Rupert Graves wants to save the Tree House.

Residents split over treehouse that council built without permission

A treehouse erected by council bosses who forgot to obtain planning permission from themselves has started a “war” between residents of a north London square.

Islington council commissioned the structure, which cost nearly £36,000, six months ago, but it has been overshadowed by a row that has polarised the community.

Families, including that of Room With A View actor Rupert Graves, who want the play facilities for their children are fighting residents who complain about noise and being overlooked from the structure.

Now the treehouse in Arundel Square in Barnsbury, which consists of three wooden platforms built around the trunk of a London plane tree, has been vandalised amid rumours of sabotage.

Bolts holding up a climbing net were removed on Friday, rendering the structure virtually unusable.

The conflict began when a resident of a new block of flats at the square complained about the treehouse.

It then emerged that the council’s leisure department had failed to apply for planning permission. Officials have since applied for retrospective permission but may have to tear it down if consent is not granted.

A petition to save it has already gained more than 330 signatures.

Resident Kira Phillips, a documentary film-maker, said: “It’s a war between the local families, who make use of the park, and the yuppie residents of the new flats who want a view of nature minus children. It’s the dark side of gentrification.”

Graves, 49, a married father of five, said: “To remove it because of a few people’s unfounded worries would be a criminal waste of money and resources, and a terrible capitulation on behalf of the council.”

Another resident, Jo Morris, said: “I don’t really understand how somebody can be so miserable about a piece of children’s play equipment.”

But resident Olivia Cole said in her complaint to the council: “I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. My main concern is that I am now overlooked by users of this structure.

"I spent the extra money on my apartment in order to secure one that was a considerable distance away from the residences opposite to avoid being looked into. Imagine my shock when I saw this structure going up.”

There is no suggestion Ms Cole was involved in the alleged sabotage.

Now I'm imagining Rupert Graves chaining himself to a tree house.

There is no suggestion Ms Cole was involved in the alleged sabotage. lol, well there wasn't, anyway. Terrible, reporter. Terrible.

What's with the protesting tree houses?

First JK Rowling, now him.
sherlockholmes 27th-Sep-2012 02:21 pm (UTC)
He's not protesting against it -- he wants people to not take it down.
xdecadentx 27th-Sep-2012 02:23 pm (UTC)
I didn't mean people as in him, I meant the people protesting against him.
margaeryt 27th-Sep-2012 02:29 pm (UTC)

sadisticsidhe 27th-Sep-2012 02:32 pm (UTC)
I have to say it. Those are some ugly tree houses.

sherlockholmes 27th-Sep-2012 02:48 pm (UTC)
They should be protesting in favour of an upgrade-to-ewok-village.
wingslapped 27th-Sep-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
The kids would end up protesting because the adults keep playing in the ewok village all the time.
sadisticsidhe 27th-Sep-2012 03:04 pm (UTC)
That would be amazing on a lot of levels and a fulfillment of a childhood fantasy. I'd move to Islington.
lachica2000 27th-Sep-2012 03:05 pm (UTC)
Ok, that is hideous but I don't know what the residents of the flats are bitching about. Anyone in the park could look in and I doubt the kids really give enough of a shit to do so that often anyway.
andisprohi 27th-Sep-2012 03:23 pm (UTC)
That would annoy me if it went up in front of my apartment. It's ugly and it'll attract screaming kids; and you know they'll scream because their parents act like "THEY'RE KIDS, THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO SCREAM! SCREAM IN OUR BACKYARD ? BUILD OUR OWN TREEHOUSE ? OMG, NO WAY" Yeah, I don't like other people's kids

I miss Sherlock. :(
meredydd 27th-Sep-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
Rupert Graves... *sigh* I can't even be jealous of his wife because he's just so flawless, why begrudge her the happy?

I can't think of one movie he's been in that's he hasn't been great in. The movie may suck but he's always great (and even then, I really can't think of a movie of his that's bad).
theflyingbeet 27th-Sep-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
aging like wine,flawless
