Snoop Dogg on Teen Son's Pot Use: 'He's Learning From The Master'

The family that smokes together stays together? So it would seem in the house of Snoop Dogg, where the hip-hop legend not only tokes with his eldest son Corde (nicknamed Spank), he’s helping the 18-year-old launch a career as Spanky Danky, whose songs have such titles as "Rollin, Rollin, Rollin … Stoned," "California Gs" and "Commemoration of Vaporization."

"What better way to [learn] than from the master?," Snoop tells The Hollywood Reporter in a new cover story. He’s referring specifically to photos posted on Twitter showing son lighting father’s 2-foot-bong. Before Spank pressed send, Snoop didn’t flinch.

“My kids can do whatever the hell they want," he explains of his parenting philosophy. "For me to say otherwise would be hypocritical. A lot of motherfuckers don't have a relationship with their kids, and that's when they get on drugs and have suicidal thoughts and drive drunk. Me and my son is mellow. I'm his father, so I wanna show him the proper way because he looks up to me.”

Like Bob Marley and Willie Nelson, Snoop is a stoner symbol who has long espoused marijuana's positive uses as they pertain to health, creativity and recreation, even on the heels of being busted -- eight times and counting, most recently in Norway in June (he's been banned from entering the country for two years) and, before that, in Sierra Blanca, Texas, the same spot where Fiona Apple was arrested for hashish possession Sept. 19.

His new project Reincarnated, a film and album due out in 2013, the hip hop legend travels to the plant's adopted homeland and documents his life-changing experience out of which he emerged Snoop Lion. For the record, Snoop, a California resident, is a proud holder of what he calls "a platinum medical marijuana card," though to be sure, most of his green is gifted. Still, he hopes to see the drug fully -- and federally -- legalized in his lifetime.

What would America look like then? “There would be less high-speed chases, less robberies, less crime,” he says. “Go to Amsterdam or the Netherlands where it is legal and you see that the crime rate is nonexistent, the murder rate is probably under 10 percent, people learn to get along! There are people riding on bicycles being happy and it's because of the environment that's provided by the legalization of marijuana.”

Naturally, it felt proper for this reporter to remind the Doggfather that Amsterdam recently enacted a law prohibiting ease of access to tourists looking to smoke in the city’s coffeeshops. Says Snoop as only Snoop can: “That shit don't apply to me.”

Where the matter gets more complicated, however, is back home. Although more than 20 states have enacted laws permitting or decriminalizing the use of marijuana for medical reasons, President Obama has gotten plenty of heat from the so-called stoner contingent over his seesawing policies as they pertain to the federal statute (where marijuana, alongside heroin, is still classified as a Schedule I drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970 for having "no accepted medical use"). Further frustrating some supporters, while Obama hasn’t been able to publicly make a stand for pot’s legal use, medicinal or otherwise, the president seemed to have no trouble enlisting stoner icons Harold and Kumar to star in an ad to promote his campaign.

How does Snoop see it? “What the f--k can he do?,” says the rapper who has declared his support for Obama many times in interviews and his own YouTube clips. Snoop continues: “At least the shit's been legalized in more states than when Bush was in office, but nobody’s paying attention to that. When Bush was president, I had to fight 15 weed cases at the same time all over the world … [Obama] loosened up screws in certain areas and opened up some eyes, but because he's a black man, his shit is gonna be microscoped and it'll be what he didn't do as opposed to what he did do.”

Does that mean there’s hope for POTUS second term? “It’s only been four years,” Snoop acknowledges, adding that history does tend to repeat itself. “Just like alcohol and prohibition, it’s a business,” he says. “Alcohol was legalized so it could be taxed. And alcohol and tobacco kill. If you legalize marijuana, it'll save lives and will put more money in the financial side, so why not?”

To be sure, if the two iconic figures ever come face-to-face, there’s bound to be some interesting conversation. “I ain't met the president yet,” says Snoop, “but when we finally lock palms -- you know, give him the old soul shake, that bare vibe on the black man's side -- that'll be exciting."

I can see his logic, but I wouldn't want my kids to be stoners.

Plus, it just smells foul.

iawtc, I feel like it makes people so unambitious
magic_monk 27th-Sep-2012 06:07 pm (UTC)
Idk I've always been a very functional stoner. I got good grades, found a good job. Same with a lot of my other friends. Some people just handle their high differently but yes...there are plenty of other lazy stoners haha.
watchsnowfall 27th-Sep-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
See, I disagree. My brother-in-law smokes, he's got three degrees, works at a big law firm, etc. One the other hand, my brother smoked waaay too much last year and was put on academic probation at college.

I think if you're not inspired / don't have good work ethic then smoking a lot might aggravate that, but I'd argue something like alcohol or video games could do that too. The crowd you run with matters just as much.
x_neverenough 27th-Sep-2012 06:44 pm (UTC)
if anything it's made me more productive tbh
expromqueen 27th-Sep-2012 06:46 pm (UTC)
lazy ppl become lazy stoners
missmonkeydust 27th-Sep-2012 06:53 pm (UTC)
I think it exaggerates your personality tbh. Lots of my family smoke it and it makes them even more feckless, childish etc. then they already are.

