Zac Efron guzzles duck embryo in video

Zac Efron turned fans' stomachs on U.S. late night TV in America on Thursday when he sucked a duck fetus from an egg.

The movie hunk opted to try the delicacy balut during a lunchtime trip to a volcano in the Philippines and he asked a pal to videotape the moment he peeled open the egg and guzzled down the contents.

He aired the home video during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and revealed he actually quite liked the broth-like snack.

He told the host, "There was a fully-formed little bird in the egg... It wasn't that bad. I ate, like, three more that day.

"There was, like, a hard part with, like, the beak and stuff. I didn't want to eat that."

For the uninitiated, balut is a duck embryo that is boiled and eaten in the shell. It is believed to be an aphrodisiac.

Zac is promoting his new Lee Daniels movie, The Paperboy, where Nicole Kidman pees on him.

The weirdest? Octopus.
Foul, rank, disgusting, chewy. I can't.
losviluppo 6th-Oct-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
His reactions to eating it made me cringe more than what he was eating
x_rose_tyler_x 6th-Oct-2012 09:09 pm (UTC)
Eating (cooked) octopus is so normal over here I always laugh when people tell me it's weird for them.

But then again I've had to explain to some Americans that tuna pizza is a thing over here and they freaked out too.
losviluppo 6th-Oct-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
The texture was weirder than anything for me. I'm not a huge seafood fan so I couldn't stomach it.

Tuna pizza doesn't sound weird? Mind if I ask where you're at?
halfslytherin 6th-Oct-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
THIS lol
robinsparkle 6th-Oct-2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
I agree about the octopus part (and I'm in america lol)
nebulous_mirage 6th-Oct-2012 11:23 pm (UTC)
tuna pizza's also a thing in china. my cousins love it, haha
miwa201 7th-Oct-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)
tuna pizza is actually my favorite pizza (I'm from Europe).
winninghearts 6th-Oct-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
noooo what octopus were you eating

yeah it's a little chewy, but I can't imagine how it'd be foul or rank unless there was something wrong with it

mmmmmmm
manu19 6th-Oct-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
i love octopus! i could eat it like chips
cukoo4cocopuffs 6th-Oct-2012 10:25 pm (UTC)
I had octopus once and it coated my mouth in a disgusting slime. Same thing happened to my friend at that dinner. UGH. But I think I've had it again in some Portuguese dishes.
beaddddddsss 6th-Oct-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
Octopus is so good, tho. Seafood cream soup with little crunchy octopus pieces? Ugh, delish.
gimmemoarjosh 7th-Oct-2012 12:25 am (UTC)
I don't know.. ostrich? Frog? Squid? Goat? The goat thing is only weird because I was living in South Korea and we thought it was ground beef, and made Manwich (it was sent from home in a care package) with it. It tasted a bit off. lol

I generally stick to cow, chicken, turkey and pig when it comes to creatures. My ex-boyfriend ate dog while there.
chibik3r0 6th-Oct-2012 09:03 pm (UTC)
Oh no. People eating foods that aren't normal by North American standards. How horrific.

And most bizarre thing I've eaten was probably horse, served deli-meat style. Would not eat again.
it_llbeyourname 6th-Oct-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
i would rather frolic in fields of horse meat and bathe in horse blood than eat an egg with a curled up, wet baby animal inside.
ben_superdetka 6th-Oct-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
lmfao
i sort of agree actually
vivifromff9 6th-Oct-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
IA, folks are always so horrified by what we eat (I'm Filipina); it feels a bit insulting, and I'm kinda self-conscious about people taking jabs at what I eat all the time... :/

Edited at 2012-10-06 09:19 pm (UTC)
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
lol i didn't want to go there but not surprised @ ontd

what does horse taste like?
fuckyess 6th-Oct-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
except he didn't say it was horrific? he said he liked it and ate more.

it's different. just like some north american foods are to others.

OH BUT IT MUST BE RACIST SINCE WE'RE WHITE WESTERNERS.
neko_oni 6th-Oct-2012 10:32 pm (UTC)
Me too. But I had washimi --horse sashimi. Odd but tastey.
nekonekox 6th-Oct-2012 10:37 pm (UTC)
Yeah, because that's the problem with eating the fetus of a duck. That it's not normal by North American standards.

I'm Venezuelan and I find it disgusting. Also, I wouldn't eat baby pork even though it's a normal thing for Christmas in Spain.
it_llbeyourname 6th-Oct-2012 09:03 pm (UTC)
i honestly CANNOT BELIEVE that anybody would do this. this delicacy is actually one of my biggest phobias, that and slugs and mayonnaise and cats that have been hit by cars. it isn't even just a food phobia. it's a full blown fucking phobia phobia.
quizblorg 6th-Oct-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
I|m a really picky eater (and am grossed out by mayonnaise as well), but I like slugs.
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
what do slugs taste like? are they meaty like escargot?
fuckyess 6th-Oct-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
fucking mayonnaise is one of the foulest foods anyone can eat
chantemarissa 6th-Oct-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
mayonnaise is the white devil.
it_llbeyourname 6th-Oct-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
i wish i was so tolerant. slugs are a serious issue. when it rains i have to restrain myself from using a flashlight at night just in case the slugs have come out to play
lovedhurtlost 6th-Oct-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
Idky, but I'm dying at cats that have been hit by cars. Wasn't expecting it. I can't look at any type of road kill. I always look away when I'm driving.

