains - port wine stains are blood vessel lesions, not skin lesions. I don't think there are any creams that reduce PWS besides concealers (which I never used since mine is on my forearm, it would have probably cost me $30 at a time, and I never really wanted to conceal it anyway).

The only way to really get rid of it is seeing a dermatologist who does laser treatment for vascular lesions and lasering it all off.

I get it done because of the risk of cobblestoning (the birthmark can get really lumpy when you get older, like 40s-50s), and it's on my dominant hand. Otherwise I would not get it done, honestly. People ask me about it sometimes, but generally I don't get hassled (and I'm a med student, so I meet a lot of strangers and have to put my hands on them - like 0.1% give me grief).

If you have any other Qs about PWS happy to answer.

apothecaries 9th-Oct-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
I've been using The Face Shop's "Face it, power perfection" or some shit. Thats what it says in English at least. I got it from a Korean market. Its Natural Beige.

cityxpretty 9th-Oct-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
I do too. My skin doesn't agree with a lot of foundations. I'm either too oily or too dry and it's such a mess. BB cream saved me, I swear! Which brand do you use?
nachomuchacho 9th-Oct-2012 03:08 am (UTC)
I read the article, but what's your opinion of the differences between it and foundation? I definitely wanna give it a try
greenfairy_87 9th-Oct-2012 03:41 am (UTC)
IKR? It's perfect for days when I'm too lazy to use all-over foundation with a sponge. I use Misha perfect cover.
balcarin 9th-Oct-2012 04:09 am (UTC)
Same, but just for day coverage + a concealer over the top. I use the Garnier one. Mostly it moisturizes, covers my slightly uneven tone, and the sunscreen in it has kept my acne down.
sky3205 9th-Oct-2012 12:05 pm (UTC)
I wear La Roche Posay and it's amazingggggg and has 50+ spf protection.
Its not called bb cream though, the package says tinted cream.
leopard_legs 9th-Oct-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
I got some free samples of the garnier bb cream and I liked the light coverage but the smell bothered me!

my skin's got to shit again so no bb cream for me right now anyway haha

I still haven't tried it

My face gets way too randomly red to use something lightweight tbh
halfdressedliar 9th-Oct-2012 08:32 am (UTC)
Redness is the only reason I don't use attempt one of these. I pretty much stay red on my cheeks close to my nose and on my forehead.
slut_talk 9th-Oct-2012 12:21 pm (UTC)
Mine does, too, and I'm telling you this actually helps!!

I use Missha's Perfect Cover one and I feel like it works a lot better than foundations. I got weird hot flashes and stuff (praying for early menopause rn) and just get really red in general sometimes and since I've been using it I feel like my face doesn't get as red, and when it does it's actually covered up better.
lolbye 9th-Oct-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
I got the skin79 bb cream recently and it really doesn't seem to do...anything. It's not heavy enough to cover my scarring. I wear it anyways, though, because I'm too lazy to put on actual makeup.
crazyventures 9th-Oct-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
What color label did you get? I use the hot pink one but usually only when I'm not breaking out
lolbye 9th-Oct-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
I also got the hot pink one. It helps the giant bags under my eyes a bit, but that's it. It doesn't make me break out, though.
pamuya 9th-Oct-2012 03:46 am (UTC)
the hot pink one doesnt do shit for me :/
acharmedlife 9th-Oct-2012 04:09 am (UTC)
Try BRTC. I have some discolouration from acne scars and VERY dark circles under my eyes, and it covers decently. Not enough to cover a bright red pimple when I have one, but definitely enough to gloss over the scars.
batty_gal 9th-Oct-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
BB creams then quickly become popular in Korea and across Asia in the mid-Noughties

because my poor ass can't afford anything but those
haedria 9th-Oct-2012 03:03 am (UTC)
lol this was gonna b my question i got a bunch of samplers for the drug store brands but they don't seem to be doing anything for me
shutterspeed 9th-Oct-2012 03:40 am (UTC)
They're basically just tinted moisturizer.
ecrivais 9th-Oct-2012 03:42 am (UTC)
almost ALL the "bb" creams that have come out in the US are not actual bb creams. Bb creams tend to give a fuller coverage than these sad, watery as hell, tinted moisturizer wannabes. BB creams also tend to have higher spf.

Like srsly, bb creams make your skin look flawless.
tadashee 9th-Oct-2012 05:22 am (UTC)
Which one do you recommend? Will they work for lighter south Asian skin? I had a lot of acne years ago and now my pores are huge. I was on retina which was amazing, but I had to get off because I am doing laser hair removal. I miss it so much. I need something for my pores right now. Also I started using porefessional and I don't see a differential but my friends said my skin looked nice ad if I had put on makeup.

some really good asian ones are only 20 dollars. misha perfect cover bb cream is amazing. on amazon it's only like $17.
balcarin 9th-Oct-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
I use the Garnier one and I really like it/it agrees with my skin.
pin_stripe 9th-Oct-2012 04:17 am (UTC)
i fuckin love the Maybelline one, but it's basically just a tinted moisturizer on steroids
innocentanalyst 9th-Oct-2012 04:22 am (UTC)
I heard somewhere that Cover Girl just repackaged their tinted moisturizer and slapped on the BB cream label.
holly_berri 9th-Oct-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
yeah, most western brands are complete shit. but tbh you can some of the better bb creams in little shops at your local korea/china town or something similar.

and if not, there's this nifty thing called Fair and Lovely that only costs around $7. it's the south east asian version of bb cream and it's actually insanely effective.
odd_fish_stick 9th-Oct-2012 04:36 am (UTC)
the garnier one is not too bad
foureyedgirl 9th-Oct-2012 04:50 am (UTC)

fancypiink 10th-Oct-2012 03:46 pm (UTC)

Does MAC make bb creams?

I feel like they are the only brand here that makes decent makeup for darker skin.
slinky 9th-Oct-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
Mac does but idk if they come in colors now. I tried theirs and it was seriously terrible, did absolutely nothing lol
narco_chan 9th-Oct-2012 04:55 am (UTC)
they did for a bit i believe and are released in only some areas (maybe Europe? ) but they were a MAJOR flop and stopped it pretty early on i think
cityxpretty 9th-Oct-2012 03:06 am (UTC)
I think they may be expanding tbh. A year or so ago most brands just had a "one size fits all" color.
kniferomance 9th-Oct-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
Came in to ask where the black people were, tbh. I guess I'm SOL on this product.
ponpiri 9th-Oct-2012 04:01 am (UTC)
Yeah they really don't. And most darker people have discoloration issues so it's already hard to find the right foundation that doesn't make the skin look grey in certain spots.

degsassy 9th-Oct-2012 03:00 am (UTC)
BB cream is always grayish and looks too oily for me but it's great for when I need a quick cover up and even tone skin but don't want a heavy foundation.

Also I never have anything to contribute to make up posts here (my favvve) but I've been using this Boscia cleanser and it is AMAZING. It is a WARM face wash. It's hot and feels wonderful on my skin!

Good/cheap asian brands are Holika holika, Missha, Skin79 and skin food.

Shiseido. It's expensive even in Asia, but really good. Cheaper one is Hada Labo, but can be drying so add moisturiser into the BB cream.
