Morrissey throws more shade: on Facebook, The Killers, Russell Brand

What are your thoughts on Twitter and Facebook? Would you have to be held at gunpoint to join them?

I know nothing about Twitter, and I can only roughly assess Facebook. Twitter seems useful in some ways because you are no longer at the mercy of press interpretation, but Facebook is too self-gratifying. You might think you have 900 friends, but it's an illusion. You might as well live in a lighthouse off the Scottish highlands. People think that they are in touch because they print a few lines everyday, but to me it seems like the essence of loneliness.

What was the last great song by a new/recent act you heard? And are you a fan of The Killers who regularly cite you as an influence?

I find it difficult to be anything other than honest, and this makes me sound like an old crank. I can't say ‘Yes’ when I mean ‘No’ - my jaw literally locks. Lonely Day by System of a Down would be the last song I absolutely loved, and Born That Way by James Maker is the greatest single of the last decade. The Killers asked me to sing with them this month in New York, but I'm just not the type. I stick to my own backyard.

Russell Brand is a friend and fan of yours - do you have a favourite example of his celluloid work?

I love Russell, but the films are a bit cheeky-wonky-daft-Dudley Moore British-pottiness for me, and Russell's voice has a higher pitch with each film - it's almost a squeal now. I wish he'd do King Lear, or something, because he'd be magnificent.

Cackling rn, omg this guy. He knows he's Brandon Flowers' lifelong idol, that's so cold. I agree with what he says about Facebook though.

toilandblood 2nd-Oct-2012 04:34 am (UTC)
i love the smiths but him as a person always gives me conflicting emotions like the other day there was a story about him helping a fainting lady in a shop, now this... :/
akasha6915 2nd-Oct-2012 07:43 am (UTC)
The Smiths mean a lot to me, but him as a person can go get hit by bus for being such an asshat.
raised_eyebrows 1st-Oct-2012 10:53 pm (UTC)
Eh, by Morrissey standards, this was relatively tame.

According to Morrissey, because of the amount of brown people invading London.

This reminds me of Kstew.

astormatsea 1st-Oct-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
he's right about facebook tbh, that shit has started to define lives and it weirds me out
shadowpiranha 1st-Oct-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
It's true, and it boggles my mind that people put so much stock on what goes on in a fucking website. It freaks me the hell out!
jigglemypuff 1st-Oct-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
I'm always shocked when people friend people they used to hate in school. You know it's all a competition on who has the best fake life.

I serve so many families a day where the kids and parents just ignore each other at the table, reading their facebook walls or whatever. It's awkward. I don't even think they notice when I drop off their food.
la_guillotine 1st-Oct-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
I never go on FB any more but I have a fear of deleting my profile and losing touch with...people I didn't communicate with for years and didn't miss. Weird, yeah.
celtic_thistle 1st-Oct-2012 11:47 pm (UTC)
True story. I've been on it since the early days and it's BLOWN UP. It used to be such a college-kids thing and now it's just insanely huge. It IS useful to stalk people I hate, though.
cluelessraf 1st-Oct-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
TBH my facebook is all about pop culture. That's all I post and majority of my status are not about my life.
fuckyess 2nd-Oct-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
no.

people that complain about fb are ridic.

you don't like it? stop going there. it's a website. you don't have to do it.

Ugh. But at least I agree with what he says about Facebook, it really is for lonely people though. Especially the ones who make a billion statuses and send you annoying notifications.
kurtvonnegut 1st-Oct-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
it's true. i quit facebook a while back but when i had it i felt like all the people i knew who had the fullest lives rarely updated while the rest who i felt had lame lives updated the most trying to convince people their lives were awesome.
so_chic_doll 1st-Oct-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
lol lawd. I just can't with those people. I hide them immediately.

I use it to keep in touch with my friends, since we're scattered throughout the country.

I feel like people who don't use facebook often are "forgotten" about tbh... like if they're not someone you see all the time, you might forget to invite them to do things & such. Even with cellphones & texting, I think people tend to communicate to each other more through social media.

Everything has it's downside though.

/good lord, i cannot type tonight

ia especially because a lot of people make events on facebook, even for little get-togethers. none of my friends really do it, but i've noticed with my younger sisters & their friends (they're 19 & 16), even small parties/bonfires/etc are on facebook. i don't think they text-invite anyone who's not on facebook....because everyone they know is on facebook.
jigglemypuff 1st-Oct-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
Facebook is boring unless you're in school and want people to see you partying. Or you're a mom and want to brag on your kid all the time.
snuffyqui45 1st-Oct-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
I use (and only made it) Facebook b/c most of friends are out of the country though. We have watch-along posts and everything lol.

Also it's how I keep up w/ their art.
celtic_thistle 1st-Oct-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
I know. I have a second cousin once removed who's a little younger than my mom, a sweet lady, and she is a little developmentally disabled and her mother (who she lives with) is an absolute BEAST to her and always puts her down, etc. It's always been that way. She is super lonely and all she does is message me. :/ idk what'll happen when her horrible mother dies. She has no life skills thanks to her mother and whole family always being shitty to her. My mom sneakily sends her presents but there's nothing more we can do for her except try to wade through her loooong and rambling messages. :(

Also, the young moms who don't work and put "Full Time Mommy!" as their occupation and do nothing but post about little Jhaydynn's first shit in the potty or how little Haeleigh won't go to sleep make me want to rub ground glass in my eyes. I hide that rubbish from my feed.
fuckyess 2nd-Oct-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
so, connecting with friends/family you don't get to see often = lonely? oh. lol.
michelleantonia 2nd-Oct-2012 09:44 am (UTC)
I have an allergy to personal shit on FB. I just use it to follow bands, tv shows, stores, and blogs. I've hid about 90% of the people I'm friended with.
pixiedivision 3rd-Oct-2012 02:15 am (UTC)
I have a friend who just got his first bf and he's quite a social guy so he's not 'lonely' but he posts so many statuses, so many of them are cringeworthy pretentious self indugent bullshit. He's not a bad guy but it really pisses me off. Worse is they both call themselves hipsters, possibly ironically but idts...and his spotify playlists are called hipstergasm and just stupid shit like "nothing but the beat". Worse now he's got his new bf every-time they hang they instagram photos..like 3-4 of them in one time.

sorry i needed to rant,.
