Scarlett Johansson Returning to Broadway in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'

Scarlett Johansson is slinking her way back to Broadway as Maggie the Cat.

"The Avengers" actress will star opposite Benjamin Walker ("Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter") in a new revival of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," in a role most commonly associated with Elizabeth Taylor.

But Johansson brings with her some formidable theater chops to the role of the sex-starved Maggie. Her previous foray onto Broadway, the 2010 revival of Arthur Miller's "A View From a Bridge," scored her a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Play.

Ben Brantley, the often irascible theater critic for the New York Times, raved about her performance in the kitchen-sink drama, writing, "Ms. Johansson melts into her character so thoroughly that her nimbus of celebrity disappears."

In contrast to that play, Williams' sultry melodrama will allow Johansson plenty of opportunities for glamor-pussing and sizzle. Her character, a desperately unhappy woman, flaunts her sexuality in an attempt to draw her repressed homosexual husband Brick (Walker) back to the marriage bed.

Rounding out the cast are Ciarán Hinds, who last appeared on Broadway in 2007 production of Conor McPherson's "The Seafarer, as the domineering Big Daddy; and Tony Award-winning actress Debra Monk as his long-suffering wife, Big Mama.

Tony Award winner director-choreographer Rob Ashford, will direct. He recently staged the revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" with Daniel Radcliffe.

Preview performances will begin Dec. 18 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Opening night is Jan. 17.

The play is produced by Stuart Thompson.

god, enough. this pains me knowing how many struggling actresses can probably play the shit out of maggie
minderbinder 20th-Sep-2012 11:07 pm (UTC)
Probably a lot, but with the way Broadway is struggling financially nowadays, Hollywood puts asses in seats.
tinkyfinky 20th-Sep-2012 11:20 pm (UTC)
yeah. it sucks and i'm not into it
hangthemj 20th-Sep-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)

mellarks 20th-Sep-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
I love Ben Walker sfm. I got to see "Bloody, Bloody, Andrew Jackson" before it closed and it was a blast.
minderbinder 20th-Sep-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
Still pressed that show got completely overlooked at the Tonys, especially Ben for Best Actor.
mellarks 20th-Sep-2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
Ben totally deserved a nomination, if nothing else from that show did. That and lighting. Doing that entire show with no intermission and showing that total change in character while wearing those jeans?

Bitter as fuq.
bardotlashes 20th-Sep-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, he was hot like fire as Andrew Jackson. If I go see this, it'll be for him.
loganx2 20th-Sep-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
Im just glad it's Ben Walker and not the rumored Jeremy Renner. Walker is so much better.
henryevil 20th-Sep-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
Yas goddess show them
bluemyself777 20th-Sep-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
I would still choose Paul Newman over any other Brick. he was amazing in everything he did.
notoriousreign 20th-Sep-2012 11:14 pm (UTC)
Paul Walker's cheeks and fucking EYES in that goddamn.
bluemyself777 20th-Sep-2012 11:22 pm (UTC)
yesss. only I think you meant Newman, but I'll let it slide. ;)
rosewood39 21st-Sep-2012 01:56 am (UTC)

prophecypro 20th-Sep-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
Love her
minderbinder 20th-Sep-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
Here for Ben Walker, tbh.
winniechili 20th-Sep-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
Are Tony Awards really a big deal? It seems like every big Hollywood actor gets one
mellarks 20th-Sep-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
It depends on the year, tbh. And if it's a musical vs. a play and how much longer the show will be running (to draw in more people to pay higher prices for tickets). There's a lot of politics~ and celebs do win a lot, though, but plenty of Broadway people have beaten bigger names.

I think they're still a big deal because they're part of the 'trifecta', but it's gone down a lot.
bellwetherr 20th-Sep-2012 11:18 pm (UTC)
They're an insanely big deal for Broadway actors.
bluemyself777 20th-Sep-2012 11:25 pm (UTC)
they are a big deal in the theatre community. I think a lot of theatre actors feel like Hollywood stars are stealing their roles, and there have been a lot of celebs in plays, which could explain the abundance of tonys they seem to be getting.

that being said, i saw A View from the Bridge and she was deserving of the tony.
sometimes_mbv 21st-Sep-2012 08:04 am (UTC)
maybe because they deserved it?
bellwetherr 20th-Sep-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
Wasn't Renner rumored for the lead?
sometimes_mbv 21st-Sep-2012 08:05 am (UTC)
yes, him and chris pine.
bellwetherr 21st-Sep-2012 12:26 pm (UTC)
God. I would have died to see Chris Pine on stage. Everyone has said his stage work is perf.
vampyric_lycan 20th-Sep-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
I would watch the fuck out of this. Ben Walker.

Mmmmm...
notoriousreign 20th-Sep-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
Benjamin Walker? Weren't they saying Brick was gonna be Renner or Pine? Ugh I would've loved to see either one in that role but at least Scarlett as Maggie was legit.

I would love to see this ugh.
minderbinder 20th-Sep-2012 11:13 pm (UTC)
Ben Walker >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Renner or Pine, tbh.

Since you have a Sansa icon I choose to take your word on that.
mellarks 20th-Sep-2012 11:15 pm (UTC)
Ben Walker is amazing! He has a lot of charisma onstage, is super talented, and I loved watching him. I didn't see Abe Lincoln, though. /bad fan
_pinkpornstar_ 20th-Sep-2012 11:19 pm (UTC)
That is an amazing photo of her.
natasha_hc 20th-Sep-2012 11:22 pm (UTC)
Guess this means we've now got to wait till 2014 before we get anymore of Scarlett & Renner's offscreen awesomeness *pout*. I was so hoping Renner would get the male lead.
notoriousreign 20th-Sep-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
Me too, me too. I would fantasize about it~

But the rumour got me reading the play (and then Streetcar) and now I love it for what it is. It looks like Ben will be good. :)
enid_keaner 20th-Sep-2012 11:32 pm (UTC)
She was damn amazing in A View from a Bridge.
sometimes_mbv 21st-Sep-2012 08:08 am (UTC)
forever jealous at anyone who has seen her on stage.
