Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat has promised that much-loved companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams will get a "fitting end" in their final episode.
The pair, who are played by Karen Gillan and Arhur Darvill and have been traveling on-and-off with Matt Smith's Doctor since the actor took on the role of the Time Lord in 2010, will bow out of the series in the mid-series finale episode 'The Angels Take Manhattan'.
Speaking to Digital Spy about their exit, head writer Moffat said: "All stories have to end and, painful though that is, the most important thing about a story is how it finished. I had over a year's warning to get this sorted out, and I'm very proud of what we’ve done. A fitting end to the mighty era of the Ponds!"
Discussing the episode itself, which will feature the villainous Weeping Angels, he added: "There was something about the Weeping Angels and New York that just seemed to make sense to me. And I thought of the story for this episode while in New York.
"It's always good to find a new form for [the Angels] and we've got little cherubs this time," he continued. "I had loads of ideas for the Weeping Angels on both the previous stories that I never got anywhere close to using, so it was good to find the opportunity."
A new companion for the Doctor, played by former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, will be introduced in this year’s Christmas special. Season seven of Doctor Who premiered earlier this month (September 1), with 6.4 million viewers tuning in to watch the first episode.

Why are the Ponds still here?
Why didn't they leave after "The God Complex"?
What is the point of them?
I still think they should've left after "The God Complex" and I know Moffat will prove me wrong, but I'd rather stick to this headcanon.
Part of me sees that as true, and the other part of me thinks Moffat would never let that happen to his precious Ponds.
Literally what I came here to comment.

wut?
also hope the fitting end is River being deaged into a baby so the ponds can raise her.
The first appearance of river in series 5 was her getting out of jail for helping them.
every meeting after that was before amy first met her. so she was still in jail.
when Amy and River are talking at the end of series 6, River had JUST left series 5 amy as you see her in the outfit she was in in her last appearance in the episode where she gets paroled.
i think river going back to a baby after all we know would be really weird tho
also, what friends? we never saw anything about ~~Pond Life~~, they never mention anyone (except Mels that one time) from their ~Earth lives.
One thing that has bugged me with them is that as characters, neither Amy or Rory exist outside of the Doctor.
I think they should have left a while ago but I do like that they're finally acknowledging the fact that they have lives outside of the Doctor, about damn time even though it's about two seasons too late.
I'm not sure how that theory works because they eventually have to get to the point in The Hungry Earth where they wave at their younger selves..
Didn't Amy said last ep how she is always waiting to hear the sound of the TARDIS? I mean, they are acknowledging their lives outside of the Doctor but she still puts everything on hold and keeps waiting for him.
CSB
i don't know what the fuck moffat is doing here but i hate amy sfm and the doctor needs to fuck off now
