The actor - who currently appears in Showtime's Homeland - told New York Magazine that joining the violent CBS drama in 2005 was the "biggest public mistake I ever made".
"I thought [the show] was something very different," said Patinkin, who left Criminal Minds after two seasons in 2007. "I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year.
"It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."
However, the 59-year-old Princess Bride star defended the violence in his current show Homeland, on which he plays CIA operative Saul.
"I'm not making a judgment on the taste [of people who watch crime procedurals]," he insisted. "But I'm concerned about the effect it has. Audiences all over the world use this programming as their bedtime story. This isn't what you need to be dreaming about.
"A show like Homeland is the antidote. It asks why there's a need for violence in the first place."
Criminal Minds enters its eighth season on September 26, on CBS in the US. The series airs on Sky Living in the UK.

So glad he's gone and Joe's on the show now. I hated Gideon and I vastly prefer Rossi.
When I worked at Showtime David Duchovny made many changes to the show before the signed. One of them being the title of the show. I forget what it was called before but he made them change that and other elements.
Mandy was the star of the series so he knew well in advance what this series would be about. He's just a well known asshole that's incredibly difficult to work with. I'm really surprised he's able to find work. I think he's playing his cools with Showtime though.
That's why I have a hard time with this show. I think it's fascinating but they take the violence too far for me sometimes.

lol, at them playing out his disappearance on the show.
I loved that she was a mess. I hate crime dramas where the leading lady's hair looks like it has been steam rolled and pin curled into perfection.
I loved that episode! Another great episode was the one that was sort of inspired by the Columbine high school massacre.
Well, except the assholes. But fuck them.

♥ Mason and Roxy
HOLY SHIT INIGO WHATS UP BABY
what were you expecting?
I can enjoy some police procedurals like the Inspector Banks books because the crime is mentioned but it's not lovingly detailed, you know? The entertainment is in the mystery, not the sadism.
Not to mention my sister watches it constantly so I hate it by default for that reason.
that's why I stan nikita tbh
also i fucking love criminal minds- the characters have my dream job.
