'Deus Ex' Developer Fired Over Murder Comments

Blake Marsh spent four years working for Eidos Montreal, the team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution. He was fired this week. Not for anything he did while on the job, but for stuff he said on Facebook.

As the latest reminder that anyone with a full-time job had best watch what they say on a social network, Marsh awoke on Wednesday morning to find that he'd been terminated for comments he'd made regarding a murder that took place over Quebec's recent election results.

On Tuesday night, only minutes after two people were shot - one fatally - at a political rally celebrating her victory, Marsh took to Facebook and began a wall post by saying "You just can't find good assassins these days."

A little distasteful, perhaps, but it's what he says next that got him into trouble.

Talking about the election's winner, controversial left-wing politician Pauline Marois, he wrote "I give this b***h a month before someone with better aim comes forth and does what must be done."

That got the police's attention, and they paid a visit to Eidos Montreal's studio on Wednesday morning. At the same time, Eidos general manager Stéphane D'Astous had arrived at the office to find numerous complaints about Marsh's behaviour. Which he swiftly acted upon.

"Because of the nature of his posting . . . I decided to terminate his position at our company," D'Astous told Global Edmonton. "He crossed the line very clearly."

"We were indirectly linked to this which was totally unacceptable . . . we have an internal policy of zero tolerance of any type of intimidation or aggression in any shape or form."

Lt. Guy Lapointe of the Sûreté du Québec (the cops) told the site that, because such threats were taken very seriously, an investigation into Marsh's comments "is still ongoing".

As harmless as the comments appear to be, and as "personal" as they may have been intended, like I said above, it's something you've got to be very careful of in today's world. Especially when it's a publicly-accessible page that clearly states you work for a company with a public fanbase like Eidos.

Someone fucking died during that assassination attempt, he should not be joking about it. Got what he deserved.

I don't want to go back to Quebec. I'm a nervous Anglophone -_-

I know plenty of Anglophones that live in Quebec and love it though, especially in downtown Montreal and in the Montreal suburbs. I know a lot in the Quebec city area too.
grammaire 7th-Sep-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I've lived in Montreal for two years, and I do love it (mostly). I'm just worried that having a separatist government will make SOME people more hostile to Anglophones than they already are.
na_utical 7th-Sep-2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
I just moved out of there only for university, but three of my family friends are selling their homes, not really to 'escape' but because there will be some real estate damage in the long run. Montreal is relatively good, but once you're ten miles out it's a bit freaky.
noiresoul 7th-Sep-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
I think it will continue to be fine in Montreal, it's the really rural areas of Quebec that tend to be the most racist, and only respect people if they're 'pure laine'.
milly 7th-Sep-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
Absolutely disgusting. I'm not a fan of Marois (and I don't know if I would qualify the PQ as left-wing, because their platform is all over the place and obscured by the independence issue), but that is just fucking disgusting to say about anyone ever, especially considering someone died and another was injured.

I'm glad he was fired. And free speech laws are different in Canada, so I hope something more comes out of it.

Their stance towards protecting minority rights and celebrating diversity is anything but leftist
milly 7th-Sep-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
IA. I mean... they do have some stances that you could qualify as leftist, but overall it's a clusterfuck of left-wing and right-wing stances that make a nonsensical whole, which is a pretty good description of the party itself too.

Good call on firing his ass.

eidos montreal does not mess around apparently
jeuxdemaux 7th-Sep-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
What a fucking douchebag. I really hate Jean Charest but I never ever wished for him to die.
noiresoul 7th-Sep-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
I hate Marois and her racist ass campaign but encouraging her assassination is too much. Any mention of violence is too much.
l_ecumedesjours 7th-Sep-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
I was so disgusted by the number of comments like these that swam around FB all of this week. PQ is a minority government, they will not kill all anglo rights. Calm the fuck down.

Exactly. Also, the fact that French-speaking people want to celebrate their culture doesn't actually mean they want to eradicate English culture. Sure, there are some crazy sovereignists who probably wish anyone not French-speaking was gone from Quebec, but it's definitely not the majority of people. Most Quebecers make the cohabitation of 2 cultures work. (FWIW, I'm a French-speaking Quebecer, but I have been living elsewhere in Canada for many years now)
milly 7th-Sep-2012 10:19 pm (UTC)
French-speaking Quebecer too, hola! I live in Alabama now though O_o

Where do you come from? (I'm from Quebec city and my family still lives there)

ETA: ... Je viens juste de me rendre compte que ça fait un peu con de t'avoir dit ça en anglais, mais bon...

I still love Deus Ex so much tho
fauxparadiso 7th-Sep-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
Dude can go fuck himself. I don't cry easily but I was damn near tearing up seeing Gabby Giffords at the DNC. She's come so far with such a small chance of recovery.
myrasis 7th-Sep-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
title made me think it was a dev from the original Deus Ex game and I was really confused as to why that would be news, heh.
numbedtoe 7th-Sep-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
he deserved to get fired for that.

i loathed Bush but got pissed at people who'd say he should have been shot. it's in poor taste for a hundred reasons, instills fear in a democratic process and ffs people Darth Cheney would have been president.
evil_mom 7th-Sep-2012 10:16 pm (UTC)
what a douchey thing to say, someone died you moron
beemo 7th-Sep-2012 10:17 pm (UTC)
fucking awesome. on the police's part, i mean.

i'm an anglo in montreal and the world is not ending... i'm pleased with the election result actually. none of the parties can act on all the stupid shit they wanted to do.
