Jay-Z Shelves Cristal At 40/40 Club, Urges Boycott.

Industry rap giant Jay-Z has joined the ranks of those boycotting high end champagne company Cristal, in response to the negative comments made by Frederic Rouzaud, managing director of Louis Roederer Cristal.

In a special summer edition of The Economist magazine, Rouzaud commented on the Hip-Hop community's patronage of the champagne brand in an article titled "Bubbles and Bling."

Rouzaud stated that he observed the rap community's constant patronage of the pricey drink with "curiosity and serenity."

Rouzaud further stated that other brands like Dom Perignon and Krug "would be delighted to have their business."

Jay-Z has announced that he will no longer support or distribute Cristal champagne at his 40/40 sports bar/restaurant.

"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'Hip-Hop' culture as 'unwelcome attention,'" said Jay-Z. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

Jay-Z, Sean "Diddy" Combs, and several of the Hip-Hop industry's biggest stars have supported Cristal through patronage and homage in rap lyrics.

Jay-Z and his popular 40/40 Club will now be serving only Krug and Dom Perignon to their customers seeking high end champagne products.

has anyone here ever had cristal? is it even good?
[info]bangbangusuck 15th-Jun-2006 04:15 am (UTC)
I like it a lot.
[info]deadsouls09 15th-Jun-2006 08:03 am (UTC)
Me too.
[info]martinisnmakeup 15th-Jun-2006 04:16 am (UTC)
It's okay. I'm not that big of a fan of champagne, so I'm not a good person to ask. You can tell the difference between that and say... a bottle of Korbel, but it's not something I would pay out the ass for.
[info]androganus 15th-Jun-2006 04:28 am (UTC)
Overrated.
[info]espressoshot 15th-Jun-2006 04:36 am (UTC)

Eeeeek. I second that and I rather have the whiskey.
Trust me. Like Jay-Z's 40/40 club in NYC. There is a much wider variety of options in the city that are quite frankly more enjoyable for your crew.

[info]chapstickqueen 15th-Jun-2006 10:18 am (UTC)
It doesn't matter if it's good. It's expensive, and that's what counts.
[info]hiphopdiary 15th-Jun-2006 12:51 pm (UTC)
i was given a bottle once. i really like chamapgne, butit wasn't anything fantastic, actually. i like veuve cliquot best.
[info]iterative_steps 15th-Jun-2006 01:52 pm (UTC)
i've had it, it's gross. it tasted like paper swished in beer. my favorite wine is actually less then 10 bucks. pricey doesn't always =yummy

So saying towards rappers, who are mostly black that by talking about Cristal in their songs is getting the Cristal company UNWANTED ATTENTION -- how can that not be racist?
[info]bangbangusuck 15th-Jun-2006 04:20 am (UTC)
Rappers can be very ignorant, a lot of people in the music industry can be. However, to me rappers always take away class in designer things. Look at Vuitton or Dior, they cheese it up and make it look cheap.
[info]tamburlaine 15th-Jun-2006 04:24 am (UTC)
It's not because they're black, per se, it's because the individuals themselves are "unclassy" and associating Cristal with images of champagne-soaked strippers, etc. I don't think the comment was racist as much as it was offensive to the chosen lifestyle of the rap community. That most rappers are black should be seen as circumstantial, but not the cause for the comment.
[info]lisbonlovesjacq 15th-Jun-2006 02:13 pm (UTC)
It just happens to be black rappers who are advertising their beverage in a way they don't want it advertised. I'm sure you'll say it's untrue, but I think they would feel the exact same way if it was a little trashy white girl doing the "free advertising", a la Paris Hilton, etc. No one would accuse Cristal of being anti-woman or something if they didn't want drunken ladywhores advertising their product.
[info]ourloveisreal 15th-Jun-2006 04:19 am (UTC)
haha wow. youre insane
[info]maryam 15th-Jun-2006 04:20 am (UTC)
It's not saying it outright, but I can see it.

He might have also had another reason for saying what he did about hip hop, but nothing's mentioned in the article and that's the most obvious answer to me.

