Jourdan Dunn Bags 6th i-D mag cover; Talks All-Black Philip Treacy Show

Jourdan Dunn is photographed by Emma Summerton for i-D's Role Model issue. She tweeted the photo with the caption: Oh Look what we got here......another ID COVER!!!!!!! This is the model's 6th cover for the magazine. Her previous cover was the November 2011 issue.

In an industry where black models struggle to find work, Philip Treacy's bold and mesmerising catwalk show featuring only black models is sensational progress

Milliner Philip Treacy made a sensational return to London Fashion Week tonight with a mesmerising catwalk show which featured only black models.
Popstar Lady Gaga, dressed in one of her trademark veils, opened the stunning show at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
Alek Wek and Jourdan Dunn were among the models who took to the catwalk during the runway show which showcased Treacy's Spring / Summer 2013 collection.

Minnie Mouse style ears sequinned helmets and dramatic fascinators featuring mini-fairgrounds made up some of the outlandish headgear on display for the audience, which included Dita Von Teese, Kelly Brook and Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall.
Late singer Michael Jackson was featured heavily in the production and the models wore some of the star's most iconic outfits, including the red leather jacket he wore in the video for Thriller.
Jackson's music made up the soundtrack and some of his biggest hits were blared across the venue, including Will You Be There, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' and Billie Jean.

Dunn, 22, tweeted her excitement about the show shortly before she took to the runway.
'So the genius that is Philip Treacey just had an all BLACK model Cast, wearing MICHAEL JACKSON ORIGINAL STAGE/VIDEO outfits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' she wrote.

The British-born model has previously admitted that she experienced prejudice while starting out in the fashion industry.

'There are loads of new black faces on the runways, which is a great thing,' she said in a recent interview with The Guardian.
'When I started out, it was different. I did experience some issues with the colour of my skin – I used to get a list of castings and there would be notes saying they just wanted blondes. '

She also revealed that while travelling to a casting, her agent had called her and said, 'Turn back – they decided they don't want any black models.'
Treacy has not commented on his decision to use only black models, but the unusual move is considered to be a positive step by fashion industry experts.
Premier Model Management spokesperson Alex Shah has welcomed the decision.
'I think it's a step in the right direction but many photographers and make-up artists still don't know how to work with black skin,' she told the Sunday Times.

'The black supermodels of the 1980s like Naomi Campbell and Iman have certainly made it a lot easier for the new generation but it is still harder to book black models.
'They will be used in spring/summer shows, when there is a tribal theme, but it is much harder in autumn/winter.' (dafuq - OP)
The groundbreaking event, the Irish hat designer's first London show in ten years, was dedicated to Treacy's former muse Isabella Blow, who committed suicide in 2007, and Michael Jackson.
The absence of black models on fashion magazines covers and the runway is an issue which has provoked much debate over the years.
In 2008, Italian Vogue famously featured only black models in its July issue to highlight the subject.
The pictures were taken by New-York based photographer Steven Meisel.
'I thought, it's ridiculous, this discrimination. It's so crazy to live in such a narrow, narrow place. Age, weight, sexuality, race - every kind of prejudice,' he told the New York Times.
Meisel blamed designers, magazine editors and advertisers for the decline in the numbers of black women in fashion shows.
The magazine published a second all-black editorial in 2011.

I love the imitation of the pants MJ wore in Bad, with the lone red stripe on the left leg.

don't know?...more like they don't bother trying

Yeah, brown/black/dark people are always associated with animal print. It's pretty gross
threeatatimejay 17th-Sep-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
This shit is why I had a phobia of wearing animal print for the longest time. :/
babyyouloveit 17th-Sep-2012 08:40 pm (UTC)
And those awful "tribal" photoshoots.
kurtvonnegut 17th-Sep-2012 05:44 pm (UTC)
i guess employing POC makeup artists is too hard
saltireflower 17th-Sep-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
I definitely think they don't bother, which I don't get. If a model looks terrible, won't that just make the makeup artist look incompetent?
heyignatzmouse 17th-Sep-2012 05:50 pm (UTC)
she posted a tweet recently wondering if her edges would survive fashion week.
it's no wonder naomi's hairline looks the way it does! and really pathetic that not much has changed since her heyday.
are there no black hairstylists they could use if the (presumably) white ones don't know what to do with black hair??
carbons 17th-Sep-2012 05:56 pm (UTC)
ugh these bullshit excuses. pat mcgrath is a fantastic makeup artist and she's a black women.

The Tyson Becford story makes me laugh everytime.
black_swan87 17th-Sep-2012 05:16 pm (UTC)
Call me a cynic but i think magazines only do all black model issues so tbey can get away with only using white models for the other 11 issues of the year.
ponpiri 17th-Sep-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
That's not being a cynic, that's being real. Same thing goes for Vogue embracing "real" women like Kate Upton. Someone out there has good intentions, but the majority of them don't want people breathing fire down their backs.
expromqueen 17th-Sep-2012 05:26 pm (UTC)
that's why america has black history month
rewrittentime 17th-Sep-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
no you're right.
_marquis 17th-Sep-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
My first thought as well.

And the "black issue" isn't even once a year... It was in 2008 and 2011. :/
kurtvonnegut 17th-Sep-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
yep

"look how progressive and charitable we are, giving these black models work"
eccentricvibe 17th-Sep-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
They do and it's annoying.
winegums 17th-Sep-2012 07:39 pm (UTC)
ita

Let's get the black girl quota done with in one month and toot our horns about being progressive, but the minute it's time for some woodland fairy or goth bullshit, pull out yet another skinny white girl!
ohsofierce_x3 17th-Sep-2012 05:18 pm (UTC)
She is stunning and when Prince Harry and I get married, my outrageous hats and fascinators will be made exclusively by Phillip Treacy

i love her so much. :')))
shangman 17th-Sep-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
I just watched the show and tbh the models made it so much better. It's refreshing. It shouldn't be, it should be a normal thing to do. I wish people would have more than the one token black and asian woman. So sick of the basic white girls that walk down every runway. I know that models are walking mannequins essentially, but damn they take that concept a bit too far.
kurtvonnegut 17th-Sep-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
i think the whole walking mannequin thing isn't even true anyways. people like to say that when you criticize the types of models who are on the runway. but you have people whose hobbies are stanning models. it's trendy to know the names of high fashion models and be knowledgeable about their careers. you constantly have people fighting over who's a supermodel and who isn't etc
shangman 17th-Sep-2012 05:54 pm (UTC)
I think it's more that most of the time they look like mannequins. Designers go for the same look (white, blonde, slightly grungy hair and bare makeup, no facial expression) that it becomes this default boring thing to do. There are probably 50-100 models who are well known (as in not just people on obscure forums talking about them), but so many are completely.. nothing. Here today, gone tomorrow and nobody really cares. IA that models shouldn't be that though, I'd rather have an army of supermodels who had more obvious personalities and looks.
