Lynyrd Skynyrd backtrack...They won’t abandon the Confederate flag.

Recently, Lynyrd Skynyrd told CNN that it has stopped associating itself with the Confederate flag because “it became such an issue about race.” The flag had been hijacked by the KKK and other hate groups you see. However, after receiving lots of media attention and fan backlash, Skynyrd is sticking with the flag after all.

Guitarist Gary Rossington released the following statement on the band’s Facebook page:

I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past and present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.

We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans.

I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

In other words, the next time you see a Confederate flag at a Lynyrd Skynyrd show and you are a little offended, don’t see it as reference to slavery–see it as a reference to all the good stuff that the antebellum South was known for.

"We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights."

This revisionist history of ignoring of how their version of "The South" was built on the labor of POC. Oh...

Drives me absolutely insane. I mean yes, they are correct...it was a states right issue....it was their States rights to own slaves. They were in fear of losing it. In fact almost every Confederate State in their new constitution notes they are leaving solely to protect the institution of Slavery. There is no good history or heritage to the Southern states seceding. There was no higher cause. Repainting it later to ease your own guilt does not erase the truth of history.

This pleases me that there are historians in this world to correct such errors...

It boggles my mind. I live in the south, and I am constantly shocked at the sheer amount of otherwise intelligent people who flip the fuck out on me and give me the whole, "ZOMG THE CIVIL WAR HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH SLAVERY IT WAS ONLY ABOUT STATES' RIGHT SDJFLKAJSDFL;KAJSDF."
callme_morbid 24th-Sep-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)
ikr. reminds me of the people who detract from the issue of slavery and call it the "war of northern aggression." i live in VA, so i've heard that several times lol.

kind of figured this would happen considering they didn't rly grasp the concept of the flag being racist and just assumed racist organizations "hijacked" it

I live in Canada and I see people with Ontario license plates and confederate flag stickers/emblems. I don't even understand it.

You can't have Southern pride, you aren't even American.
kalishaka 24th-Sep-2012 08:03 pm (UTC)
I don't even know what to do with that information. Why?
henryevil 24th-Sep-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)

same in BC--I'm told that it's considered redneck/rural pride

I've yet to meet someone who knows what the symbol actually means so I'm happy to educate them--of course, I'm a humourless PC bitch

This isn't even a situation like symbols changing, hasn't the ~Dixie~ flag always been a sign of racism because it's the flag of the side that was cool with slavery?
brosling 24th-Sep-2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
my favorite is when self-proclaimed patriots show off the confederate flag proudly lmao like um u do realize that the south were essentially traitors to america
hammersxstrings 24th-Sep-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)

patentpending 24th-Sep-2012 08:08 pm (UTC)
Lol, yes, the "it wasn't all about slavery" excuse never fails to make me laugh, as if that issue was no big deal and just happened to be one of the ~many wonderful things they aligned themselves with.

I don't know if I'm even in the mood for this post. I've been super tired lately.

But I'll just say, I hate when mother fuckers say things like this. "It represents the south!"...Shut the hell up. Are you American? Okay then, what's wrong with using the American flag? Most of you guys claim to be super patriotic anyway.
praiseheathus 24th-Sep-2012 07:55 pm (UTC)
I can't believe people still use the crap excuse that it's about "states' rights" not slavery.
