Tsk, tsk, Jimmy Kimmel (and your writers).
In an item connected to the coming Emmy Awards, late-night TV talk-show guy Kimmel made fun of British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who is nominated for his starring role in the TV series Sherlock. The show is made by the BBC and shown on PBS in the U.S. (You can watch the video below. )
Isn’t making fun of a person’s name something that little children do in the schoolyard?
This doesn’t speak well for people “in the colonies,” you know.
Can’t a grownup comic (and his writers, quite highly paid no doubt) come up with something more clever than that?
And more original, too? As a joke, it’s a very old one by now. Not quite as old as “Take my wife. . . please,” but it’s right up there.
Kimmel sent people out in the street to ask “What’s a cumberbatch?” Using “what” instead of “who” makes it a bit of a trick question, don’t you think? For people who aren’t used to having a camera thrust in their faces?
Some of the answers were quite rude, but some were humorously appropriate:
“Something rich people from England wear?” – Cumberbatch is often given “posh” roles, was recently embroiled in controversy about “poshness.”
“Something a man uses. . . for sex?” – To Cumberbatch’s own surprise, he has become a sex symbol for his worldwide following of “fangirls.”
Comments on YouTube include:
“You are so late to the party, America.”
“Even in Finland we have Sherlock playing on our TV, and it’s one of the few really great TV shows out there.”
I’m from the Philippines and I know this guy. America, you’re missing out.”
“Benedict will kick your American a. . . “
“He does NOT have a silly name. The Weeping Cumberbabes will come for you. Don’t blink, or you’re dead.”
“A Cumberbatch is the best thing happened to the tv/cinema in the last 10 years ’nuff said”
BTW: If I sound all indignant, I’m not really, I just think that this is a very tired joke, that’s all.

“A Cumberbatch is the best thing happened to the tv/cinema in the last 10 years ’nuff said”
like he is basically the nagini of doctor who.
NO
He got made fun of when he first got famous in the UK, too.
*Drinking that blogger's tears right now*
Is it too long? Too terrifying?
It's like someone misspelled the word "cumbersome" pretty badly
I'm just rejoicing that anybody is talking about him on American TV, at all, whether they're making fun of him or not.
And that name is goddamned ridiculous.
