Nicki Minaj talks ‘American Idol’, feud rumors & more on ‘The View’

Some love to hate her. Some hate to love her.

In just a few short years, Nicki Minaj has gone from an underground Lil Kim-influenced emcee to full-fledged superstar in her own right.  Whether it’s music, movies (Ice Age 4) or perfume, the Young Money vixen is poised to take over the entertainment business with her army of Barbs behind her.

Earlier today, Miss Minaj made what is assumed to be the first of many visits to ABC’s The View. The rapper–dressed in black and blue-striped pants, red blazer and matching hat–joined guest host Olympian Gabby Douglas to promote her new fragrance Pink Friday and upcoming gig on American Idol.  Behind the couch sat a display of all of Nicki’s most “interesting” fashion choices. “I’m notorious for picking everything out,” she said. “I like to be in control of everything. In my opinion, it’s like a kind of disorder I have [laughs]. I’m more comfortable being cooky. I’m less comfortable showing skin.”

Naturally, the conversation led to her fiercely dedicated army of Barbs, some of who were in The View audience. While many have blasted her sometimes provocative lyrics and choice of words, it should also be noted that the 28-year old has nothing but good intentions when it comes to those who look up to her. “Five- and six-year-olds have to be parented by their parents. But, I love children. I love education and I love ambition. And I always tell my fans that,” she assures. “I’m really potty-mouthed and all that crazy stuff, but I’m realistic in telling them, ‘Hey, I worked hard for what I have and if you want to be successful, you have to work hard.’ I don’t like when girls depend on men.”

Whoopi Goldberg, who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, made it a point for Nicki to tell viewers how important being an individual is. Who better to do it than the VERY unique Nicki? “I like my Barbz to have individuality. And even if you’re not my Barb, I like you to feel like it doesn’t have to be the in thing; it doesn’t have to be cool.  And even if it’s something I do, you don’t have to love it…And love yourselves, Barbs.”

Perhaps one of the biggest milestones in Nicki’s career so far is a judging stint on American Idol (her rumored paycheck is $12 million). She joins fellow rookie judges Keith Urban and Mariah Carey, the latter whom she collaborated with on ‘Up Out My Face’ as well as Randy Jackson.  Though she kept mum on details of the new season, she notes that all of the judges are getting along great contrary to fueding rumors.  And let’s not forget about her Pink Friday fragrance set to debut in stores soon: “As a little girl growing up in Southside Jamaica Queens, if anyone would’ve told me I’d have my own perfume one day, and be able to inspire young black girls everywhere; to go into Macy or Nordstroms and see their face staring back at them- I wouldn’t believe them.”

While everyone may not be a fan, you have to respect the grind of a Vixen conquering every facet of the industry in 2012 and beyond.

It's "kooky" not "cooky". That's an awesome word and I can't believe it was misspelled.

Also that last line is funny. The author's pretty much saying, "Yeah, she's terrible but she's really successful so we have to give her some ink."

I can only hope more young peoples (I am young lols) realize the importance of hard work.

I can't believe i used to like her.

Her being on American Idol seems like such a weird career choice to me. IDGI.
morgan90 24th-Sep-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
She wants to be a pop/top 40 artist. Also, I'm guessing a massive paycheque couldn't hurt either.
unclecraig 24th-Sep-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Her wanting to be a top 40 artist is why this makes no sense to me.

This seems like a career move after you've already had your moment as one the top popstars...or if that moment is never gonna come for you.

i honestly think she's in it for the business, not the show.

3, 4 years grinding it out on the mixtape/cable access circuit

3 years doing stadium tours

some small endorsement deals like pepsi

american idol for a season or 2 (most likely only 1)

then no need to worry if her next album tanks

she's still got enough money in the bank to live off her investments and/or try her hand at acting, which is what she's really wanted to do all along.

i'm more worried for safaree, to be honest. think of safaree!!!
ponpiri 24th-Sep-2012 10:11 pm (UTC)
She wants the check.
fasdsr2 24th-Sep-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
well, that's been changing over the past couple of years
oh7 24th-Sep-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
I think her goal for mainstream status has been pretty apparent since at least 2009 and I've noticed that she throws a different attitude when she's dealing with Black media.

...this M. Bison looking bitch.
honey_fuggle 24th-Sep-2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
i loved nicki before all her pop success. she could really rap - she still can, but she wants to release all this bubblegum pop mess and it's a shame.
music_lover56 24th-Sep-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
I hate her speaking voice and this was such an awkward interview :/
jess_sayin 24th-Sep-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
ugh this bitch. so try hard.
andres01234 24th-Sep-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
I hope Americal idol has huge ratings to show Simon what a cunt he is
jeterluva 24th-Sep-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
How the hell did Nicki get 12 million if Britney got like 15 and Mariah got 18? Something is wrong there.
jennkiki 24th-Sep-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
I am not even remotely interested on watching her on American Idol.
saintssin 24th-Sep-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
But there's nothing unique about Nicki. She looks like every other Arkham patient out there.
ponpiri 24th-Sep-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)
Whatever haters. She was cute on The View today, although that last statement from Whoopi was a wtf moment lol