But then again, what if Cristal became the choice drink of goth rockers? Would he see that as negative attention too?
[info]numb_kisses 15th-Jun-2006 04:15 am (UTC)
everything is rascist nowadays.
[info]lovewasted 15th-Jun-2006 04:15 am (UTC)
GOOD, more people need to do this.
[info]ashbyyokosuka1 15th-Jun-2006 05:16 am (UTC)
who is in your icon?
she is gorgeous (i want to say rosario--if that is her, the best i've EVER seen her!)
[info]lovewasted 15th-Jun-2006 05:27 am (UTC)
You're right!
[info]martinisnmakeup 15th-Jun-2006 04:17 am (UTC)
I'm usually one to be wary of people playing the race card, but that comment is rather offensive. Just my humble opinion, though.
[info]keskt 15th-Jun-2006 04:19 am (UTC)
I agree. I mean even if it's not racist, it's offensive to those who ARE in the hip hop community and it's perfectly reasonable that they'd stop consuming it after that. It was such a stupid comment to make.
[info]cdsdralion 15th-Jun-2006 04:19 am (UTC)
I do think this was a bit racist, usually I am not one to pull the race card, but I think it's justifiably used here.
[info]bluesforgotten 15th-Jun-2006 04:22 am (UTC)
hmm. its amazing to me that they aren't stopping buying it because of the insane price, but rather because of some petty argument.

these people need to put things into perspective.
[info]childproof 15th-Jun-2006 04:23 am (UTC)
price isn't really a big deal when you have that much money.
[info]bluesforgotten 15th-Jun-2006 04:34 am (UTC)
yeah, but a lot of them talk about how they had a bad childhood or whatever and one would think they would be a little more...aware of the price of things
[info]oh_really_now 15th-Jun-2006 04:49 am (UTC)
So why not have fun with their wealth? The hip-hop community's biggest stars are quite charitable. I don't get what you are trying to say. Because they grew up impoverished, they shouldn't enjoy their wealth?
[info]hantastic 15th-Jun-2006 04:22 am (UTC)
i love how jay-z automatically calls the guy's comments racist. maybe the guy feels that the lifestyle that's associated with hip-hop is what's bringing the company "unwanted attention." but nooooooooo...it's obviously 'cause the guy's a bigot. OBVIOUSLY.
[info]hantastic 15th-Jun-2006 04:23 am (UTC)
to me, it'd make more sense to stop drinking the champagne because the guy insulted the hip-hop community, not because he's "racist."
[info]mad_turtle 15th-Jun-2006 01:18 pm (UTC)
Exactly. I don't find anything racist in his comments. However, I do feel he insulted the hip hop community and as such, if people want to boycott him, more power to him.

You don't insult your customers.
[info]sensuallyme 15th-Jun-2006 04:26 am (UTC)
but there is no maybe here, the guys specifically stated his intentions.
[info]mad_boi_dave 15th-Jun-2006 04:37 am (UTC)
Probably just played the race card because it was an easy way of bringing infamy back onto him. Nothing he said was explicitly racist. Jay-Z inferred racism out of essentially nothing.
[info]jacktripper 15th-Jun-2006 03:07 pm (UTC)
He's French and he grouped a whole culture of music together so he probably = racist haha. He probably doesn't want Americans drinking it either.
[info]croutonochrist 15th-Jun-2006 04:23 am (UTC)
I don't really think his comments were racist, but he certainly proved himself to be quite a dick. So I support the protest. Down with Cristal, bitches.
[info]ex_nature304 15th-Jun-2006 04:24 am (UTC)
good
[info]pistolasypesos 15th-Jun-2006 04:40 am (UTC)

[info]gloriousmcfly 15th-Jun-2006 04:25 am (UTC)
not much of a fan of champagne, but cristal has always been good to me.
(especially when it's paid for by a wealthy family friend)
[info]a_raven_rogue 15th-Jun-2006 04:26 am (UTC)
jealous.
[info]a_raven_rogue 15th-Jun-2006 04:25 am (UTC)
Hmm, I don't know. A very tactless comment, yes, but I wouldn't say 'racist'.
[info]thenixhex 15th-Jun-2006 03:38 pm (UTC)
I don't see where the comments were either tactless or racist. They sounded like observations to me.

[info]protoaxl 16th-Jun-2006 02:19 am (UTC)
What would have been a nicer way to be honest?

I think the truth hurts, and something like that couldn't have been told without being offensive to the people in question, who already think they are the shit.
[info]tamburlaine 15th-Jun-2006 04:26 am (UTC)
In the great words of Kel, "AW, HERE IT GOES!"
[info]spaceship 15th-Jun-2006 04:28 am (UTC)
HAHAHAHA.

Back when Nickelodeon was good.
[info]ellinorianne 15th-Jun-2006 04:27 am (UTC)
Who tells people to buy their competitor? What kind of business model is that?

[info]0405 Re: Team Rouzaud15th-Jun-2006 04:30 am (UTC)
They are buying their products and getting the word out in songs about their products. They are making them I'm sure a shitload of money. Who cares who is buying your products as long as the dough comes in!!
[info]antimonkeytrust Re: Team Rouzaud15th-Jun-2006 04:35 am (UTC)
i moved my comment... businesses that have a certain reputation and don't need the unsolicated advertisement care.
