Leighton Meester channels bb Julianne Moore on October 2012's Cosmopolitan UK

Leighton Meester shows off her back on the cover of British Cosmopolitan‘s October 2012 issue, on newsstands and available as a digital edition September 13. Here is what the 26-year-old Gossip Girl actress had to share with the mag:

On not wearing makeup: “I don’t care if there are a million pictures of me with no makeup. I love being able to walk down the street without it. We should promote women not having to wear makeup, or at least feel we can go out without it.”

On comparing her style to Blair Waldorf’s: “I’ve never seen Blair with the same bag, coat or shoes twice. I don’t know anyone who had that. I had two pairs of jeans [when I was a teenager] that I rotated. I wouldn’t trust myself with a Prada brag! I didn’t even want to change for gym so I’d wear sweatpants over my jeans, then sweat around the track for an hour.”

On being awkward around people: “If I’m not around close friends or family, I can get quiet and awkward, and it probably comes off as not very nice or just plain weird! It’s not meant to. I try to pull myself out of it but sometimes it’s hard for me to open up. In the past it was easier for me to trust people. Nowadays I judge pretty quickly: ‘You just want to be my friend because I’m on a TV show.’” This is true. When I got to meet her, we were surprised at how shy she was in person despite just opening her heart to us during a performance.

shes so pretty, i love her.

ugh seriously this is my life. I'm so shy and awkward that i come off as stuck up/bitchy/standoffish. I mean, i am standoffish, but im not stuck up. I just can't strike up a convo, people need to do it with me until i loosen up around them or i'll just stand there starring at the ground TBH.

sigh.
revertigo 10th-Sep-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
ugh i hate small talk
squishinator 11th-Sep-2012 12:03 am (UTC)
me toooooo omg. idk what to say to people if i dont know them well.
asdfjklkjhfds 11th-Sep-2012 12:10 am (UTC)
lol, me too. i started a new job recently and overheard a coworker commenting on how quiet i am yesterday, oop. i'm fine when people start talking to me first but idk i can't initiate small talk, it's weird.
lillylilacs 11th-Sep-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
Same, thank god for social situations with alcohol tbh. One drink and I feel a lot more relaxed to deal with small talk.
bestillmyxheart 11th-Sep-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
same here. people think I'm such a snob, but I'm just so damn shy. I envy people who can strike up a convo with anyone, but I also hate small talk so damn much. "it's getting cold outside" "yeah, that usually happens in fucking september!"

I'm like this half of the time, the other half I don't mind striking up a convo, it's all about my mood usually.
x_girl_wonder_x 11th-Sep-2012 12:31 am (UTC)
I am so glad I am not the only one like this.
I am so painfully shy and downright awkward. I am incapable of starting off a conversation. I'm literally the girl who's standing there with her arms crossed and eyes glaring at everyone who walks by. And inside I'm like come to meeee, talk with meeee, haha. But, unfortunately, I just come off as cold and standoffish. I've been told this too.

This is also why I have also pathetically never even been on date with a guy. Because when one comes close I go all She-Hulk and look like I'm about to smash his face in, when really, on the inside I'm like swooning.
But you'd never be able to tell, heh.

And small talk sucks.
I have no idea how to respond to small talk. I'm just like...oookaaay. Bye.
goofusgallant 11th-Sep-2012 01:07 am (UTC)
same.
dreamofcoffee 11th-Sep-2012 01:13 am (UTC)

Leighton is actually super nice though and doesn't come off like that at all, I once struck up a conversation with her on the sidewalk and she was really friendly and even recognized me when I ran into her almost a year later /csb
revertigo 10th-Sep-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)

revertigo 10th-Sep-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)

drypumpernickel 11th-Sep-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
SMH. I honestly can't believe people hated Leighton at one point on ONTD. Like, how could anyone hate her?

ztrellitaa 10th-Sep-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
I'd go around without makeup if I looked like her without it. She is stunning to me.
revertigo 10th-Sep-2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
i used to be proud of not wearing makeup, but these days i want to be good at it and fuck around with my face for a night.
winter_lace 11th-Sep-2012 12:29 am (UTC)
I'm trying to start not wearing makeup at least once a week. It's just that whenever I do, people always comment on how sick I look.

tadashee 11th-Sep-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
i only wear make up when i go out. so tfriday and saturday night. I cant wear it. i am trying to wear more sunscreen though. My mom always buys me lipstick. ugh

londonaster 11th-Sep-2012 05:51 am (UTC)

I can't be assed to do it as a ~prerequisite for going outside but if I'm bored I'll bust out the lipsticks and the contouring powder (i.e. brown eyeshadow lbr) and fuck around for an hour
genbu_no_miko24 11th-Sep-2012 12:00 am (UTC)
Not totally digging the hair on her, but I love her.

