Brad Pitt Producing a Film to Expose How IBM Helped the Nazis

Hollywood leading man Brad Pitt is preparing to produce a movie that will examine the role played by computer giant IBM in the Holocaust. The film – in which Pitt may star as well – will be based on the popular book by Edwin Black, IBM and the Holocaust.

Set to be produced through Pitt’s Plan B production company, the movie’s script will be penned by Marcus Hinchey; it is still not clear who will direct the project

Black’s revealing book, which was published in 2001 and became a New York Times best-seller, offered an in-depth study of Thomas Watson, who served as IBM’s chief executive during the years of World War II. Based on evidence he uncovered through extensive research, Black alleged that Watson created a “strategic alliance” with Nazi Germany, and employed its computer processing punch card system to enable the Germans to identify Jews under Nazi domain in an expedited manner.

Pitt, who is the father of six children with fiancée Angelina Jolie, claims he has no qualms about making movies that his children are unable to view at this time. “I’m actually more interested in the films that they’re going to enjoy when they’re adults,” he said.

Four for you Brad. I wish more companies would come clean on how they helped the ones doing evil through out history.

Nazi's bankrolled Mercedes Benz for their transportation
ritzyroxie 20th-Sep-2012 03:47 am (UTC)
Yeah. My uncle sold them to them, actually.
i_am_sydbristow 20th-Sep-2012 03:50 am (UTC)
barf. matching couples are contrived
fuckyess 20th-Sep-2012 03:50 am (UTC)

why not just each buy your own, wtf is that
raised_eyebrows 20th-Sep-2012 03:58 am (UTC)

That's what I think of whenever I see a Mercedes.

beatlesluv 20th-Sep-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
It's sad how true colours come out after you shell out your money. I use to watch Mel Gibson moves, I hate to admit that Braveheart was one of my jams, but it is what it is.
isntdaveone 20th-Sep-2012 03:45 am (UTC)

he should stop making movies that he wants to see and make movies that WE want to see.

wtf happened to him!?

I'm interested in this. :/

the last 7 years were his best, got 2 oscar nominations and the box office numbers
are quite good,so people do see his movies.
fabouluz 20th-Sep-2012 10:06 am (UTC)
I'd rather so a dramatic piece than a fucking superhero action movie costing a billion dollars.
greencancer 20th-Sep-2012 11:50 am (UTC)
Well I like all his movies...
kwikimart 20th-Sep-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
What?
He is making good movies, interesting, intellectual stuff also mixed with fun but still smart things.
He has a great career now, he's even more diverse and interesting than Leo D.
possevi 20th-Sep-2012 03:46 am (UTC)
When I tell people about how major companies helped out the Nazi's, they always looks at me like I'm crazy.
kalie_m 20th-Sep-2012 03:49 am (UTC)
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that every company was helping the Nazi's, because a company would have lost a ton of money if they didn't supply to them.
possevi 20th-Sep-2012 03:52 am (UTC)
I'm not arguing that point, but American companies, before the US got involved in the war, were supplying them with money and supplies.
beaute__exquise 20th-Sep-2012 03:50 am (UTC)
takes a village

i don't get why people think they did it alone
fluxy_2535 20th-Sep-2012 03:57 am (UTC)
Yeah, whenever I tell people Hugo Boss was a huge Nazi people don't believe me or act like he was forced into it. He joined the party a few years before Hitler did, so...
staygoldpnyboy 20th-Sep-2012 04:33 am (UTC)
tell me! i wont look at you like youre crazy
hazel_belle 20th-Sep-2012 04:38 am (UTC)
I tell them they have their heads stuck in their ass if the refuse to believe it, and than I tell them to google it if they don't believe me.

I feel smug when they don't have a comeback.
beatlesluv 20th-Sep-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
But where do they think the Nazi's got their money from? Do they think they pulled it out of their ass, and pissed pots of gold? They need to get serious.
lovebats 20th-Sep-2012 11:27 am (UTC)
some don't care, and some rather live in denial.
fuck_of_nature 20th-Sep-2012 03:46 am (UTC)
Should be interesting. I've read the book, though a while ago. I like hearing about these different aspects.

Actually just got back from watching a film called Black Survivors of the Holocaust. My professor asked how many people knew about the persecution of black people during the Nazi era and only like four of thirty raised their hands.
babysinclair 20th-Sep-2012 03:48 am (UTC)
I understand why there is a focus of the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust but the other 6 million who died with them are just ignored.
fuck_of_nature 20th-Sep-2012 03:55 am (UTC)
Yeah, I agree. My German professor is really great about showing the other groups. Last year she focused more on the Roma and she wrote a book on a Romani woman who survived the Holocaust and this semester she gave us this insight into the black experience.

I'm a Holocaust/Genocide Studies major, so it's not that surprising to me, but it makes me happy to see other people becoming more aware of it.
quinnthevixen 20th-Sep-2012 03:41 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it's unfortunate; it's important to honor the memory of all those who were murdered during WWII. My husband and I visited a small concentration camp (the closest one to Berlin) called Sachsenhausen which was largely used to inter Russian POWs, Romani people, people suspected to be gay, etc. It was, of course, devastating to see but also very interesting to learn, since my husband (who is Jewish) had heard so much about the Jewish persecution throughout his childhood but so much less about the persecution of others.
chihaya19 20th-Sep-2012 04:13 am (UTC)
yeah my parents are jews and i didn't even know that :/ man everyone fucks over black people
fluxy_2535 20th-Sep-2012 04:42 am (UTC)
I was just reading about how they treated black people like a week ago and it made me sick to my stomach. It's horrifyingly fascinating how they treated people other than the jews.
akasha6915 20th-Sep-2012 08:00 am (UTC)
That reminds me of my last History class. My teacher asked us what the first genocide of the 200th century, and I was the only one of 30+ who knew.

