Robyn Lawley Becomes First Plus Size Ralph Lauren Model

Plus-size shapes have been inching further and further into the mainstream, from magazine covers like Vogue Italia and Glamour to high-end designer lines like Burberry. But Robyn Lawley, one of the most successful plus-size models in the biz, is going where no plus-size stunner has gone before: Ralph Lauren.

Lawley announced her new gig as the first plus-size model for Ralph Lauren on "Good Morning America" today. The size 12 model, who stands at a statuesque 6 feet 2 inches tall, spoke to "GMA" about her journey to get here -- how she initially worked as a "straight" model at age 16, felt the pressure to diet and change her body, and eventually hit her stride as a plus-size mode at 19.

Now she's starring in a new Ralph Lauren campaign, not to mention landing magazine covers and lingerie ads. (This after her splashy start on the cover of Vogue Italia's famous plus-size issue.)

The majority of the industry may still select skinnier-than-thou models, but at age 23, Lawley is representative of the potential success a plus-size model can have. "There are so many plus-size models in New York doing so well at the moment," she tells "GMA," "and it's only going to get better."

We hope so -- if Ralph Lauren could come all this way, we bet other brands can too.

Yeah, that's true. I guess it's easier to eliminate fabric than add it. It's fucking expensive to alter everything though. I mean pants are one thing, but dresses? That costs a lot of money and it usually ends up destroying the look of the dress because it's not just a matter of chopping some fabric off the skirt - they also usually have to pull up the top and adjust it. But given that all clothes (at least designer clothes) are modelled by women who are like 6 feet tall, why do tall women have a hard time finding stuff? Would they find stuff easily if they were rich and could shop for the "couture" clothes designed for models, but it's harder in regular-people stores? Do the designers just make special long clothes for the models but then never sell them in the stores? (I am genuinely curious because I have never been tall and thus never looked for tall clothes)

Ah, that is interesting, thanks. So like for this Ralph Lauren model they would just make her a custom replica of whatever they are going to sell as part of their line, but long enough for a 6'2 woman? That's some false advertising :P

This is kind of off topic, but I'm 5'10" and I found that pants at NY&Co. are actually rather long on me when I get the tall size. You might want to try their pants. It isn't really cheap but they are comfy and fit me well (because I'm tall and have hips and a butt)