Love the cover

ia
sweet_honesty 11th-Sep-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
Yeah, she looks wo much better with dark hair.
omgitskatharine 11th-Sep-2012 12:03 am (UTC)
it's easy to say you love to go without makeup when you have skin as good as she does. try doing that when you've got moderately-severe cystic acne and then get back to me.
revertigo 11th-Sep-2012 12:09 am (UTC)
aw... my skin used to be so bad then it just got better. i'd get inflamed acne -- the ones underneath the skin -- if i don't take care of it though.
hippie_chick 11th-Sep-2012 12:04 am (UTC)
She only wishes she were Julianne Moore. Pretty but not unlike a slew of other starlets in Hollywood.
revertigo 11th-Sep-2012 12:08 am (UTC)
She only wishes she were Julianne Moore

who doesn't
hippie_chick 11th-Sep-2012 12:08 am (UTC)
I know, right?
clarelove 11th-Sep-2012 12:11 am (UTC)
I hate the implication that makeup is some sort of frivolous thing that women don't really need, or do. From What Makes You Beautiful to this song, it just keep being implied that makeup is some sort of crutch when, if men were the target market for and main users of it, it just wouldn't be as taboo, nor would it be as ridiculed. I don't know. Weird thing to pick at, I'm sure, but it always bothers me how makeup is always talked something that is a thing of need. "If you don't need it, don't wear it!" It's, like, no? It's just like a hobby, or choice. It's not so important to a woman's life that its use always needs to be discussed. I don't know. I'm rambling.
makahakat 11th-Sep-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
ia. i dont "need" makeup, but i love wearing it because i think its fun. i always side-eye the movement saying that i should stop doing something i like just...because.
genbu_no_miko24 11th-Sep-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
IA. I hate the whole anti-makeup talk. I don't do it for attention or because I want guys all over me.

I like wearing it for myself.
revertigo 11th-Sep-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
women get shamed either way and it's sad. leighton loves her makeup so i think she means shit like this:

judgmental 11th-Sep-2012 12:33 am (UTC)
and they ofc put the worst pics
kurtvonnegut 11th-Sep-2012 12:16 am (UTC)
she was clearly referring to the fact that when women in hollywood aren't made up to the T they get shit.
xtinkerbellax 11th-Sep-2012 12:27 am (UTC)
IA, a lot of people wear it because they love makeup, but there are definitely also people who don't want anyone to see them without it because they think they look "bad", like the girls who run to the bathroom to put makeup on before the guy they are sleeping with wakes up.
h0tfuss 11th-Sep-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
"What Makes You Beautiful" is part of a whole sub-genre of songs that measure girls' value only in terms of when men recognize it. It's both sweet and controlling in a weird way.
__papillon 11th-Sep-2012 12:37 am (UTC)
i don't take men seriously when they say "you don't need makeup! you can just go natural!" because then they'll say in the same breath that their ideal for natural beauty is kim k and megan fox lol, they don't really know what they're talking about. they prob only think makeup is cakey foundation, bright blue eyeshadow, bright pink cheeks and red lips
candycheeks 11th-Sep-2012 12:11 am (UTC)
so pretty!
makahakat 11th-Sep-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
i was with her til this:

I didn’t even want to change for gym so I’d wear sweatpants over my jeans, then sweat around the track for an hour.”
kurtvonnegut 11th-Sep-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
i only wear lipstick every day, like i'm not into makeup really, i have great skin and i'm already hot n everything but i am obsessed with wearing lipstick idk
daddyissues 11th-Sep-2012 12:34 am (UTC)
~lucky for some
winegums 11th-Sep-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
ia, bare-faced+bright red lipstick = best look EVER.

otoh, I can't pull that with purple lipstick, that shit makes most people's skin look like it has flaws when it doesn't.
