I'm American and I agree. If I have to hear one bullshit argument that involves "Constitutional Rights" so people can be fat (soda "ban") or assholes (anti-gay, anti-Muslim, etc.), I'm packing my bags and moving. I give up trying to fix you America.
browniecakemix 21st-Sep-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
the soda thing is actually a legitimate issue tho, it's not the government's job to regulate what people eat

Yes. People that practice the religion of Islam can be of any race.
tees2mai 20th-Sep-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
well, technically Islam is the religion and Muslims are people who follow it.
beatlesluv 20th-Sep-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
Yea (and people convert to Islam all the time), but the bigotry tied to is has to do with race. :/
mjspice 21st-Sep-2012 01:36 pm (UTC)
Yep. People of any race can follow it.
nothingcleva89 21st-Sep-2012 04:19 pm (UTC)
Islam is the religion, people who follow it are Muslims. And though the religion has no specific race (as anyone can join), the American stereotype features those of Middle Eastern descent (even though, statistically, most are South Asian).

Sadly, some Americans seem to insist Middle Eastern people and "Indian" people are the same race/group/whatever, and being M-E automatically means you are a "terrorist," because googling or opening a book is too hard when you have people to scorn and oppress. And that is our post 9/11, Islamophobic world.
quejelapercois 20th-Sep-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)

give_mespace 20th-Sep-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
i believe strongly, like everyone, in freedom of speech. but its exploited as a loophole for hate speech which i think is wrong. especially when it causes violence and death. in that case, we can't let our pride get in the way of people's safety
quizblorg 20th-Sep-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
I agree with you on the hate speech part, but not on the second part. If you suppress speech just because it is met with violent protests, you give anybody the power to censor anything, simply by resorting to violence.

Edited at 2012-09-20 09:20 pm (UTC)
whitegirlthin 20th-Sep-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's a slippery slope
give_mespace 20th-Sep-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
i do agree with you. it's obviously a tricky situation. i think our main problem is that we're dealing with people's behavior outside of our country (not that this is bad), but we in our own country might generally resort to controversy of this nature peacefully, but we can't really teach another society to necessarily do the same. there hasn't been horrible backlash in the states, but how can we control/decide how people in other parts of the world will handle things that occur domestically. that would need to come from within their culture/society/etc. hope i didn't word this wrong or offensively. basically i just think people sometimes try to piss others off out of spite because they have the 'freedom' too, which i don't think is a reason for using that amendment.
artpopart 20th-Sep-2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
Hate speech is protected under the First Amendment. What someone classifies as hate speech, may not be what you or I would classify as such, and therein lies the danger. One instance, every person on ONTD who makes a slur at white people, that could win them a fine and/or a hefty jail sentence.

What the first amendment is doing is prohibiting any new political party/group coming to power and being able to revamp what can or cannot be said, ending any dissent. In the US, speech is protected. It can't be reworked by whomever is in authority. It's actually in the constitution for safety purposes. Remember, free speech only applies to the government limiting speech, not corporations, or your friends, or your neighbors down the street. You also can't harass someone.

If you were to speak out against the Catholic Church, that could win you a jail sentence in many countries throughout Europe. Kathy Griffin would be in trouble if she got caught performing her "The Catholic Church is full of kiddy f-ckers" routine.

About the video, it breaks every rule of Youtube. They're not taking it down because the traffic is making them money. Google/Youtube is not doing this out of support for free speech.
missjersey 20th-Sep-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
My Communication Law class talked about this exact issue since it deals with the freedom of speech and press etc.

This is such a complex problem to me. On the one hand, that asshole has every right to make a movie about his ideas of a religion/government and upload it on the Internet. On the other hand, it could be seen as slander (but that opens doors to PLENTY of other types of videos/books/plays etc.) and if that actress is to be believed, he tricked many people into thinking it was a movie about aliens (which I guess could tarnish their reputations).

It's awful what's happening over in the Middle East over this horrible and crappy "movie", but the chances of it being taken down are very slim.
missjersey 20th-Sep-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
But, if YouTube is a private organization (which it is), then they can take it down no problem.

Hmmm.
im_chris_hansen 20th-Sep-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
but youtube is the platform, they can take off any video they want (regardless of free speech)

they just want the hits/revenue, so they'll keep it up

quizblorg 20th-Sep-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
I think YouTube should only delete videos that contain hate speech - and as I understand it, the film just attacks Muhammed/religion, but not Muslims themselves. (I haven't watched it and may be wrong, though.)

I feel like they are only taking it down so that there isnt anymore violence, but that is not the video's doing. no one forced those thugs to kill the ambassador. you can't go out and beat people, destroy property, or kill people because someone disrespects your religion.

and im disturbed at the amount of Muslims and non religious folks in so many words saying that the violence in response to the video is okay. (ive been listening to discussions about it on BBC radio and im jealous that we aren't having the same types of intellegent convos on American radio...not even NPR)
artpopart 20th-Sep-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
Youtube is suppose to delete those videos automatically. Look at their flagging system, and the categories they have set.

I saw people doing skits in black face. Those were deleted instantly.

Youtube is leaving it up for financial purposes.
hera_bearrra 20th-Sep-2012 09:58 pm (UTC)
But it is an attack on Muslims. I haven't seen the video either but I've read that it employs brown face and racist stereotypes. And this director made the video specifically to incite Muslims. It's like those Qur'an burnings.

That's why I like Canada's free speech laws. You're allowed to say whatever you want, until you cross the line into hate-speech. then you have to stfu.
cherisheddreams 20th-Sep-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
I like that, USA should really follow that too!

Ugh, this is so wrong headed. Even if we had Canada's hate speech laws, we would not have Canada's government, their populace or judiciary.

Who do you think would be prosecuted under these law? People who criticize Christianity. Because Christians write the laws and run the government. That's why in Egypt it's always the Coptic Christians being imprisoned under the blasphemy laws and never Muslims who insult judaism.

These laws are far more often to suppress the rights of minorities.

This. It all about common sense, tbh. Everyone is also entitle to freedom but once you cross the line you get that taken away from you. Everything needs to have boundaries in a society and there should be consequences for the ones who don't respect the limits
velvetunicorn 20th-Sep-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
Yes! People sometimes think that means they can't say what they want but our laws state that the speech in question has to be seen as something that would incite violence.
zemi_chan 21st-Sep-2012 12:33 am (UTC)
I had no idea that Canada's free speech law was set up like that! Has the law been that way since the nation's founding, or...?

Apparently, there's gonna be a giant anti-jihad ad running all over NYC subways and it's causing a ruckus.

What the fuck is this shit here lately.
cricketgrl 20th-Sep-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
Please, why should this surprise you? NYC has been anti-Muslim/Islam for at least a decade now. Not like it wasn't prior to 2001 but it's far worse now.

Many Middle Easterners have fled the NYC area for greener pastures in Houston and California. Although I heard alot have moved to Florida as well.

My favourite Persian restaurant Pars Grille was moved from its wonderful Union Square location to the Hooker Alley. I think they've actually shut down Ali Babba to. :(
executivehpfan 20th-Sep-2012 09:28 pm (UTC)
I'd always heard that about NYC and registered it on some level, but I mean like...nationally, here lately, it feels like there's a fuckload of anti-Muslim/anti-Arab sentiment around. Maybe it's just me but I feel like it's been everywhere in the past few months. Fuckery.

I need to find this Pars Grille. Persian food = happy me.
give_mespace 20th-Sep-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
