Mandy Patinkin calls Criminal Minds "biggest public mistake I ever made".

The actor - who currently appears in Showtime's Homeland - told New York Magazine that joining the violent CBS drama in 2005 was the "biggest public mistake I ever made".

"I thought [the show] was something very different," said Patinkin, who left Criminal Minds after two seasons in 2007. "I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year.

"It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."

However, the 59-year-old Princess Bride star defended the violence in his current show Homeland, on which he plays CIA operative Saul.

"I'm not making a judgment on the taste [of people who watch crime procedurals]," he insisted. "But I'm concerned about the effect it has. Audiences all over the world use this programming as their bedtime story. This isn't what you need to be dreaming about.

"A show like Homeland is the antidote. It asks why there's a need for violence in the first place."

Criminal Minds enters its eighth season on September 26, on CBS in the US. The series airs on Sky Living in the UK.

Yes the show's concept is to explore the motives behind different types of criminals and psychos, but they could do that without graphically showing the horrible crimes. It sounds like he didn't realize how graphic it would be.

That's why I have a hard time with this show. I think it's fascinating but they take the violence too far for me sometimes.

Oh, definitely! I've had moments where I'm extremely uncomfortable and paranoid afterwards.

ita. It started out okay and now in the later seasons you spend 3/4 of the show seeing people (women) cowering in fear as they get tortured. wow nty

Agreed, I LOVE the team, but I had to stop watching it because the violence was over the top and gave me nightmares. =\

Yeah, my sisters are both fans of the show and any episode I've ever seen of it has been good, but I just don't like my television that dark so I don't think I'll ever sit down and marathon it or anything.

I had to stop watching. I love the show but it's just too much for me personally. I wish they had an edited version tbh.... Too many triggers.
