'The Great Gatsby' set for May 10, 2013

Warner Bros. has found a new release date for Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby."

After pushing the film from this Christmas holiday, Warner Bros. will now open its 1920s-era epic on May 10, 2013, the start of the summer moviegoing season. (International rollout will begin the following week.)

The studio initially pushed back the release so Luhrmann could have more time to finish the special effects on the 3-D film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. Also, the extra months will give Luhrmann time to put together a planned all-star soundtrack, a la his work on 2001's "Moulin Rouge," which featured high-profile tracks from artists like Christina Aguilera, Pink, Madonna and David Bowie.

(Luhrmann's interest in pairing contemporary recording artists with his period work is clear in the trailer, which features Jay-Z and Jack White.)

The date change should help fill in Warner Bros.' summer schedule, which also includes "The Hangover: Part III" (May 24), "Man of Steel" (June 14), "Pacific Rim" (July 12) and an untitled "300" sequel (Aug. 2).

Less clear are Warner Bros.' Oscar prospects for the Roaring '20s story that also stars Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher. Common practice has most films geared toward year-end awards bowing in the fall season.

Yet Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge" opened in June 2001 and was nominated for eight Oscars and won two.

awww I thought this would have made a great xmas film :(
teamdowney 23rd-Sep-2012 09:59 pm (UTC)
Same. I think they made a huge mistake.
wonderwomanhero 23rd-Sep-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
Lots of book-based movies do well over the Holiday season (Just look at Little Women) but this?....it's doomed now that they changed it.
fluorescentx 23rd-Sep-2012 10:08 pm (UTC)
same, but maybe they were aware that les mis and the hobbit were coming out so close together and wanted to set it apart? they had all the big superhero summer blockbusters this year, so there is more likely going to be a larger audience in summer and potentially less competition if Luhrmann is gunning for Oscar nods and attention.
cleanburritos 23rd-Sep-2012 10:11 pm (UTC)
Leo should also focus any Oscar prospects on a supporting nod for Django Unchained.
missyyyyyy 23rd-Sep-2012 10:27 pm (UTC)
Me too! I wanted to see this and D'jango Unchained on Christmas Day, it sounded like the perfect way to avoid family
ritaamber 23rd-Sep-2012 09:57 pm (UTC)
A nice way of saying it had zero chance at award season.
ritaamber 23rd-Sep-2012 09:58 pm (UTC)
but i still rock the moulin rouge soundtrack so maybe we will luck out

this is shaping up to be a bigger disaster than australia
wonderwomanhero 23rd-Sep-2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
What was that film about anyway? I swear all I remember is Nicole Kidman riding horseback
kindafunnysad 23rd-Sep-2012 10:06 pm (UTC)
i only remember that little kid being fucking annoying and hugh jackman shooting a kangaroo and that watching it felt longer than watching apocalypse now redux, titanic and the three lord of the rings in a row.
winter_lace 23rd-Sep-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
It was about the struggle on the land yo!

I actually don't remember much except Jack Thompson's characters horse breaking it's leg and fucking traumatizing me for life. (Traumatizing because when I was around eight my own horse broke it's leg and had to get put down and is still one of the most horrifying memories of my entire life.)
joaniemaloney 23rd-Sep-2012 10:29 pm (UTC)
an australian playing an australian in a film set in australia called 'australia.'

this is all I recall from hugh jackman.

Australia. And botox.
ditiswritten 24th-Sep-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
Nicole Kidman's dead husband owned cattle in Australia, so she hires Hugh Jackman to drive them across the outback to wherever they need to be. Oh and then the Japanese bomb Darwin because it's WWII and there's an Aborigine kid who goes on his walkabout at the end.

lololol yes

i feel like this is taking ages to come out. not looking forward to what baz did to my favorite book but i'm sure the soundtrack will be nice.
wonderwomanhero 23rd-Sep-2012 10:01 pm (UTC)
Who is playing Myrtle?

isla fisher
goldenhera 23rd-Sep-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
Really? That sounds awful. I honestly don't know who I would pick to play her but. Isla Fisher? I don't see it.
door 23rd-Sep-2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
Hmm, suspicious.
sandstorm 23rd-Sep-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
Is there actually some part in the novel that would warrant 3D?
powerbottom 23rd-Sep-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
The confetti during the parties, tbh.
demikkusuu 23rd-Sep-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
so you can feel the angst of f scott fitzgerald's generation punching you in the face

cruel_fortuna 23rd-Sep-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
The only thing that comes to mind is the bit with the lighthouse.
cleanburritos 23rd-Sep-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
I think Baz is going to make the party scenes quite outrageous.
ponpiri 23rd-Sep-2012 10:19 pm (UTC)
the scenery. The 3D trailer was beautiful
actxappalledx 23rd-Sep-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
it isn't all about things flying at you, tho. 3d adds depth to the visuals. i bet the movie is going to be stunning
chimbleysweep 23rd-Sep-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
Green light.
goldenhera 23rd-Sep-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
Have you read the book recently? I was a bit skeptical of Baz's style before I re-read the book. His over-the-topness really would lend itself to so much of the story.
hangthemj 24th-Sep-2012 12:46 am (UTC)
dude don't you remember the part where gatsby threw knives at the reader's face
arcadiaego 24th-Sep-2012 12:57 am (UTC)
I hear it's really supposed to be about depth in the picture rather than things flying out of it but let's be honest that's just not as funny to think about.
snuffyqui45 23rd-Sep-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
LOL. I guess they sensed that weren't gonna be up for many Oscars.
cruel_fortuna 23rd-Sep-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
Damn shame.
It would have done better in the Winter season.

I won't be seeing it in May cause I'll be busy watching Iron Man 3 for the kajillionth time that week.
_dennis_csi_ 23rd-Sep-2012 10:08 pm (UTC)
lol after seeing may 10, iron man 3 was the first thing came to my mind
cruel_fortuna 23rd-Sep-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
RDJ > Leo therein IM3 was obvs. the first thing that came to mind.
In fact, when I think of May I should be thinking of college graduation & finding a real job but nope - first thing that comes to mind is Marvel movies.
pacificway 23rd-Sep-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
idc I am HERE for this.

Can't wait to see this on the big screen.
trixx_r4_kidz 23rd-Sep-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
same, I'm willing to wait because I totally believe in the 3D element (after seeing Hugo) and have faith in his vision. I think it's going to flop now though.
pacificway 23rd-Sep-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
Ah Carlton <3 ia it will likely flop. tbh I have not seen anything in 3D but i HAVE to see the costumes and jewels on the big screen!
ponpiri 23rd-Sep-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
same and the 3D will be amazing.
powerbottom 23rd-Sep-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
I loved the trailer.
