Cinderella Shoe Trend: DSW, Louboutin Take on Princess Heels

Women have never been more obsessed with fancy shoes,  and designers have found a new way to capitalize on the fantasy: give shoppers their own version of Cinderella's iconic glass slippers. On the heels of similar Disney-esque styles from Christian Louboutin and Marc Jacobs, DSW has partnered with Disney on The Glass Slipper Collection , a limited edition line of evening and wedding shoes inspired by the 1950 Disney animated classic film "Cinderella." Shoes range in price from $59.95 to $89.95 and each pair comes with an embossed carriage logo and a signature blue jewel on the sole-perfect for shoe lovers and Disney collectors alike. If that connection isn't enough, The Glass Slipper collection is scheduled to hit DSW stores and DSW.com on October 1, just before the release of the "Cinderella Diamond Edition," Blu-Ray at the stroke of midnight on October 2. This is one time Cinderella will not be leaving her pretty shoe behind!

With crystal adornments, glitter, lace, ruffles, and studs now the norm in upscale footwear, women are always looking for a creative accessories that stand out. Ladies will spend their entire paychecks on new shoes in hopes of fulfilling some sort of fantasy, so shoe brands are wisely partnering with Disney, the company associated for making dreams come true. The iconic Cinderella slipper is a clever yet admittedly obvious way to cash in on the ever-growing shoe market. Since women of all shapes and sizes can fit into a shoe (and not, say, the new trendy designer dress), every single one of them can slip on a magical Cinderella slipper and feel special. At least that's what these shoe outfitters are banking on.

"The inspiration for the line came from the vision of Disney artist Mary Blair's original art for the film," says Debbie Ferrée, Vice Chairman and Chief Merchandising Officer for DSW. "We took a close look at the film's aesthetic details-the rich textures and fabric, the beautiful blue in Cinderella's dress-even the French rococo-inspired scenery. Every little whimsical touch featured in the footwear collection came right out of the film." Robert Oberschelp, Director for Disney Consumer Products was happy to help the animated footwear come to life. "The Glass Slipper Collection captures the beauty and sophistication of Cinderella by tapping into the childhood affinity women have for this beloved character, while creating footwear that is relatable to their lives as adults," says Oberschelp

Last month Christian Louboutin also partnered with Disney on a Cinderella slipper. On July 5, Louboutin debuted its Cinderella shoe on Facebook and the photo caption read, "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, Cinderella has a red sole shoe." Another photo of the crystal and butterfly-adorned pair got 49,000 Facebook likes. "If I had seen these before my wedding...there would be NO debating it!! GORGEOUS," one fan commented on the image. "I'm feeling like a fairytale...I want this," said another.

Only 20 pairs of the Cinderella Louboutins were produced. In the hopes of making dreams come true, they will be given away this fall to some very lucky ladies. (Yes, you read that correctly: free Louboutins!) The brand was scheduled to release details on the giveaway August 17, but no information is currently available at press time. No retail price has been revealed.  We'd imagine they'd cost around $6,400--similar to other crystal-encrusted Louboutins. With such a limited run, however, we would be surprised to see them going for double or triple that price on eBay.

In addition to these two Disney collaborations, the clear fashion trend this spring and summer yielded many other glassy-looking shoes, including the Marc Jacobs Transparent Pump. Designed to look like a modern day Cinderella slipper, these heels were made of see-through PVC with leather trim and retailed for $595. The got the attention of many bloggers, ourselves included, back in May and have since completely sold out.
Meh, these ones are a bit boring, imo.

i have size 11 feet, so basically i don't get pretty shoes.
lizzka 30th-Aug-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
i feel your pain, girl. another size 11 here.

louboutins go up to 11 but...not like i can afford them.
smashy 30th-Aug-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
i remember the first time i got to go to ROSS (i was visiting LA) and i was so excited to see the shoes. every size, except mine, was filled with wonderful colorful things. the size 11 section had one pair of shitty white sandals that looked dirty as fuck.
veggie 30th-Aug-2012 07:16 pm (UTC)
me too ): i spend my days lusting after brands that don't make shoes in gargantuan size, like chelsea crew.

