"Awkward" Season Finale Recap: Jenna Questions Her Big Decision



I was honestly starting to doubt this day would ever come. Jenna (Ashley Rickards) finally chose between Matty (Beau Mirchoff) and Jake (Brett Davern) on the Sept. 20 season finale of Awkward — but because this is Jenna we’re talking about, her decision only made things more complicated. For everyone. So who did Jenna choose? Drumroll please…

Matty! Yes, much to the chagrin of Team Jake (including yours truly) Jenna left the blond boy wonder out in the cold. Fortunately for Jake, a super-desperate — and super-drunk — Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) was with open lips to heal his broken heart. Jenna was peeved at first, but she got over it pretty quickly. I guess she really is wishy washy in every aspect of her life.

In other awkward relationship news, Sadie (Molly Tarlov) got the shock of her life when she caught Ricky (Matthew Fahey) making out with Clark (Joseph Haro)! Oh, and speaking of Clark, it was also revealed that he was Jenna’s mysterious blog commenter all along! It was a night of crazy revelations fo sho.

Though Jenna appeared happy with Matty — she even turned down her parents’ offer for a free summer trip to Europe so she could be with him — her inner voice expressed a very different emotion: doubt!

I was so happy they revealed her decision at the very beginning of the episode so it wouldn't be dragged out but then the ending omg. If they drag this triangle out another season I'M DONE!

And can we talk about how horrible Ashley Rickards looked and acted at the after show?

JENNA NEEDS TO JUST BE HAPPY AND ACCEPT IT, GOD DAMN. SO WHAT IF MATTY DOESN'T LIKE DANCING. DANCE WITHOUT HIM. HE WAS FINE WITH HER GOING TO EUROPE, I'M SURE HE'LL BE OKAY IF SHE DANCES WITHOUT HIM.

eh... I don't know. i thought that too, but she seemed pretty friendly with Beau and Brett, I just think it was awkward seating. clearly Beau and Brett get along better, but i think she does get along with them.

What goes through Ashley's head when doing her hair/applying make up? Also, was it just me or did it seem like the cast members were super close (especially Jillian and Molly) but Ashley seemed like she wasn't apart of it?

Anyway, I'm happy Jenna and Matty wound up together. The finale was good.

I always think the same thing about her when I see her out of character. she always looks TERRIBLE! she's so pretty and on the show they take full advantage but irl it's like she's doing everything she can to make herself look super fake and gross. nagl, gurl.

very predictable. everything that happened I knew would. she would pick Matty. Tamara and Jake got together. Clark was the "mystery" blogger.

I did think they were going to have Jenna give her trip to Tamara and Jake give his to Matty though.

and I'm a bit disappointed that they build Matty up all season to be a great guy, but in the end they make him "that guy". the one that girls always give up everything for.

I guess it's my fault for wording it the way I did, but I in no way blame Matty, nor think he is the problem. I do think Matty is a great guy, and he was encouraging her to go to Europe. He now knows what he wants and he is in a good place. my comment was in regards to the writing and the speech they gave her mom to say. Her mom gave the speech that she did whatever Ben wanted and didn't make decisions for what she wanted, and then they apply almost the same situation to Matty and Jenna at the end of the episode, followed by regret from Jenna.

I really don't know why they couldn't just send her to Europe with Tamara and Val, have her come back, and their relationship be great.
why does all the drama have to be about a boy. I wish, for season 3 they would have made the only stable part of her life her relationship with Matty (and her friends) and maybe her drama could be her mom getting pregnant again. or something less cliche, but not built around boys.

I so agree with the last part. She's just so used to things going wrong that she's just desperately seeking for it to go wrong so now she's going to cling onto what her mother said and ruin it all for herself. I'm glad she's finally getting the blame for it because her secret relationship going wrong was also her fault, Matty stated what it was and she kept blowing it up and then he turned his act around and decided that he wanted to be with her (like the prom thing) and she blew it because she was expecting him to call it off the rooftops, yet everyone was saying how Matty was an ass when Jenna had too high expectations from the beginning.

I'm ok with Matty as Jake & Tamara is just PERFECT. I could've shipped him with her during season 1's finale had he been single.

Also, that after show was just OUT TO LUNCH. I wish the actors for Ming & Jenna's dad was there and I'm sad no one commended Nikki's tour de force performance this year. She SLAYED everyone

Also, I hate the "choose between your boyfriend and a trip to Europe" plot SO much, but at least Tamara, who actually wanted to go the whole time, got to do so.

I enjoyed this episode overall but I felt like her picking Matty happened way too quickly. It was like, oh here they are! Finally together, no big deal! But it happened offscreen! And at the very beginning of the episode when I saw that she and Matty were together, I just knew something was going to go wrong, because things never go smoothly on this show. Oh well. TEAM MATTY.

I'll miss seeing Beau on my TV screen every week.

Jake and Tamara are FLAWLESS though so I guess its ok.