Most outside of the treat of the Jews during the Holocaust I know about mostly focuses on Jehovah Witness's and the LGBTQ community. A teacher I had in high school actually taught about the other aspects, and explained why the triangle is used as a LGBTQ symbol. She went off on the class when she noticed the "No Homophobia" sign defaced, and used "Maus" as a teaching tool. One of the best History Teachers I have ever had.
ritzyroxie 20th-Sep-2012 03:49 am (UTC)
Sounds fascinating.

Perhaps not as illuminating as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but revelatory nonetheless.

wouldn't that be treason?
beaute__exquise 20th-Sep-2012 03:51 am (UTC)
took so long to join that war

and even then

smhc @ our government
duckyduck92 20th-Sep-2012 03:54 am (UTC)
the government passed numerous anti-trade laws against the nazis and japanese, but of course businesses like ford and IBM found ways around it. :/
dannyupshaw 20th-Sep-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
i love your naivete
hazel_belle 20th-Sep-2012 04:44 am (UTC)
Business is Business, there always exist loopholes. Unless they were giving military secrets, not much would be done. Sure people might get in trouble but it would never touch the top. Besides, the Gov't wanted to stay neutral for the most part until Pearl Harbor. Than shit hit the fan and we entered the war.
skeet_skeet 20th-Sep-2012 04:55 am (UTC)
Corporations are out to make a profit, everything else be damned. If they find legal loopholes they exploit them, and they'll do it every time. And the US wasn't at war with Nazi Germany until 1941. Nazi Germany was born in 1933, so there was plenty of time to collaborate with US companies.
snuffbox 20th-Sep-2012 05:29 am (UTC)
No. IBM did business with the Nazis under a German-owned subsidiary called Dehomag. Since Dehomag was a subsidiary of IBM, they were able to use all of IBM's technology, giving them a leg up on actual European companies. Using this leg up, Dehomag/IBM secured contracts with the Nazis for card sorting machines to identify "undesirables" in the population. Despite German laws restricintg the movement of currency from the country, IBM listed patent royalty payments from Dehomag to IBM as "expenses" instead of dividends on Dehomag's income statements, as dividends were exempt from the German restrictions. IBM hid behind the Dehomag name the entire war, and rather than admit knowledge doing business with the Nazis and being stuck doing business in Germany, the president of IBM later denied any knowledge of being aware of what the Nazi's were doing with IBM's technology and machinery.

diamond_dust06 20th-Sep-2012 03:56 am (UTC)
There are people who aggressively deny that the Holocaust even happened, so people's ignorance about this would not come as a shock to me.
hazel_belle 20th-Sep-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
Sadly, it isn't as widely known as it should be and it is a shame. A lot of people don't know that such large companies were participants. Unless you take a class on it or research on your own... people won't know until they are told and it is repeated to them.
toilandblood 20th-Sep-2012 05:11 am (UTC)
yep there's even a book on it called "IBM and the Holocaust"

seriously? ugh
fluxy_2535 20th-Sep-2012 04:06 am (UTC)
Bayer has done some REALLY fucked up shit. I remember reading about them infecting hemophiliacs with HIV in the 80's because they used infected blood to create the drugs for them from prisons without testing it beforehand.
bellyroomfan 20th-Sep-2012 03:28 pm (UTC)
i don't really hold grudges against most of the companies that were involved with the nazis but i learned about that testing when i was like 10 and i've never used a beyer product since.
ponpiri 20th-Sep-2012 03:54 am (UTC)
That's interesting. I can't remember her name, but this lady won a psychic game show and had a bunch of predictions on YT (she also said Robsten would break up by summer fyi). She said that Brad would work on an interesting/controversial movie but he wouldn't get any awards or nominations for it. lawl
headswillroll88 20th-Sep-2012 03:55 am (UTC)
i could have predicted these things tho, both were inevitable lol
ponpiri 20th-Sep-2012 04:02 am (UTC)
From last year? (or were you ripping on Brad's skills lol) She was wrong about robsten though. The guy asked her if a "3rd party" was involved and she said no, they would break up because their careers are moving in diff directions.

You know how many automobile companies you could tie to the Nazis? Daimler-Benz (Mercedes), Porsche, Volkswagen, BMW who used forced labor from concentration camps (to be fair I can't remember if BMW did or just a family who bought into them)

I feel like you couldn't find a car company that didn't have nefarious roots.

Volvo maybe?
thetxbelle 20th-Sep-2012 04:05 am (UTC)
A lot of European car companies made cars, aircrafts, machinery etc for Hitler, even Renault.
skeet_skeet 20th-Sep-2012 05:01 am (UTC)
Even American car companies have shady moments in their histories, and let's not forget Japanese car companies as well. If we stopped ourselves from buying things because the corporations/companies that produced them did terrible things we'd be walking around naked.
treebraids 20th-Sep-2012 07:50 am (UTC)
Are you going to stop using sugar because the companies were built on the back of slavery? or clothes manufactured in 3rd world sweatshops?

I feel like years down the road we'll find out major sketch stuff that companies like Google and Microsoft are involved with.

I know about Louis Vuitton and Chanel, but not as much about the others. On the other hand, I did know Lindberg was a huge Nazi supporter and moved to Germany after his son died in the kidnapping.
