Chris Brown abuse warning stickers boost sales

Sales of Chris Brown's album Fortune may have actually been boosted by prank labels warning customers that he "beats women", it has been claimed.

Images showing copies of the 'Don't Wake Me Up' singer's LP carrying the warnings, which refer to his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna, went viral last week after pranksters targeted the shelves of an HMV store outside London.

A representative for the company has now said that while the protestors "got their point across pretty effectively", they may have inadvertently revived interest in the album, which was released over two months ago.

"We were as surprised as anyone when the stickers appeared," the spokesperson stated.

"Obviously someone must have snuck in to put them on a handful of CDs, and although they weren't up very long before staff removed them, the person responsible managed to take a snap and send it out to media.

"I guess they got their point across pretty effectively - with widespread coverage around the world, though, by the same token, quite a few more people now know there's a new Chris Brown album out."

The warning labels appeared shortly after Brown was thought to have gotten a tattoo of Rihanna's beaten face on his neck. The inking was later revealed to be of a Mexican 'sugar skull'.

Brown is set to face questions over how much of the community service to which he was sentenced in the Rihanna case was actually served.

Talk about backfire. I know these people are mad.

I can see that point. I definitely didn't know that douchebag had a new album out until I saw that either.
goodassjob 19th-Sep-2012 02:50 pm (UTC)
This is why I tried to tell people here, if you don't like him. Stop posting about him and giving him all your attention. You're ultimately only keeping him more relevant and doing the complete opposite of your point. That's why this is funny to me. These people really thought they were about to sabotage him by doing this when in reality they just made themselves looked really bothered AND brought more attention to his record.

You might know about it, but do you wanna rush out and buy it?

If the stickers make people stop and think twice (and obviously come to the conclusion he's a bell end and not buy it) then they'll have done some good, regardless of whether or not they knew he had an album out before.

Part of me is always surprised when I see someone talking about CD sales in this day and age.
atomicdogmeat 19th-Sep-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
Me too. Physical copies of media are so 20th century.
antique_faery 19th-Sep-2012 03:05 pm (UTC)
It surprises me too, but depresses me that it does. I have gone back to wanting physical copies, but just try to get what you want by walking into a Best Buy anymore. Just try. :( Have to wait for Amazon or Ebay now.

ikr me too
givemethepeasx 19th-Sep-2012 03:39 pm (UTC)
why? physical releases still make up half of all music sales.
fireprince 19th-Sep-2012 05:06 pm (UTC)
Boooo..... I still like having a physical copy of music. When I still had a windows PC it crashed and I had to go through the trouble of downloading most of my music again. One of my saving graces was that I had physical CDs of my favorite artist so I was able to add those to Itunes quickly. A lot of people don't think it'll happen to them and don't think to back that shit up.

These people have heard of reverse psychology before, haven't they? That, or people are just too idiotic to care otherwise. Maybe both?
invisible_cunt 19th-Sep-2012 02:52 pm (UTC)
chris brown fans don't seem to be the brightest crayons in the box though

roguedandelion 19th-Sep-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
This isn't surprising. The whole reason he still has a career in the first place is that his fans don't give a fuck about domestic violence, they probably saw Breezy was "under attack" and rallied to his defense and bought more albums. They are sick fucks tbh.
mynamehere07 19th-Sep-2012 03:07 pm (UTC)
Not only do they not care, but they endorse it. They tweet things like "He can beat me anyday." "If he hit me, I probably would have deserved it." "Rihanna is such a cunt for not forgiving him" etc....
goodassjob 19th-Sep-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
It's not just his fans though. It takes way more than that. The industry has to support him, other artists have to support him, his label, etc. Fans are just a small part of that. Nobody really cares anymore truthfully.
hypnology 19th-Sep-2012 03:12 pm (UTC)
I'm not trying to sound like I'm supporting him (because I'm not. I only his song Forever) but fans tend to buy music because they like the music. Personal life factors, including being a woman beater, isn't necessarily going to stop fans/people from liking the music.
winninglondon 19th-Sep-2012 03:00 pm (UTC)
Still not enough sales to make the album a hit though. You tried
goodassjob 19th-Sep-2012 03:04 pm (UTC)
Fortune is the 2nd best selling R&B album of this year both in the US and WW and only slightly behind Usher's Looking 4 Myself. Lmao. R&B sales in general are just shit right now.
hypnology 19th-Sep-2012 03:01 pm (UTC)
I understand the hate of Chris Brown and his lack of forgivness, but I think putting that on his album was pretty stupid.

tbh i agree. i don't like him either, but that's pretty tacky

same
ponpiri 19th-Sep-2012 03:34 pm (UTC)
I agree, but people will hold on to it for the duration of his career.
thewunderland 19th-Sep-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)

ilovelucozade 19th-Sep-2012 04:15 pm (UTC)
