Young Adult Books on the Big Screen Cont'd

David Slade to Direct Young Adult Story ‘Matched’ for Disney

Are you tired of movies based on young adult novels about dystopian futures? No? Good — because Disney has just hired director David Slade to tackle ‘Matched,’ based on the YA novel by Ally Condie, and surprise! It’s about a dystopian future society!

According to Deadline, the House of Mouse has just signed David Slade to direct ‘Matched,’ based on the young adult fiction novel by Ally Condie. The story takes place in a dystopian future society, which is apparently the only kind of society suitable for tweens (accurate). Cassia Reyes lives in a world where algorithms are used to determine who its citizens will marry when they turn 17, so it’s sort of like if eHarmony were given the power of legislation.

The matches show up on items called “microcards,” but Cassia has two matches on hers — scandal! And one of them is what her society deems an “aberration” — double scandal! Cassia starts spending time with both of her suitors, Ky and Xander, and tries to figure out the man with whom she’s truly meant to be.

‘Matched’ bears all the hallmarks of modern young adult fiction: dystopian future society with limited choice (also known as “Mitt Romney’s Happy Place”), science-fiction elements, and most importantly, love. You know, all that stuff kids really care about these days. Noticeably absent: Taylor Swift and Facebook.

Slade is best known for directing ‘Hard Candy,’ ’30 Days of Night,’ and ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.’

WB Snags Impending Sci-Fi Young Adult Novel 'The Planet Thieves'

The pursuit of the next Hunger Games franchise at the movie studios continues and Warner Bros. has a new property they'll be trying to turn into a hit blockbuster film. Deadline has word that the studio has snagged the rights to The Planet Thieves, a forthcoming young adult novel by False Memory author Dan Krokos.

The book, hitting shelves next May, follows Mason Stark, a 13-year old cadet in the Earth Space Command who must lead his fellow cadets in a daring surprise attack to retake the SS Egypt from a deadly alien race who has killed the entire crew, and recover a stolen technology that could spell the end of planet Earth.

Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman and his Heyday Films banner will produce the adaptation that sounds like a great sci-fi adventure. Much like Ender's Game, this will also be a great role for a young actor looking for a breakthrough performance. Since Asa Butterfield (Hugo) already has the aforementioned sci-fi adaptation locked down, maybe Kodi-Smit McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman) could lead this project? It's hard to say whether the film will land a solid audience since the book doesn't hit until next year, but the studio will likely wait to see how the book sells before moving forward. Interested?

whutness 6th-Sep-2012 01:02 am (UTC)
Hmmm I read Matched and it was pretty good. I don't know how I feel about it being a movie though.
melissa_ivory 6th-Sep-2012 03:19 am (UTC)
I'm still going to read it before the film is made, because it just looked interesting to me. Hope they don't make a mess of it though.
avalola 6th-Sep-2012 01:02 am (UTC)
yay i'm actually here for this! just finished "dare me" after hearing it compared to Gone Girl and was sooo disappointed. i kept waiting for a twist and explanation for some of the loose ends that never came.
snowtears4 6th-Sep-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
I AGREE

i was interested in everything that was happening but when it ended i was like "wait, what is going to happen to...EVERYONE?!?!?!"

questions
what was sarge so depressed about? am i to believe it was just getting to second base with beth? what happened to the cheerleader that jumped off the cliff last year? i kept thinking beth was involved and it had to do with jealousy from that summer. what did the fucking coach even look like? i have a good imagination but they didn't describe her once. what the fuck was she all about? no idea. it was really just the husband, so obvious, why did he tip whatshername off about the photo he received and what was so dark about him that the sarge said you didn't know what he was really like? ugh so many questions so little care. gillian does mystery so much better. SO was AMAZING!
vampireweekend 6th-Sep-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
omg the princess in ur icon im blinded by her beauty
tankmachine 6th-Sep-2012 01:02 am (UTC)
the whole dystopian craze in YA is such a reflection of millennial exceptionalism where everybody in my generation is so convinced that ours is the worst e v e r

lmao
adlanth 6th-Sep-2012 01:45 am (UTC)
Then they might as well put some topical satire in it... That particular premise just sounds like some way of taking tired old tropes (arranged marriage, oh noez! love triangle!) and giving it a vaguely SF veneer (microcards and algorithms and stuff!)
finchroxxx 6th-Sep-2012 02:25 am (UTC)
Yeah there is no social commentary or anything. Cassia spends 90% of the book swooning over one of her matches, and reading poetry. No joke, most of the book. Then there is "plot" at the very very end of the book that is really sloppy. I didn't bother with the sequel tbh.
_scarlett_icons 6th-Sep-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
One day a book I write will be adapted into a film.

