Melanie Griffith on guest starring on Raising Hope with her mom + Tippi Hedren interview

The FOX hit show brings out the big guns for the season three premiere! Get a peek of Melanie on set with her mom, "The Birds" star Tippi Hedren.

Hedren Headlines at California Women's Conference:

Tippi Hedren Reveals “Evil, Deviant” Hitchcock’s On-Set Sexual Harassment

Alfred Hitchcock has long been accused of putting his "cool blondes" through the ringer on movie sets; as a kid, I remember my mom telling me that Tippi Hedren had a real-life nervous breakdown on the set of The Birds after she filmed the famous attack scene, during which actual birds were hurled at her face for hours. But, as it turns out, the traumatic on-set incidents were the symptom, not the cause.

HBO's upcoming movie The Girl divulges the full range of abuse that Hitchcock put Hedren through on the set of The Birds and Marnie, which escalated to full-on blackmail: when she refused his sexual advances on-set, he guaranteed that she would never work again by holding her to a contract with him. Because of the studio system of the time, contract players were bound to their directors, and it effectively ruined her career. Hedren, now 82, spoke at a panel discussion for The Girl, starring Sienna Miller and Toby Jones and based on a book about Hitchcock and herself entitled Spellbound by Beauty.

Hedren said at the panel discussion:

I think he was an extremely sad character. We are dealing with a brain here that was an unusual genius, and evil, and deviant, almost to the point of dangerous, because of the effect that he could have on people that were totally unsuspecting

She added that if this occurred in today's Hollywood, she would be "a very rich woman," and Sienna Miller confirmed that shit would never fly between an actress and a director now. (Mind you, just a few days ago, Russell Brand harassed a wardrobe girl to show him her tits. Yes, different situation, but still, worth noting in this context.)

Even Hedren's daughter Melanie Griffith (who appeared in The Birds as a child) had been unaware of what her mother had gone through, and, upon rewatching it, "jumped up and said, 'Now I have to go back into therapy," recalls Hedren. Finally, she says that she survived it beautifully. "He ruined my career," she said, "but not my life."

When is Raising Hope back?
therealycats 5th-Sep-2012 02:50 am (UTC)
Ummmm...either late this month or early next. I don't remember the exact date but if you have OnDemand go watch one of the new shows (The Mind Project or Ben & Kate) and there's a promo on there for it.

I always feel bad hearing what Hitchcock put poor Tippi Hedren through.

Sienna Miller confirmed that shit would never fly between an actress and a director now.

I don't for a second believe that actresses aren't still sexually harassed by directors/producers today. :(
sassandthecity 5th-Sep-2012 01:24 am (UTC)
Yeah, I don't know how somebody could say that in a world that contains Michael Bay.
josiefier 5th-Sep-2012 01:47 am (UTC)
Hell, think about the Nick stars if the rumors are true. And like the other commenter mentioned, there's still Michael Bay as well.
therealycats 5th-Sep-2012 02:50 am (UTC)
Wait, back up? What about the Nick stars?
josiefier 5th-Sep-2012 02:54 am (UTC)
There have been a few blind items, at least one in particular that I remember about forced abortions and such - mostly involving the guy from Head of the Class. Amanda Bynes was one of the main guesses. And judging from some of her recent downward spiral, I tend to believe at least some of it is true.
therealycats 5th-Sep-2012 02:56 am (UTC)
Whoooooa! What guy from Head of the Class? I'm sorry, I don't really keep up with Nick shows so I have no idea who is in charge of what there. Yeah, Amanda Bynes seems to be going off the rails.
josiefier 5th-Sep-2012 03:03 am (UTC)
I don't either really, but it keeps coming up in Amanda posts. Guy's name is Dan Schneider, he's one of the Nick producers. Or at least was then. Here are some posts (you can hit ctrl + f to find his name in them):

OMG DENNIS WTF
josiefier 5th-Sep-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
Yeah. It's one of those that even if it is a "hoax" it's just something that's been around too long for most people to not begin to wonder about. Especially when you look at, specifically, Amanda these days.

It's interesting to compare the career paths of Marilyn Monroe (who used her sexuality as a way to get what she wanted) and Jean Seberg (who was abused and controlled by director Otto Preminger) with Tippi's career decline after refusing to sleep with Hitchcock.

From the Journals of Jean Seberg:

I think the fact that she was bound to him contractually is what made it so different. At least actresses now are under contract for individual films....but yeah, I doubt the sexual harassment is any less.
therealycats 5th-Sep-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
Oh my god, I had no idea about this. This sucks, I love Hitchcock's films (I know, I'm a special snowflake). I think I remember hearing things about him being hard on the actresses but I didn't know about the sexual harassment. *sigh*
mrmidwest 5th-Sep-2012 02:56 am (UTC)
Tippi was classy about not revealing the worst of it for 50 years, but with the movie about their relationship airing on HBO, there's not much point.
kapuki234 5th-Sep-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
ugh i can only imagine the sexual assault hell old hollywood was.
sirenlyfox 5th-Sep-2012 03:40 am (UTC)
I don't think much has changed since then.
kapuki234 5th-Sep-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
i see that, but with technology being the way it is i suspect shit directors do would get revealed faster. like you probably couldn't keep quiet for 50 years.
sirenlyfox 5th-Sep-2012 03:55 am (UTC)
Micheal Bay sprung to mind after reading your comment. But, despite his exposure as a perverted arsehole, his career goes from strength to strength. Whereas, the same can not be said for Megan Fox.
kapuki234 5th-Sep-2012 04:50 am (UTC)
i'm just saying that the dynamic isn't the same. megan wasn't threatened to keep shut her mouth for example, she clearly spoke out against him in interviews. and actresses are no longer contractually "owned" by movie production companies for years.
sirenlyfox 5th-Sep-2012 08:48 am (UTC)
Good point.

I can't believe the Russell Brand thing isn't being talked about more. It's absolutely vile.
