New Les Mis Movie Poster!

Universal Pictures has released the new poster for Les Misérables, opening on Christmas Day. Directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), the adaptation of the musical stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

I showed my mom the featurette and when it finished, she said "Dad can't come with us because he'll be making fun of my crying"

I'm going to fall apart in this movie
lfitzb 24th-Sep-2012 06:17 pm (UTC)
Love your mom. she knows exactly how I feel.
cuteej4 24th-Sep-2012 05:02 pm (UTC)
Same reason why the play has English speaking actors.

sadisticsidhe 24th-Sep-2012 05:09 pm (UTC)
Because it's in English...?
x_girl_wonder_x 24th-Sep-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
That's always been bugged me- the fact that it's a French setting, yet even in the American Broadway version- the actors put on a British accent. Le sigh.
steph313 24th-Sep-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
I read somewhere once that many Americans are subconsciously convinced they get the "European" experience in films as long as the actor has an understandable accent--which given the shared language, British accents tend to be preferable. So, you can basically set the film anywhere in Europe, cast a British actors, and the ~*foreign experience*~ will be achieved.
butterflysnf 24th-Sep-2012 06:44 pm (UTC)
I wonder if it is because if the french people will learn English they imagine it makes sense that they will emulate their neighbors accent, and after that I can not come up with anything.
hrhobo 24th-Sep-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
if les mis is performed in france... do they change the dialogue/lyrics to french?

legit question lol.
nemo_de_la_meer 24th-Sep-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
For some reason, I prefer Les Mis with any accent except English. I have bad memories of how awful the Broadway cast was and how everyone was trying to sound like the London cast and failing all over the place.

LOVE IT

so_chic_doll 24th-Sep-2012 05:03 pm (UTC)
lol I'm just anticipating the butchering of the musical's name when people go to buy tickets.

"2 for less miser-ables"
cuteej4 24th-Sep-2012 05:06 pm (UTC)
I already get it at the library when kids ask for the book.

I just repeat their request the right way it's said
so_chic_doll 24th-Sep-2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
I remember learning to say it by thinking "lame as a rob"
sadisticsidhe 24th-Sep-2012 05:11 pm (UTC)
I remember a couple Les Miz posts back someone referred to it as 'The Miserable.'

I was like 'Well, yes but no. No.'
stephaniebrown 24th-Sep-2012 05:26 pm (UTC)
lol yup. telling my granddad about it and hearing him say in this (awful vid but is basically exactly how he sounds) voice was painful tbh.
ghost_busting 24th-Sep-2012 05:45 pm (UTC)
I work at a cinema box office and I will be correcting pronunciations all day long. My fave part of the job.
evenstarnikki 24th-Sep-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
girl, that`s how the minister pronounced it in my grandfather`s eulogy. :-P

my grandparents loved les mis and saw it numerous times together, which is why my grandma brought it up in her letter. she couldn`t read it herself, so the minister did for her. <3 i don`t think english was his first language though, or maybe he hadn`t been in canada long, cuz he butchered some pronunciations and cultural references lol. you don`t have to speak french or be a theatre geek to know about les mis, but if you`re gonna pronounce everything phonetically, how`d you get "moose caw-caw" from "Muskoka"? it was funny lol.
digipacopr 24th-Sep-2012 05:04 pm (UTC)
On My Own better slay or i will forever renounce this movie
so_chic_doll 24th-Sep-2012 05:05 pm (UTC)
It will.

x_girl_wonder_x 24th-Sep-2012 05:20 pm (UTC)
No Lea Salonga, but she is nonetheless amazing.
I was so happy when she was picked to play Eponine in the film (thank god it wasn't Taylor Swift)!

winonaforever 24th-Sep-2012 05:18 pm (UTC)
I didn't like On My Own in the featurette, tbh. I'm a bit worried.
grotesque_xxx 24th-Sep-2012 05:05 pm (UTC)