It will happen.

miuratenshi 6th-Sep-2012 01:05 am (UTC)
MTE.
shining_starsxx 6th-Sep-2012 01:09 am (UTC)
It's fun to think about.
slipsandtumbles 6th-Sep-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
why not just write a screenplay
_scarlett_icons 6th-Sep-2012 01:12 am (UTC)
the chances of writing some cheesy YA and having it adapted is better than writing a screenplay and having someone pick it up. how sad is that?

fifthmorn 6th-Sep-2012 10:16 am (UTC)
MTE. I could probably just take one of the Dragonball Z fanfics I wrote when I was 11 and change the names to Damien and Cassandra and there you go. I could finally pay back my student loans.
marinade 6th-Sep-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
It's not important but he looks like a Bruce Willis after the expiration date.
_scarlett_icons 6th-Sep-2012 01:06 am (UTC)

I was trying to find the right words to describe him, but you did it for me.
misslevengood 6th-Sep-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
I actually really like this series.
ellaellaeheheh 6th-Sep-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
Matched is so awful I couldn't even finish. its still here on my bookshelf looking at me.
melissa_ivory 6th-Sep-2012 03:21 am (UTC)
No where to get rid of it, like Half-price Books or something?
ellaellaeheheh 6th-Sep-2012 03:29 am (UTC)
I'll probably just give to a library somewhere
fauxparadiso 6th-Sep-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
Goddamn I didn't think it was possible to run a "1 girl, 2 guys to choose from" trope into the ground, but the 2000's are sure reachin' to make it happen.
underdog_ontop 6th-Sep-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
"Cassia Reyes" yay latinas exist in the future! imagine if mitt romney being elected actually triggers a dystopian future....
piratesswoop 6th-Sep-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
you can bet the girl they cast will be a blonde white girl though

and i know latinas can be white but
underdog_ontop 6th-Sep-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
yeah i mean i have no hope but at least she's reyes lol.
brit78 6th-Sep-2012 06:00 am (UTC)
She's described as having coppery/brown hair and green eyes. Not that she can't be Latina but my guess is she's white.
fifthmorn 6th-Sep-2012 10:18 am (UTC)
I think I remember her mentioning how pale she is, light strawberry blond hair, green eyes, cause she gets this green dress that goes perfectly and she looks like Cinderella or some shit.
r_a_black 7th-Sep-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
I was originally excited about this too, but her physical description squashed it down.
vivisexion 6th-Sep-2012 01:05 am (UTC)
The matches show up on items called “microcards,” but Cassia has two matches on hers — scandal!

ew, love triangles.
soavantgarde 6th-Sep-2012 01:05 am (UTC)
groce
angelmonster 6th-Sep-2012 01:05 am (UTC)
I have decided to write a ya book for some money.

Yaya Shellfire is a young girl who feels like an outsider til a billionaire alien comes to earth and sweeps her off her feat with his alien mind powers. All the while her best friend Hector Amazinglay has had feelings for her all this time, who will she chose? They all have sex.

That is the synopsis, give me your money! Aliens are the new bad sex novels that were fanfics.

chelledbrown 6th-Sep-2012 01:08 am (UTC)
Sounds amazing, take my money please! I see millions and of course movie deals in our future.

Assuming that Yaya is, of course, white and very pretty, but in such a way that she believes she isn't. Probably a brunette with brown eyes, to fit that 'mousy but secretly hottttt' mold.
angelmonster 6th-Sep-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
You got it, she hates how pale she is and she thinks she is ugly. When she takes off her glasses she is suddenly beautiful.
soavantgarde 6th-Sep-2012 01:09 am (UTC)
does yaya have an inner goddess tho?
_scarlett_icons 6th-Sep-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
Is she half angel/half demon? Because if so, then I already have the exact same plot for my future best seller, sorry. :/
mistyraven 6th-Sep-2012 01:14 am (UTC)
The words "alien probe" have to appear at least three times in each chapter.
lostinshalott 6th-Sep-2012 01:37 am (UTC)
I would buy it
unbridledglee 6th-Sep-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
Only if the aliens have tentacles will this be good imo
toshi_hakari 6th-Sep-2012 08:23 am (UTC)
Jokes aside, if you wrote that as a YA parody book... I can totally see it working and I'd buy it.

You should do it :|
welurklate 6th-Sep-2012 01:06 am (UTC)
Matched was so boring, didn't finish it.
lisal825 6th-Sep-2012 01:07 am (UTC)
"Matched" = "Meh."
