Gwyneth Paltrow: I make my children watch TV in French or Spanish

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who raises two kids with husband Chris Martin, says that she only allows her children to watch television in French or Spanish instead of their native English.

"Apple was cross as I only let them watch TV in French or Spanish. When I'm in France, I go to Boulevard Beaumarchais and buy all their cartoons," she said.

The 39-year-old also spoke about her own "draconian diet" and while she has eased the macrobiotic lifestyle, she still cheats every now and then, reported Daily Mail.

"I was very strict for a while, I was macrobiotic for a couple of years, then I got pregnant and just ate ice cream. What I've learned is that I want to enjoy my life, and food is a big part of it. I love to cook and feed people. I cook every day.

"My indulging is a fresh baguette with cheese and a glass of red wine or french fries and fried zucchini. Or a turkey burger," she said.

Paltrow also said her marriage to Martin is still going strong after nine years because of a strong friendship bond they share.

"Probably our artistic temperaments. Artists are sensitive; there are ups and downs mood-wise. Musicians need a certain gravitas and focus in order to write. The temperament that goes with someone who is creative can be challenging. I focus more on understanding than being understood."

That's nice. This older couple I knew spoke to their children in English and Spanish, and had them go to a French immersion school. Wish my daddy had the money for that shit.

my dad's cousin moved to london and got married to a brazilian and they have a little daughter, I met her when she was about 2 and even back then she was fluent in english, portuguese, slovak and understanded czech... also she knows exactly in what language she should speak to others (to dad in portuguese, to mom in slovak, to friends in english...) I'd love to see my kid being like that

sixseventytwo 20th-Sep-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
This. I so want to put my future kid in immersion school so they can be multi-lingual. I went to private school when I was little and they started us on learning Spanish right from kindergarten.
ben_superdetka 20th-Sep-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
this is awesome, and i plan on doing that to my kid. provided i ever have one, obviously
gypsy_leerose 20th-Sep-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
That's awesome

my parents put me in a french school from the getgo because my mom's french. it sucks for my dad though because he barely understands it!

How many comments of 'BUT I WAS RAISED THIS WAY!!!' til people realize that it's not WHAT she's doing, it's that it's Goop, therefore comes off as pretentious as fuck?
distant_lines 20th-Sep-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
Seriously...like I don't think it's bad that she does this, but she just sounds so freaking obnoxious every time she opens her mouth. It doesn't feel like she says this to try and share her experiences or maybe help other people or whatever, but just to be like, haha I'm better!
ztrellitaa 20th-Sep-2012 06:11 pm (UTC)
That's my problem with her, she makes some comments that I see are natural in such a pretentious way that I can't help but rme at her.
galagooo 20th-Sep-2012 05:27 pm (UTC)
Did she actually say cross? Or is this something like when English reporters write "mum" even though the American they interviewed said "mom"?
abbiemills 20th-Sep-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
It's Goop. She probably said it.

"My indulging is a fresh baguette with cheese and a glass of red wine or french fries and fried zucchini. Or a turkey burger".

That's what I have when I'm trying to be healthy...
beaddddddsss 20th-Sep-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
lol mte and that shit can be healthy in moderation or with the right oils/type of bread. Fuck that minimal fat shit.
shanny_w 20th-Sep-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
PPL ARE STARVING THEIR BRAINS OF FAT!! ~*healthy brain, healthy body*~
silentxstrom 20th-Sep-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
ikr. I don't know why ppl deprive themselves of junk food. Eating a doughnut or fried Oreos once in a while isn't going to make you fat or have health problems.
xtinkerbellax 20th-Sep-2012 05:48 pm (UTC)
The turkey burger is a weird "indulgence" but all of the other stuff makes sense. I mean, imo anything fried is an indulgence.
mynamehere07 20th-Sep-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
Now you know she's not actually eating it. She just has her full time chef make and she sits and looks at it while she drinks the wine.
sassi214 20th-Sep-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
Seriously, how is a turkey burger indulgent?
highflyer8 20th-Sep-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)

