Josh Hutcherson: 'Hunger Games' star is all right

Youth Impact Report 2012: Bigscreen Kids

Of the three young actors headlining the acclaimed teen phenomenon "The Hunger Games," Josh Hutcherson boasts the most industry experience. Acting since he was 11, Hutcherson has appeared in more than 20 films. But none of those projects -- including Oscar-nominated drama "The Kids Are All Right" and the action-packed "Journey to the Center of the Earth" pics -- prepared him for the cultural impact of starring opposite Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games."

"It was a bit of a challenge to physically embody the role," he says of playing Peeta Mellark. "But my biggest mission was to do the best I could in the movie. I hoped by doing so fans would be OK with it."

Given the critical and commercial success of the first film, it's safe to say Hutcherson's nuanced portrayal of Peeta won over skeptical book fans who didn't think he looked the part. In fact, before "Hunger Games" premiered, Hutcherson was told to prepare for a possibly overwhelming amount of fan attention.

So far, however, Hutcherson says passionate Peeta 'n' Katniss fans haven't unduly crimped his day-to-day life. "Honestly, it hasn't been absolutely crazy like people told me it would be. It's nice that I've been able to maintain a private life," he says.

With three more "Hunger Games" films to go, Hutcherson plans to escape the Peeta mold by appearing in independent films. Last year, he starred and produced high-school horror comedy "Detention."

"I don't ever want to be seen as just one role. That's why I haven't done TV. It can be amazing, but you can definitely be typecast as that one role," he says.

Hutcherson, who cites such versatile thesp as Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling as his industry role models, hopes to continue producing and to begin directing as well.

"I'm dying to get into more behind-the-scenes work. I want to produce and direct and create whatever I want some day."

Impact: Starred in "Journey 2," then massive teen hit, "The Hunger Games."
Next: Three more "Games" pics, a "Red Dawn" remake, and the animated adventure "Epic."
Causes: Active in Straight But Not Narrow (SBNN), the gay-straight alliance for youth, founded by actor friend Avan Jogia.

kindafunnysad 23rd-Sep-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
they really have the worst colorists for these movies. even jlaw's hair looked unrealistic and it's not THAT hard to make a blonde look like a natural brunette.
our_scars 23rd-Sep-2012 01:43 am (UTC)
yeah... they should have made the base an ashy blonde and add some highlights
gaga 22nd-Sep-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)

rubyboots 22nd-Sep-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry but every time I see him now or his role as Peeta is mentioned, I just think of him lying there, painted to look like a rock, and can't take anything about him seriously

thetrustoryofme 22nd-Sep-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
this part really annoyed me. "yeah people are running around killing others and i was just slashed. let me miraculously pull out my paint kit, paint my face and body, cover myself in moss and other things, and hide. that wont take long"
rubyboots 22nd-Sep-2012 11:47 pm (UTC)
ikr? it was bad enough in the book and I was like "...wait what? really?!" but it looked RIDICULOUS in the film, like laugh out loud funny
thetrustoryofme 22nd-Sep-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
this. i mean, so much of that was absurd, but that part was just like "COMEEEEEE ON!". that, the genetically engineered dogs/ex tributes, and the immediate healing medicines were just eye roll worthy.
kindafunnysad 23rd-Sep-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
seriously, it didn't make any sense. you might as well build yourself a cave, it'll take less time and will be safer
thetrustoryofme 23rd-Sep-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
or just cut to the chase and build a machine gun. i mean really. if we're being unrealistic as is, go big or go home people!

omg i don't understand how anyone who is even a remotely decent person could date someone who is anti-gay...
thetrustoryofme 23rd-Sep-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
he seems pretty decent and is a huge activist as far as gay rights go, so i was always shocked about him getting back together with his ex who definitely does not share those views.
derrobitch 23rd-Sep-2012 12:20 am (UTC)
that's what i mean, how can someone who fights for gay rights actually stand to date someone who is homophobic...
thetrustoryofme 23rd-Sep-2012 01:00 am (UTC)
yeahhhhhhhh, i feel like a lot of people want to know that answer. hopefully he'll wise up about it, though i think its their second attempt at a relationship, so he obviously didnt realize it fully the first time around.
mementox 23rd-Sep-2012 06:42 am (UTC)
I almost broke up with my bf when he said he was unsure about his views on legalizing gay marriage. Like we got in a huge fight and didn't talk for a week

We stayed together tho and now were married and he's 100% pro gay rights thank gawd
stylistic4u 23rd-Sep-2012 01:23 pm (UTC)
He isn't back with his ex though. They are just friends...and yeah I don't get it either. Plus she hangs out with the co founder of SBNN (Straight But Not Narrow) as well.
d00ditsemily 23rd-Sep-2012 04:44 am (UTC)
No she has disappeared of the face of the internet world and he hasn't been seen with her since he started filming aka she was a side piece
scarletfbl 23rd-Sep-2012 12:03 am (UTC)
Him and his wonky pinky are awesome and progressive, and therefore can get it.

I don't care how old you are. Let's get married.

Also, I think I'm finally slightly okay with this Red Dawn remake. Just slightly.