once i find a pair of cute/comfy shoes i pretty much wear them until they fall apart. like right now i'm wearing a pair of ballet flats i got two years ago and have worn almost every day since. D:
hypnology 30th-Aug-2012 07:17 pm (UTC)
I hate when small feet girls try to say 'but at least most people don't have your shoe size. They all sell out so fast.' Bitches please, at least you get cute shoes.
napaypayso Size 11 here, and I like Cole Haan30th-Aug-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
I really like the Air Bacara flats, and the heels with the Nike technology stuff are truly comfy
schexyschteve 30th-Aug-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
Preach! I have some pretty flats, but my shoe collection is nowhere near what it could be.
frenchverbs 30th-Aug-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
I'm a size 10/11 (depending on if it's pointy toe or round toe), and I have a ton of pretty shoes. I've found shoes in my size at zappos.com, Neimans, solestruck.com, Nordstrom, and Ann Taylor, for example.
rocknrollroots 30th-Aug-2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
my sister is an 11 and her shoe collection is AMAZING. I don't know where the hell she finds them.
scarybuttshaka 30th-Aug-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
I hear you on that. I'm a size 11 and narrow. I've been having awesome luck with dsw. I've found some cute shoes but you seriously have to jump on them when you see them. Plus they give you coupons.

As a 10W I feel your pain. All the attractive shoes seem to never be in my size
im_writing 30th-Aug-2012 08:43 pm (UTC)
My size 12 feet feel the pain you go through.

However, if DSW is doing it, they might have our size (they're pretty good about doing nice shoes in big sizes.)

Nordstrom Rack has pretty much been my saving grace. I can buy AWESOME shoes at a decent price.
juunanagou18 30th-Aug-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
Ain't that the truth, and then when we finally, FINALLY, find a cute shoe in our size it's too damn small because the brand is run by assholes.
visceralpoetry 31st-Aug-2012 05:35 am (UTC)
NORDSTROM RACK!!! I went today with my mom and there was an entire WALL of gorgeous shoes in size 13, which makes me think there's even more in 12 and 11. Boots, flats, heels, sandals, etc. And while it's still expensive, it's definitely cheaper than Nordstrom.
nanachic 1st-Sep-2012 03:19 am (UTC)
false! Nordstrom the Rack is your friend. ROWS AND ROWS of 10-13 for women.

I died and went to shoe heaven and I won't shop anywhere else now
fabouluz 30th-Aug-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
I always feel like I look like a pig in heels because I have short feet :( I feel like only long footed women can wear heels.
e133 30th-Aug-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
only short footed women can wear flats, i look like a clown in them if that's any consolation!
xtinkerbellax 30th-Aug-2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
lol I feel this way as well.
marywebgirl 30th-Aug-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
I have small feet, too, and I agree. Although I think spare, strappy heels look a lot better than platforms.
dubiously 30th-Aug-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
Gurl no. heels look best on small feet fo sho.

This is me. I love pretty heels and sandals, but considering I have to be on my feet for 8 hours at work and policy says everything must be closed toe for safety reasons...well, only my ugly shoes get worn.

Edited because I spell good.

Speaking of heels, I bought some nice black ones a few months ago and they fit perfectly when I bought them, but when I tried going out in them, they kept flipping off my feet and I had to switch to flats. I WAS SO SAD. I'm so glad they were really inexpensive, but shit. So disappointing.

Anyone have any tips for trying on heels to make sure they're the right size?
dubiously 30th-Aug-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
Are you talking a pump that encloses the whole foot? I always get those a bit tight. My toes may be scrunched but no blister on my heel.
milkradio 30th-Aug-2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
Yes! That's the kind of heel it was. It was a really basic beginner's heel since I've never owned any before that lol :/ Thanks for the advice.
yayforran 30th-Aug-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
you can take them to the cobbler and ask them to put in a strip of leather in the back heel. it costs about $10-15 and you don't have to worry about them slipping out like the sticker heel inserts
my_drama_only 30th-Aug-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
I have flat feet and cannot wear heels for my life.
visceralpoetry 31st-Aug-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
THE BUTTERFLY. God, it looks like Christina Aguilera's hideous Grammys dress from like 2004 or whatever.
hypnology 30th-Aug-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
I wish shoe designers would make cute heels for already tall girls that don't need an extra six inches but still want a bit of a lift. And also cute heels for girls with big feet.

itwontchange 31st-Aug-2012 04:17 pm (UTC)
same. but i had this pair of heels that i desperately wanted to wear for my bday, and i brought them into work (desk office job) and practiced walking around in them for three days. felt totally comfortable by the time i wore them for my party

i'm going to Europe in late september and i don't know what shoes to bring. i want to look cute but i know i'll also be walking all day long.. any suggestions appreciated!
halfslytherin Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 07:21 pm (UTC)
flats
lookitslisa Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
i've never been able to find good flats .. they always cut into my feet. i usually only wear booties, sandals, or my sperrys and i feel like late sept is too late for sandals & sperrys

between_lights Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
good leather boots never go out of style, bb! I went to europe last winter (Dublin, Paris, and London) and practically lived in boots the whole trip, and my feet definitely did not suffer. I even managed to rock some ankle boots that had a 2.5-inch heel while walking around Paris for 3 days. you can do lace-up combat-style boots, pull-ons, and zip-ups depending on what look you're going for.
w0rds0fl0ve Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
boots/booties! i lived in boots like these when i was in london(august-december), and i was in these the whole time i was in germany (november-december).