Mine too. She's the only celeb I allow my self to irrationally hate. The woman could cure AIDS and cancer and I would bitch that she was so smug while accepting her Nobel prize.
ronnie_luvs_u 20th-Sep-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
Are ONTD's legions of broke, pressed college students going to wank about this again?
xpirate_queenx 20th-Sep-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
Hey, we've gotta have something to help us get through the day.
ronnie_luvs_u 20th-Sep-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
but this is old news. needs a new statement from her, otherwise wank's been done.
sastra_fuss 20th-Sep-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
You need some new ontd vocab...
prophecy_grl 20th-Sep-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
What, no Japanese or Urdu? Pedestrian ass bitch.
galagooo 20th-Sep-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
They should learn Chinese because it's better for business.
prophecy_grl 20th-Sep-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
I was joking. But yeah you're right.
mmmyesplease 20th-Sep-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
Gurl, you know she don't curr about anything in Asia.
idreaminargyle LMAO!!!20th-Sep-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
this comment made me choke on my tea IRL I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY
abbiemills 20th-Sep-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
Spanish is the most common, but it depends on what field you want to get into. IIRC, a lot of places are really responding well to people who know Japanese or Chinese now.
sky3205 20th-Sep-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
what do you do, if you don't mind asking?
galagooo 20th-Sep-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
In the US, probably Spanish.
For international business, Chinese and French.
ponpiri 20th-Sep-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
Depends on where you live and what industry. Spanish is the best bet in the US.
distant_lines 20th-Sep-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
Eh...you think we all say gay people have aids and will die when we're with our friends. Your opinion doesn't mean much.
toilandblood 20th-Sep-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
I;ve always wanted to.
did you grow up learning the languages or did you learn on your own?
manu19 20th-Sep-2012 05:56 pm (UTC)
i tried to learn spanish but it was just too hard for me. they talk way too fast for me to understand anything. i remember doing my listening exam in college and i was supposed to write down numbers that come up during a conversation and i was like "huh" where was the number, i didnt even hear them mentioning one :D

so now i'm stuck with english and german
janeeyre 20th-Sep-2012 06:02 pm (UTC)
I'm really trying french. I wish I could speak another language.
nasstasja_sk 20th-Sep-2012 06:09 pm (UTC)
English, Croatian, Swedish, Norwegian, German, Spanish, Italian and not even close to being done. Languages are love.
spiderkelly 20th-Sep-2012 06:44 pm (UTC)
lolol. this comment is about x1000 more pretentious than any goop quote.
roguedandelion 20th-Sep-2012 06:48 pm (UTC)
Well you don't sound smug and self-satisfied.
jessepinkman 20th-Sep-2012 06:50 pm (UTC)

I don't know how some people can be happy with themselves only speaking one language

mte. i went to france and italy and the majority of those losers only spoke one language. like hello, quit being so boring.
annita008 20th-Sep-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
cool :D I wanna be like that too..I speak spanish and english fluently and I'm learning french now..but its hard sometimes :(
enchantedkiss_x 20th-Sep-2012 07:47 pm (UTC)
Those are the languages I speak, as well! Well, I'm not really fluent in French yet, but I've been taking classes for a while. English is my first language and I minored in Spanish in college. I'm hoping to study Italian eventually, too. Once you learn one new language, it's fairly easy to learn more (at least, in the romance languages)!
tearyeyedx 20th-Sep-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)
same here and i agree. being multi-lingural is a wonderful thing.
itspokerface 20th-Sep-2012 09:59 pm (UTC)
I speak english and spanish fluently too. And a little bit of french and portuguese.
IA in the second thing you say, I respect my friends but I can't understand their apathy with english, they loathe it. I feel that knowing english has to be basic bc it's everywhere now.
statr 21st-Sep-2012 01:21 am (UTC)
This! I'm fluent in Filipino and English. I can converse in Spanish and Japanese, and still in the process of being fluent for those languages. I plan to take a fifth one in a few years' time.

Languages are amazing. I wish I can learn a Scandinavian language but I don't think there are any classes for those being offered here.
filmfreakfranco 20th-Sep-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
this is actually good for her children.

it's difficult to learn a new language when you're grown-up.
velvetunicorn 20th-Sep-2012 08:22 pm (UTC)
ia. it can be done but they'll be thankful when they're older that they know these languages.
powerbottom 20th-Sep-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
Yeah, and even if they don't really put them to use if they need to go back and learn it will be easier for them to do so.
distant_lines 20th-Sep-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
Because I can't even handle the obnoxiousness from her I have to talk about the French movie I watched last night.

I finally watched Martyrs and holy effing hell! Why did no one ever warn me about the last like 30 minutes of that film?! OMG! Saw is like puppies and rainbows compared to this movie.
la_petite_singe 20th-Sep-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
No one warned you?! It's so infamously fucked up!
distant_lines 20th-Sep-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
Nope, no one! I was not prepared for that shit!

thatdamnbroad 20th-Sep-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
I only got around to watching Irreversible the other night and I'm still traumatized to death over that shit, no way am I watching this one D:
