4Chan votes to send Taylor Swift to perform at School for the Deaf

In an online voting contest, trolls have teamed up to send the Grammy-winning songstress to perform at a School for the Deaf

4chan, Reddit, and the Internet's other well-regarded troll havens are once again colluding to send a celebrity somewhere they didn't expect to go.

Their target this time around is break-up singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who recently teamed up with textbook rental company Chegg and dippable pizza-maker Papa John's for a promotional concert at whichever campus gets the most votes.

With lulz-seekers on the case, it wasn't long before a clear leader emerged: The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Allston, Massachusetts.

In addition to a performance by Swift, the top five vote-getting schools will each receive a $10,000 grant for their music department.

Horace Mann currently holds a significant lead over the second-place school, but, as one Redditor points out, the Official Rules state Taylor Swift could still opt out of the performance.

She wouldn't do that to her legions of Horace Mann School fans, would she?

i went to a club in DC for years and there was a college for deaf kids. they used to come out all the time and loved the bass and would dance with everyone all night. it was awesome and always made me so happy.

this whole situation is rude and offensive.

COOL STORY BRO time: I used to work with a profoundly deaf guy. One time he came to work in an Explosions in the Sky T-shirt, and we had a nice conversation about the band and their recent show, which he'd attended and enjoyed. I don't think hearing people realize how many of our impressions of music have little do do with how it "sounds".

That said Taylor Swift is horrible

There was this awesome guy that used to come out to some of my brothers shows at a local bar he played at years ago. He was deaf and blew my mind wide open, needless to say. I'm blessed to have been able to shed that ignorance.

That said, people who get expensive hearing aids -- when they hear music for the first time, it hits them profoundly, and brings them to tears. What deaf people, or people with inexpensive hearing aids, experience with music is not the same.

I'm pretty sure the joke was based more on the name of the school than anything specifically related to its student body or deaf people themselves. Which is problematic in an of itself but I doubt that the trolls here gave a second thought to whether or not deaf people can enjoy music.

Yep. My (completely) deaf friend regularly goes to gigs with me, and idk about US definitions, but in the UK some deaf people have partial hearing. This article and troll attack is really ignorant.

Exactly! I'm glad Horace Mann is going to get this performance, because deaf people can enjoy music and the principal there has done a really good job saying "shame on you 4chan, we're still going to enjoy this" but it's just another example of 4chan being a bunch of ableist assholes and it's not fucking "funny." Ugh, I just really fucking hate 4chan. Name one time they haven't done anything that's inherently fucked up?