brynn__ Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 08:05 pm (UTC)
wedges tbh. i dont bother with heels there because NO on cobblestone. flats tend to be horribly painful after awhile so i tend to go with comfortable wedges.
babyyouloveit Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
Loafers, oxfords, flat boots, and cute sneakers.
chikachika_boom Re: shoe recs30th-Aug-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
loafers or oxfords imo
itwontchange Re: shoe recs31st-Aug-2012 04:28 pm (UTC)
this is one of my concerns too! i'm going to london (only for a week), and i'm trying to figure out what shoes to bring. i have these loafer flats that are super cute and kind of comfy but i'm not sure if they'll last all day as walking shoes. but the leather flats i want from c.wonder are almost $100 =/. those are the only flats I completely trust tho, they're so comfy and durable
missmonkeydust 30th-Aug-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
I wish I could wear heels and not be in pain, my ligaments don't hold my joints properly including the arch in my feet, I mean I tower over my friends; males included, so I wouldn't give two shits towering over them even more. It even hurts to stand for long periods :(
blessedbell 30th-Aug-2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
would inserts help?
missmonkeydust 30th-Aug-2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
I don't think so, I use to have to wear them in flats and it just helped reduce the pain. I just have to make do with wedges or getting really drunk so I can't feel my legs lol
theciz 30th-Aug-2012 08:50 pm (UTC)
Girl, this was me for so many years! Ok, so I still can't exactly wear heels (more to do with the shape of my gd feet, but my injury-induced shitty balance doesn't help) but proper insoles make such a difference. And I don't mean the crappy off the self ones they try and foist on you that don't do shit, I mean proper ones moulded to your feet. Add in wearing proper running shoes for everyday (Brooks are my life savers) and some simple strengthening exercises (that take forever to build up proper muscle, ok, but soooo worth it in the long run) and the other day I stood in line for a book signing for three hours, which was super sore, but I walked it off in five minutes! Five! That shit used to put me out for a couple days.

tl;dr

There are things you can do and even though they can take forever with little progress, they are so worth it. Believe me, I was pissed I waited so long to fix my janky feet/knees.
napaypayso 30th-Aug-2012 07:26 pm (UTC)
All I want is the perfect pair of nude/skin tone heels in leather or suede (no patent pls) in a size 11

I just bought a pair of blue Kate Spade heels for work, and I am impatiently waiting for them to come in the mail even though I seriously ordered then an hour ago. They're so pretty!
blessedbell 30th-Aug-2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
I bought a fantastic pair of heels from Target. They're black and awesome and I love them.

Photobucket

BUT

I have zero coordination and I struggle walking in them. ): I've stumbled a couple of times. Is there like, a secret to this? Do I have to take smaller steps, walk heel to toe, what? I love them but they're so difficult :S
vicvinegar 30th-Aug-2012 07:33 pm (UTC)
are they comfy? thats the kind of heel im looking for
blessedbell 30th-Aug-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
For the most part, yeah.

I haven't really mastered them yet though.
hypnology 30th-Aug-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
Just practice walking around your house. And walk slower (because heels automatically slow you down anyways.)

I am a pro in heels for how little I wear them. I can walk on grass, semi-run, and get low and back up on the dancefloor in them lol
temperance_k 30th-Aug-2012 07:41 pm (UTC)
While I generally stick to wedges/clunky heels, what you said above is basically what you have to do. Take smaller steps (don't expect to be able to fast walk. I tend to walk faster than the normal person going for a stroll, and my feet hate me for trying it in heels), DEFINITELY walk heel to toe. It might be awkward at first, but once you get used to it, you'll have a good stride.

And... practice, basically. Get used to balancing/centering on them, and take it slow the first few times, and you should be okay.
fever 30th-Aug-2012 07:58 pm (UTC)
just walk in them for some time and stumbling will be gone /at least that was my case
itwontchange 31st-Aug-2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
i brought in heels to work for three days and practiced walking in them around the office. by the time i wore them for an occasion, i was pro in them lol
