Demi surprised students at The Young Women's Leadership School

Demi surprised students at The Young Women's Leadership School in East Harlem during a "Drama Free School Year" Anti-Bullying Assembly today

Demi Lovato has a secret to share: Growing up wasn't always easy for her.

"I had a really tough time when I was in middle school," the X Factor judge, 20, tells PEOPLE. "People would write 'hate petitions' [about me] and send them around to be signed. They'd have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They'd come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away."

It was so bad, in fact, that Lovato believes it's part of what led her to seek treatment for issues like an eating disorder and cutting nearly two years ago.

"Back then, there were times I didn't think I'd be able to move on," she admits.

Fortunately, Lovato has made it to the "other side," and is now drawing on those painful experiences as the new ambassador for Secret's "Mean Stinks" campaign, encouraging girls to "gang up for good" to end bullying in schools.

"I heard about the program last year, and thought it was such a great opportunity," Lovato says. "They're really trying to put an end to bullying."

Thursday morning, the star surprised students at New York City's Young Women's Leadership School to talk to them about the program, which asks girls to pledge to have a "Drama Free School Year" by making a pinky swear, symbolized by wearing blue nail polish on their pinky fingers.

"I'll definitely be wearing [the nail polish] starting soon," Lovato says. "It's a conversation starter: 'Hey, why is your pinky blue?' 'This is a pinky promise that I'm not going to bully people, that me and my friends are ganging up for good.' "

To help, Secret will donate $1 (up to $150,000) from the purchase of every Mean Stinks Clinical Strength deodorant to the cause. Learn more about the program on Secret's Facebook page.

Now if she could just die her hair back to brown, it would be like Camp Rock/Don't Forget era all over again.
anus 20th-Sep-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
Exactly what I was going to say. She's such a qt, but needs darker hair
silentxstrom 20th-Sep-2012 06:31 pm (UTC)
that era was such a good look for her.
djc114 20th-Sep-2012 06:11 pm (UTC)
Oh my gosh. "People would write 'hate petitions' [about me] and send them around to be signed." The girls did that to me in grade school. Holy crap. I always thought it was just me :(

ilovelucozade 20th-Sep-2012 06:41 pm (UTC)
Ouch.

The only person we did that to in grade school was our teacher.
hisdreamgirl_dn 21st-Sep-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
People used to make comics about me. =(
its_debatable 20th-Sep-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
Yes.
anus 20th-Sep-2012 06:17 pm (UTC)
Depends on how serious it was. In most cases, I'd say yes though.
evett 20th-Sep-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
If they actually know this person IRL then that is not cool. That is just asking for trouble.

But if they are playing around out of boredom over the computer with a stranger they'll never meet then I wouldn't think it was cheating.
bostongirl2003 20th-Sep-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
this is weird, but if it were only a role-playing sexting kind of thing with no personal info given out, I would say no.
shantayustay 20th-Sep-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
Totally.
ddlovato 20th-Sep-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)

sweetwaterpink 20th-Sep-2012 06:31 pm (UTC)
My rule is if you have to sneak around to do it then you know it's wrong. It's obvious that he know that you wouldn't approve of his behavior.
kristinkat 20th-Sep-2012 06:33 pm (UTC)
absolutley
takobella 20th-Sep-2012 06:55 pm (UTC)
Yes for sure, it's totally different than porn

In porn you're just watching a 'fantasy'

Here he's actually interacting and participating in the sexual act, who cares if the person is ot physically present? They might as well be

I'd dump his ass if I was you, but I'm a very unforgiving person
interrogatives 20th-Sep-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
idk if it's "cheating" but it's definitely questionable and shady behavior that deserves attention and discussion, imo. but i'm strict about cheating, where if you cheat, you get ditched. this isn't THAT severe, but still a breach of trust, etc etc, you know?
evett 20th-Sep-2012 06:12 pm (UTC)
those bangs are making her look 13 years old
yououghtaknow 20th-Sep-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)

insertcandyhere 20th-Sep-2012 06:15 pm (UTC)
She wears the bangs well.

This program sounds really cute. They should do the same for little boys too. Guys were fucking vicious as well when I was in grammar/middle school.

I'm glad she's using her fame to do this. But on shallow note, she needs to do something about her hair. It's not nagl.
shantayustay 20th-Sep-2012 06:17 pm (UTC)
I love clear deodorant.

I like her with blonde hair.
classicart 20th-Sep-2012 06:17 pm (UTC)
I still don't get how is she going to promote anti-bullying when she's on a show with "glorified" bully simon cowell.

shantayustay 20th-Sep-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
idk he has an artistic temperament like Gwyneth Paltrow.
evett 20th-Sep-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
I guess when you come on a show knowing you will be critiqued then it isn't bullying when you are asking for their opinion.

IMO bullying is constant harassment and intimidation. Just saying something mean isn't bullying.
classicart 20th-Sep-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
im talking about the influence of that show. kids who watch the show and think its okay to say the stuff he says to people in real life.
ddlovato 20th-Sep-2012 06:34 pm (UTC)
i think you are using bullying to loosely tbh... the contestants go on the show knowing what they are getting themselves in for, its not like they go pick random people off the street then say stand on a stage and let me make fun of you. its two different things. shes always had something to do w/ anti bullying campaigns before x factor and even before she went to rehab
bostongirl2003 20th-Sep-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
that is fucking horrible bb. :(

shantayustay 20th-Sep-2012 06:20 pm (UTC)
I am sorry.
babyyouloveit 20th-Sep-2012 08:38 pm (UTC)
That's terrible!
I just started my sophomore year of high school and I've been pretty lucky so far bullying-wise. I hope that lasts til I get out!
saltonmycuts 20th-Sep-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
She would look so much better with darker hair. And i'm tired of the bun lol this is like Miley all over again.
mydogfred 20th-Sep-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
qt pie
mundodeamor 20th-Sep-2012 06:27 pm (UTC)
Since people mentioned that it was actually her who was bullying others, everytime she talks about being bullied, I can't help but think it's all lies.
ztrellitaa 20th-Sep-2012 06:49 pm (UTC)
I don't know her story, but in my experience after being bullied so many years I took the first opportunity to bully others later on cause I thought it was the only way I could be happy you know? It's what my mind assumed I needed to do so others would like me and stop being bullied myself.

It obviously doesn't work, therapy helped me understand that and I now that I'm older I feel deeply ashamed and sad that I resorted to that.
scousing 20th-Sep-2012 07:18 pm (UTC)
Most bullies were bullied earlier in their life. It's a (bad) way of coping
mundodeamor 21st-Sep-2012 07:50 am (UTC)
I understand that, but I feel it's very hypocrital of her to preach about this and make it seem like she was a victim for her whole life.
silentxstrom 20th-Sep-2012 06:33 pm (UTC)
I like her jacket and dress, but her hair style and color look off.