Apart from the smell making me vomit, the other big reason I'll never smoke it is because I can get extremely depressed (and lazy) at times and it'd probably make me worse.
goldengal1193 27th-Sep-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
Agreed.
jeffreyuno_1 27th-Sep-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
I was thinking that too, that house must smell real nice...all his kids getting high on top of him and his entourage.
eclatez 27th-Sep-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
Because the normal ones are the ones you don't know are stoners.

if you can keep your shit together I don't see why not. I personally get lazy as fuck so I'm about to take a break once my supply runs out.

Is it true that marijuana can calm back pain? because I have a pretty strong one these days and on Sunday I tried it for the second time. I didn't get high but my back was in a perfect state and allowed me to dance all night. I never dance all night, just a few hours. I was amazed. So idk. Maybe I just got lucky, maybe it really calms pains lmao.
miriamele 27th-Sep-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
I find that it helps with pain. I especially love to smoke when I'm surfin' that crimson wave - it really alleviates a lot of my cramping, lower back pain, headaches, etc. PLUS it's relaxing. IDK, I think it has a lot of medicinal qualities.
stoodon_theedge 27th-Sep-2012 06:11 pm (UTC)
Me too, I get horrible cramps and nausea and nothing helps but smoking. It's either that or just being stuck in bed/completely useless for a week.
esoteriq 27th-Sep-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
Seconding this. I very, very rarely use marijuana, when I do it's for menstrual pain, and chronic insomnia.
ascot_gavotte 27th-Sep-2012 07:00 pm (UTC)
for me, weed dulls cramping but not as effective as midol. but i don't live in a dispensary state so i don't have any options for strains.
mandramoddle 27th-Sep-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)
Oh definitely. That's why people who suffer from glaucoma and other painful diseases use it.
wingslapped 27th-Sep-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
IDK it doesn't work on fibromyalgia pain, which is not inflammation. At least it did make me very happy and giggly.
treegrowth 27th-Sep-2012 06:15 pm (UTC)
i can't speak for it helping back pain (though i believe it), but for what it's worth, i have a debilitating chronic stomach illness and medical mj has helped me SIGNIFICANTLY. i am officially off my pharmaceutical pain meds, sleep aid meds, and anti nausea meds (all of which had absolutely horrible side effects and i was dependent on them all for YEARS) all thanks to medical mj. i never tried mj until i got really sick, one of my nurses actually suggested it, but it has vastly improved my quality of life the past year and a half.
natvach 27th-Sep-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
It absolutely does. I had the worst headache last night and it was gone in 2 seconds after I lit up.
zigzagzap 27th-Sep-2012 06:24 pm (UTC)
Yup it really helped me before my back surgery and it didn't make me sick like vicodin.
expromqueen 27th-Sep-2012 06:48 pm (UTC)
i use it for cramps/back aches. it doesn't seem to "numb" the pain the way a painkiller does but instead it takes your mind's focus off the pain
breadprincess 27th-Sep-2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
I have endometriosis and I used mj for pain management for years, it was one of the only things that made it bearable, especially indica or indica blends and edibles.
nthmfn 27th-Sep-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
it's a mild muscle relaxer so yes
mortoeroe 29th-Sep-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
not sure if you'd be able to do it, but i have friends who infuse oils with some pot or make a salve & it makes w/e area you rub it on stoned? idk how else to describe the feeling. it just helps a lot with sore muscles or strain.
magic_monk 27th-Sep-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
I mean if its just marijuana.. My parents are also incredibly cool with this stuff. When I moved home from college they knew I smoked all the time. I've always been quite open with them which has actually helped them trust me more. I don't do anything else. I was still discreet about it and wasn't trying to like hang out with the fam blazed as hell haha. We actually all smoked on Christmas Eve last year and watched Always Sunny... and it was my Mom's idea.
ani_di_franco 27th-Sep-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
I have a similar family situation. My parents don't smoke, but they use to back in the day. It is openly know that my sister and I both smoke & it's no big deal. My mom even wanted to get high on her 50th birthday just for fun.
magic_monk 27th-Sep-2012 06:09 pm (UTC)
Right? They've been very open with me and their past experiences which makes it really easy to talk to them about things. I feel very lucky bc so many of my other friends are scared to death of their parents finding out.
stoodon_theedge 27th-Sep-2012 06:13 pm (UTC)
This is my situation as well. My parents were ( still are huge hippies tbh) and don't smoke regularly anymore, but they're cool with me doing it and join me for special occasions. I've always had an extremely open relationship with them.
expromqueen 27th-Sep-2012 06:50 pm (UTC)
this is me and my parent, too. my dad and his girlf are pretty republican but they know i smoke/have smoked in the past. they make jokes every once in a while about it (like one time they visited south padre island and brought me back a fancy ash tray w/ marijuana leaves on it hehe), but they've never tried to have an actual conversation about it. which is fine by me hahaha
strwbrri_shrtck 27th-Sep-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
Your family sounds really chill.
goldengal1193 27th-Sep-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
I mean, what else can you say?

i honestly see no issues here.
ohsofierce_x3 27th-Sep-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
Snoop Dog/Lion/Pachyderm is not fit to smoke the dirt underneath the shoes of Bob Marley.

But killer picture though.

I'm not really sure what you mean? Do you mean the actual post is all underlined and bolded? I checked it in IE, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox and it's not for me.
