Hugh Grant comes @Out4Marriage and says ‘love is the same for everyone’

Hugh Grant, star of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, About a Boy and the Bridget Jones films, has recorded a video in support of the Out4Marriage campaign to make same-sex marriage legal in the UK.

Grant follows fellow campaigners Sir Richard BransonThe Saturdays and Paloma Faith, saying that although he was “not a massive believer in marriage”, he thought “everyone should have the same rights. If you want to get married, whether you’re gay, straight, transgender [or] whatever, you should definitely be allowed to do that.”

In his short Out4Marriage video, Grant said: “Hello I’m Hugh Grant. I’m not a massive believer in marriage; I think my own biography is testament to that but I do think that love is the same for everyone. And I do think that everyone should have the same rights. If you want to get married, whether you’re gay, straight, transgender [or] whatever, you should definitely be allowed to do that”.

Welcoming the video, Joseph Musgrave, for the Out4Marriage campaign, said: “There has been a tendency amongst some media commentators to subject the equal marriage debate to a mere political calculation.

“Although it’s great to have such a well known celebrity support us, Hugh’s key contribution is to emphasise the human element – this is all about the recognition of love and freeing people to decide how they, and not the state, choose to act on that.”

The Out4Marriage campaign is one of the most prominent groups campaigning for equal religious and civil marriage.

It has attracted support from a wide spectrum of public and private figures including Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson, the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, the Home Secretary Theresa May, Labour power couple Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls, the Bishop of Buckingham Alan Wilson, The Saturdays and singer Paloma Faith.

The campaign will release an Out4Marriage video by a major British star each week until the end of October.

We have civil partnerships, not marriage.

But the current government has said that they'll upgrade it to marriage at some point in the future; campaigns like this are just to chivvy them along, and a big middle finger to uppity religious/right-wing people.

I think we have civil unions, but this would be the next level where gay people could have religious weddings and call it marriage legally and stuff.

Scotland will have it sooner than the rest of the UK. We're badass like that.