Edited at 2012-10-06 09:36 pm (UTC)
ben_superdetka 6th-Oct-2012 09:44 pm (UTC)
wait, what's wrong with mayonnaise??
audrey_za 6th-Oct-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
Mayonnaise is the worst. People don't get that I will NOT eat it. It's ruined many a sandwich for me when people put it on when I ask for it without. (I'm so picky I won't just wipe it off with a napkin because the taste is still lurking there)
theratwhispers 6th-Oct-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
What's the most bizarre thing you've ever eaten?

Fish eyeballs.
manu19 6th-Oct-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
what looked like expired green eggs in India i nearly threw up just by the smell of it
beaddddddsss 6th-Oct-2012 11:08 pm (UTC)
I just went, "LIKE KAZAAM," inside my head.
dubiously 6th-Oct-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
Duck tongue. Pretty good tbh.
chantemarissa 6th-Oct-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Chicken Nuggets.

I'm a very picky eater.
tankxgrrl 6th-Oct-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
lol..
chikachika_boom 6th-Oct-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
lol
cityxpretty 6th-Oct-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
Hahaha. McDonald's chicken nuggets are quite bizarre though!
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
thats nasty
aglows 6th-Oct-2012 09:08 pm (UTC)
Good on him for eating balut. I could never eat it!
greatestheroine 7th-Oct-2012 12:25 pm (UTC)
Me too! Back when I was really young, my doctor told me to eat like balut everyday since I was anemic. It was just... argh. Now I can't even look at it without cringing. I'd say I got traumatized by it, haha
manaconda 6th-Oct-2012 09:08 pm (UTC)
i don't think balut is grosser than any other kind of meat, but i personally can't even eat a meat dish if it still has bones :(

Edited at 2012-10-06 09:09 pm (UTC)
fuckyess 6th-Oct-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
i can't eat meat with bones either. buffalo wings gross me out so much. it's more bones than meat!
skay210 6th-Oct-2012 09:08 pm (UTC)
Alligator and sea urchin. Those aren't that weird though.
cxco 6th-Oct-2012 09:09 pm (UTC)
I've had fugu fish and beef tongue

Edited at 2012-10-06 09:10 pm (UTC)
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
what does fugu taste like? beef tongue's not that weird

Edited at 2012-10-06 09:20 pm (UTC)
halfslytherin 6th-Oct-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
i'm curious to know too
cxco 6th-Oct-2012 10:06 pm (UTC)
Regular fish, nothing out of the ordinary. We did it mostly for the 'life-threatening' experience.
ncc_gqmf 6th-Oct-2012 10:11 pm (UTC)
Fugu's pretty overrated. I've had it both cooked and raw, and it's not terrible, but it's nothing special. I've had it a few times, and a couple of times it's been accidental, and it's just like, "...oh, okay."
sviibwhapp 6th-Oct-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
Fugu will always make me think of the Simpsons episode where Homer thought he had 24 hours left to live.
cruel_idol 6th-Oct-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
fried calamari is delish!
flawlessglitch 6th-Oct-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
I had alligator nuggets once but that isn't all that interesting. It tasted like bland chicken.

I also had a bite of a burger made of bear meat, until they told me what it was and then I couldn't eat it any more. *shrugs* I like bears.

Edited at 2012-10-06 09:12 pm (UTC)
summerswings 7th-Oct-2012 06:05 am (UTC)
Same! I ate alligator tail and it tasted like the kind of deli processed chicken or turkey you buy in a packet. Bad.
justpeachythnks 6th-Oct-2012 09:12 pm (UTC)
kangaroo is DELICIOUS tbh
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)

:(
justpeachythnks 6th-Oct-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
noooooooo, i already have enough guilt after getting stuck in a vegan protest today :(
robinsparkle 6th-Oct-2012 09:44 pm (UTC)
omggggggg :(
beaddddddsss 6th-Oct-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
i could never laaaawd
screwhim 6th-Oct-2012 09:51 pm (UTC)
what meat is similar? i imagine it'd be really tough like goat or venison
winter_lace 7th-Oct-2012 06:14 am (UTC)
I won't lie. Kangaroo is niiiiiccceee. So is crocodile. And I think emu too.
winninghearts 6th-Oct-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
idk if I've eaten anything I'd call particularly weird

I don't think it's that weird of a food at all, but I was tricked into eating rabbit as a kid and I didn't appreciate that
fuckyess 6th-Oct-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
my grandpa has this joke i've heard a million times (but he's my grandpa so i don't care) about a little girl who is almost tricked into eating rabbit but she asks for a wing. zing!
manu19 6th-Oct-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
my parets tricked me into eating my own pet rabbit as a kid!
benicebitch 6th-Oct-2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
Oh my GOD! That's awful! :(
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
your parents sound scary as hell in this post

like idek with the whole eating the water-the-pig-was-killed-in thing
neko_oni 6th-Oct-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
WTF.
winter_lace 7th-Oct-2012 06:18 am (UTC)
My mum loves rabbit but I refuse to eat it now. I actually dislike it. It's stringy
kapuki234 6th-Oct-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
he's really branching out
