Park Chan-wook Takes on Violent Western 'Brigands of Rattleborge'

What's next for acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, the mind behind the Vengeance Trilogy/Oldboy and Thirst? He's finishing up his latest film Stoker, starring Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, for Fox Searchlight, and now Variety is reporting he's in talks to move onto a western called The Brigands of Rattleborge next. Red Granite Pictures is financing with Mythology Entertainment, working from a script written by Craig Zahler that was on the Blacklist a few years ago. It's an ultraviolent western with quite a few good roles to fill, and I think it might be an excellent follow-up to Stoker for Chan-wook.

The screenplay by S. Craig Zahler (Asylum Blackout) made the Blacklist back in 2006. The original synopsis for Brigands of Rattleborge: "The story is about a group of ruthless thieves who use the cover of a torrential rainstorm to plunder a frontier town named Rattleborge. During the chaotic aftermath, the bereaved sheriff must team up with a vengeful doctor to seek retribution." It's essentially about a group of bandits who use the cover of a thunderstorm to rob a small town. See what I mean about great roles? Bandits, sheriffs, a doctor, townspeople, and Park can always round up talented actors. Stoker is Park's English-language debut, and if all goes well, it sounds like Brigands of Rattleborge might be his English-language follow-up.

This movie sounds very promising and considering the director, it is definitely a must see. Thanks for the post.

I love him.
What's ONTD's favorite Park Chan-wook movie? Mine is Lady Vengeance or Oldboy.

Oldboy, it was the first one I saw and it shocked me so much. I remember I was putting my makeup on and the twist was revealed and I pretty much dropped the blush brush.

I knew the twist before I saw it and I was still shocked, although I feel like I maybe would have liked it over Lady V if I didn't know about the twist.

I remember liking Lady V, but I don't really remember the movie that well. That's the downfall of seeing movies with your boyfriend.

TBH out of all of Park's films Lady Vengeance affected me the least. The earlier Vengeance films pretty much subverted the expectations of the genre whereas LV came off as more conventional IMO in comparison.

Arghhh Your Icon, amazing. Sympathy for Mr Vengeance is my most favourite of his films, such a greek tragedy story.

Oldboy for me as well.

I'm so here for that Stoker movie even tho I have no idea what it is about. Damn you Matthew Goode.

I'd still see it tho, I really like that Vengeance trilogy.

I am SO psyched for Stoker because it's Park Chan Wook and my love Matthew Goode!!!! also i just like the rest of the cast too.

hmm a Western? I'd like him to do more dark shit tbh. but i suppose Westerns can be dark too.

I read a script by this writer that had a place on 2011 blacklist. Fuck! I was literally STUNNNEDD by how bad it was. I mean, really!?!?! Is he related to someone? How do people like this get their shit made?!
