Carrie Underwood does a flawless cover of Coldplay's "Fix You" on VH1's Unplugged

We’ve been struck by a bad case of Underwood fever over here at VH1, with her Behind the Music set to air this Sunday and her Unplugged ready to go live the week following, and the only thing that can fix us is this cool cover Carrie did of Coldplay‘s “"Fix You". Carrie and her crew learned the song while in London so that they could “pay tribute,” she said, becasue “they were so nice to welcome us there, and they have so much talent right there.” Carrie’s usual country twanging is as sonically distant to Coldplay’s arena rock balladry as Oklahoma is to London, but here she has managed to turn the song so that it sounds straight from her wheelhouse. Buoyed by strings and with her ever strong vocals promising to “guide us home and ignite our bones” left us chilled.

she doesn't seem like she'd be fun to be around, she seems like one of those people that would tell you how being a vegan is better than eating meat, while i'm eating meat & shit & side-eyeing my angus burger

Why even do this cover, though? To me it doesn't feel different at all, it just sounds like she's singing their song. I mean, it's not like it's bad or anything, but just seems unnecessary.

Maybe they didn't have much prep time to work something out. I'd rather it sound good and close to the original than to be reworked and sound awful.

More often than not, when I hear someone do a cover and they change it up a lot, I sit there and think "why couldn't you just sing it like the original, it's a cover, not a sample" but that's just me, I like hearing the same song just sung w. a different voice.

Yeah, I suppose it is a matter of opinion. I pretty much feel a straight cover is like is pretty much pointless.

I like to see the style of the song totally change to conform to the artists' style and I think that is where the talent lies.

I'm not sure that I've ever even heard a Carrie Underwood song, so I don't know if this is her style, but it just feels so similar to the OG.

Yeah I'm with you. I also hate going to a concert and hearing the artist sing their songs exactly like they are on the album. If I want to hear an original song exactly the way it was recorded, I'd listen to that song for a lot cheaper and without drunk people screeching in my ear.

I just get kind of annoyed when people change it up too much, I guess that might be bc I haven't hear a cover that was unique that I've liked though.

I love stuff like Cat Power's "Bathysphere", Neko Case's "Runnin Out of Fools", moonlasso's "Summertime Clothes", Chelsea Wolfe's cover of "The Modern Age", Susanna Wallumroed's "Jailbreak", Summer Camp's "Christmas Wrapping", I mean, I could go on forever. I'm not horribly offended when someone makes a cover that is musically similar but tonally different, but I would prefer that they fully make it their own.

I'm definitely going to give some of the ones you listed a listen :) I've been thinking more about it, and I think it has more to do with WHO is doing the cover, it all depends on the artist and how capable they are of covering/re-working the song.

She is one of my favs and for the longest time I wondered what her stance on gay marriage was so when she came out in support of it I wanted to do cartwheels lol.
