Marvel Confirms What Everyone Already Knows; Thanks, Guys

Big Bad Purple People Eater To Be Villain of Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers 2

This just in: "Duh."

This summer's runaway blockbuster The Avengers, like most Marvel Studios movies before it, included a big teaser during the closing credits for upcoming Marvel movies. The twist was[SPOILER ALERT for a movie everyone in the world has already seen] that Thanos, the purple intergalactic conqueror, was coming in future films. Presumably, we all figured, in The Avengers 2. It therefore only stood to reason that James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movie would follow suit, introducing Thanos properly before he made it all the way to Earth, just like Loki in the first Thor movie. It would be weirder if it didn't, what with that movie taking place in space and all.

So it's both reasonable and predictable that word has come forth that Thanos will indeed be "The Big Bad" in both films. The source of the story, first published at Cosmic Book News, is none other than Jim Starlin, who created the character Thanos back Iron Man #55 in February of 1973. Starlin confirmed, but was not directly quoted, that he knows his creation will be used in both The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2. Starlin may not be a big wheel at Marvel Studios, and may only have been alerted due to his status as the villain's creator, but it stands to reason that he wouldn't lie about something like this, nor would he have been told the information if it wasn't true.

Like other comic book movie stories lately, this news isn't really a game changer, but rather something fans could have naturally extrapolated for themselves. Still, nice to hear that Marvel Studios is following understandable storytelling logic.

I mean honestly, why the hell wouldn't they? It would be extraordinarily shitty of them to tease us with Thanos, then have the villain be oh I don't know, Stilt-Man or something...

fwee_prower 20th-Sep-2012 05:35 am (UTC)
to create back story.
bodyline 20th-Sep-2012 05:36 am (UTC)
yes but why put it in a movie no1curr about
ayaneva 20th-Sep-2012 06:23 am (UTC)
Yeah, I know nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy but the fact that it apparently involves a space raccoon with a gun doesn't really make me want to watch it, tbh. I was fine watching Avengers without watching Captain America or Thor (I did watch them later) so I imagine I'll manage just fine if I skip over Guardians and just dive into Avengers 2. I'll just Wikipedia the stuff I don't know.
josiefier 20th-Sep-2012 05:31 am (UTC)

No, I couldn't resist.

LMAO all I can think about whenever someone mentions Thanos being in Avengers 2 are these panels from the Avengers Assemble comics.

Erg, he looks like the offspring of the Grimace & Barney the Dinosaur.
devlinacardigan 20th-Sep-2012 05:47 am (UTC)
This is the first thing that came to mind. I'm assuming they're two different creations and this guy isn't the one that'll be in The Avengers 2.

shouldn't Galacticus be in Guardians of the Galaxy

Because he's a Fantastic Four property, and therefore owned by Fox.
brucelynn 20th-Sep-2012 05:34 am (UTC)
His appearance at the end slayed me

I seriously screamed
amber_protocol 20th-Sep-2012 07:58 am (UTC)
This reminds me of when Iron Man came out and I went to see it with my comic book loving friend. She was geeking the fuck out when Nick Fury came in at the end and was trying to explain to me the epicness of what was happening onscreen and I had no clue (never read a comic in my life besides Asterix).

Cut to 2012 and I'm flailing like a crazy person over The Avengers. So yeah, Thanos means nothing to me but I'm sure I'll be flailing once TA2 comes out lmao.
xdecadentx 20th-Sep-2012 10:39 am (UTC)
I didn't know who it was. I was like 'I HAVE A FEELING THIS IS VERY SIGNIFICANT BUT IDK'
mingemonster 20th-Sep-2012 01:25 pm (UTC)
I knew from reading so many "if it's Thanos I'll scream" comments, and then people freaked the fuck out in the theater and I was like "oh"
xpirate_queenx 20th-Sep-2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
I flailed incoherently; couldn't even find words.
cruel_fortuna 20th-Sep-2012 05:34 am (UTC)
The director for Guardians of the Galaxy also posted about this on his Facebook page.

( Lol - stilt-man is about as useful or more so than Ant-Man imo. )

fwee_prower 20th-Sep-2012 05:36 am (UTC)
i bet you the fight scenes in Guardians are going to be so epic everyone is going to be shitting themselves especially at rocket raccoon.
cruel_fortuna 20th-Sep-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
Considering it's being directed by the same guy who gave us that shitty 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
cyberghostface 20th-Sep-2012 05:49 am (UTC)
And Joss Whedon wrote Alien Resurrection.
winter_lace 20th-Sep-2012 05:37 am (UTC)
Is this the random purple man that was supposedly Wesley Wyndym Price?
chaquitalicia04 20th-Sep-2012 06:38 am (UTC)
He voiced him, yes.
arrowtoes 20th-Sep-2012 07:17 am (UTC)
Alexis Denisof voiced the "there is no crevice where he can't find you" dude, I've read he's called The Other. I don't think Thanos even talks during the movie? He just smiles at the end.
superboy 20th-Sep-2012 05:39 am (UTC)
Marvel is doing too much now tbh. Chill with everything except Captain America cuz nom Chris Evans. The hell with everyone else.
deadtree 20th-Sep-2012 05:56 am (UTC)
*and Thor (fixed it for ya)
milesaway 20th-Sep-2012 06:03 am (UTC)

smirrethefox 20th-Sep-2012 06:04 am (UTC)
And Thor and Iron Man. They need to be there too. Steve needs Tony and Thor in his life.
endingonfire 20th-Sep-2012 02:01 pm (UTC)
moar female hero movies though.
black_phoenix 20th-Sep-2012 04:15 pm (UTC)
Lady Captain Marvel movie, please.
drasticsigns 20th-Sep-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
I've wanted to get into Marvel Cosmic for a while, so hopefully in anticipation for the film, they spotlight some worthwhile series.
quirkyblah38 20th-Sep-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
I still want to see a Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo. Perfect Bruce Banner.

co-sign
beoweasel 20th-Sep-2012 05:48 am (UTC)
I can agree with you. It'd be nice to have a Hulk movie that doesn't suck.
winter_lace 20th-Sep-2012 06:09 am (UTC)
Third times lucky there.
brownxeyedxdork 20th-Sep-2012 06:29 am (UTC)
I don't know. I mean don't get me wrong, I loved Mark as Bruce, but at the same time I think they should just stop with the Hulk movies and just have Bruce pop up in other films as a secondary character or something.
britt_m_89 20th-Sep-2012 08:13 am (UTC)
Nooo I need a full-length movie of nothing but Mark!Bruce. Seriously I love him too much for him to just pop up in other movies.

The Hulk doesn't really work as a main character.

He works well on the side because he can be utilized well in key moments. As an individual character carrying his own film, there's not much there.

It's like visiting your obese Asian relative and their two year old post globalization baby. It may be cute when he rolls around on his fat folds and attempts to chew through your shoes after mistaking it for a hot dog; but it becomes pretty annoying after five minutes.
xpirate_queenx 20th-Sep-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
Planet Hulk or Joe Fixit, plox. The he's-on-the-run-from-the-government horse has been beaten too much already.
