This year's POP Montreal will host the second annual "POP vs. Jock" basketball game, featuring athletes, musicians, and Martin Starr of "Freaks and Geeks"/"Party Down" fame. Win Butler of Arcade Fire will play once again, as will Nikolai Fraiture of the Strokes. Arcade Fire's Régine Chassagne will provide organ accompaniment, and David Byrne & Moment Factory will play the halftime show. The event takes place September 22 at McGill University's Sports Centre.
Just like last year, all proceeds from the game will go to DJ Sports Club, a non-profit Montreal charity that offers programs in sports and education. The POP team will play against members of the McGill University Redmen and the Concordia University Stingers.
Earlier this summer, it was reported that Byrne and Butler will discuss Byrne's upcoming book How Music Works at the festival that same day. The conversation will take place at the Ukrainian Federation, co-presented by POP Montreal's Symposium and Librairie Drawn & Quarterly.
POP Montreal takes place September 19-23 in venues throughout the city. The lineup includes Grizzly Bear, Dirty Three, Hot Snakes, Tim Hecker, Lil B, Julia Holter, Gang Gang Dance, Zammuto, Patrick Wolf, DaM-FunK, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Laetitia Sadier, and more.
