New British sitcom "Citizen Khan" About British-Pakistani Family Is Offensive/Racist/Stereotypical

Is Citizen Khan offensive? Yes, and not because of its treatment of religion but because it patronises its audience by flogging dead jokes and dumb stereotypes. It is offensive for parading as a shiny new comedy when its biggest failure is its lack of originality and wit, which, you’d think, would be a pre-requisite for any new comedy series.

That it is a ‘Muslim’ comedy, dealing in such freighted motifs as the Koran, the hijab and the interior of a mosque, is not its crime. This could have marked its boldness – to take on such subjects in our politically-charged times and turn them into cutting-edge comedy that has something relevant, even provocative, to say. Chris Morris’s satire, Four Lions, was all about ‘Muslims’ – suicide bombers, no less – and all the British Muslims I spoke to, including the former Guantanamo detainee, Moazzam Begg, found it funny. Who can remember it being described as offensive?

smh. But I have to give some credit to the U.K. for trying. I doubt the U.S. would EVER dedicate an entire sitcom to a Pakistani family, at least not in this ~post-racial society~.

i thought the US did have a tv show about muslims but idk what it's called.
konichiwacobra 29th-Aug-2012 07:50 pm (UTC)
that reality show on TLC? didn't they lose all their advertisers or something.
bollyhood 29th-Aug-2012 07:53 pm (UTC)
Gross and unsurprising sadly.
interrobamf 29th-Aug-2012 07:53 pm (UTC)
They lost some advertisers, but ultimately it was just a boring show nobody watched.
beatlesluv 29th-Aug-2012 08:33 pm (UTC)
OMG I forgot about that one!
flashnights 29th-Aug-2012 07:52 pm (UTC)
they had a reality one on tlc i think but it got cancelled. and canada had one called little mosque on the prairie which also sucked
andromakhe001 29th-Aug-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's necessarily a fair comparison. I mean for example how many British Sitcoms are dedicated to an Hispanic family? There have been US sitcoms about Hispanic families. Those are the larger minority groups in the US, like East Asians are I believe one of the larger minority groups in the UK.
likewowman 29th-Aug-2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
Canada has a (fairly popular) one called Little Mosque on the Prairie, and I think it's shown in the US too?
beatlesluv 29th-Aug-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)
There's one in Canada called "little mosque on the prairie," but now it's going to be called "little mosque." They have conservative muslim families (as some are) and more liberal modern families who identify as part of islam too. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?
honeebs 29th-Aug-2012 07:49 pm (UTC)
Too bad they didn't bother to get in touch with the actors. I would like to know what they think.
mutterby 29th-Aug-2012 07:50 pm (UTC)
The show is written by one of the leading actors.
treebraids 29th-Aug-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
Makes a change from when the BBC commissioned a show about a black family written by a white guy.
sofiascarlett 29th-Aug-2012 08:08 pm (UTC)
Yeah, and he created the show as well.
mutterby 29th-Aug-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
I'm kind of curious as to if he was pandering to a white audience, or if he genuinely thinks he's doing no harm in his stereotypes.
fleuriee 29th-Aug-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19395994

is the article on the BBC which has comments from the actor and various other Muslims, etc.

Four Lions was so good!
sirenlyfox 29th-Aug-2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
And, do you know what made it good? Benedict Cumberbatch for two minutes at the end. lol
konichiwacobra 29th-Aug-2012 11:18 pm (UTC)
i'm just about to watch him in this parade's end. i have no idea what it's about, just that he's involved.

I did find bits funny, but mostly...meh

Such a good film.
taecish 29th-Aug-2012 07:51 pm (UTC)
i watched the 1st ep, it was cheesy and not very funny
xevochic 29th-Aug-2012 07:53 pm (UTC)
Well the US had that Outsourced show which focused on Indians. But everyone marked it up as racist before bothering to watch it. It was actually pretty good. From what I remember, the main Whities were boring as fuck, but the Indian characters were awesome.

IDEK if it's still on.
testdrivegirl 29th-Aug-2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
it WAS racist
treebraids 29th-Aug-2012 07:57 pm (UTC)
Genuine question, What was racist about it?
chokey_lowkey 29th-Aug-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
I'm indian and didn't think it was racist...
xevochic 29th-Aug-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
How, if I may ask? I only watched a handful of eps here and there, so maybe I missed some stuff.
manu19 29th-Aug-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
not really tho, thats like saying Raj of TbbT is racist and my indian friends LOVE him

Edited at 2012-08-29 08:00 pm (UTC)
ohhhlife 29th-Aug-2012 08:08 pm (UTC)
How was it racist?
treebraids 29th-Aug-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
I agree. I've been hoping for someone to enlighten me on what is racist about it so far nothing.
la_petite_singe 29th-Aug-2012 08:01 pm (UTC)
I only watched the pilot for work, but I found it staggeringly unfunny. Like, I found the race stuff problematic, but totally aside from that it just wasn't funny.
gumball619 29th-Aug-2012 08:03 pm (UTC)
Outsourced was about Indians living in India though. This is a television show that includes POC actors depicting Pakistanis that relies almost entirely on quirky, overdramatic accents and stereotypical cultural characteristics (being cheap, focus on marriage, etc.)
hera_bearrra 29th-Aug-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
Outsourced the movie was much better
invisible_cunt 29th-Aug-2012 08:31 pm (UTC)
we had a really good show here that was actually cute and funny
- little mosque on the prairie
kerrigwen 31st-Aug-2012 05:28 am (UTC)
Outsourced was just terrible, absolutely terrible. Bad writing, bad plot, pretty-close-to-terrible acting. :-S
fiery_icicle 29th-Aug-2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
Canada's Little Mosque on the Prairie was actually good.
kirensauce 29th-Aug-2012 07:58 pm (UTC)
just what i came to say, i think you can find the series on youtube
keyko101 29th-Aug-2012 07:58 pm (UTC)
wait what? That was real?
fiery_icicle 29th-Aug-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)
Yes? It's set in the prairies of Canada (Saskatchewan IIRC) and the name is supposed to be a play on Little House on the Prairie LOL. I don't know if it's still on but someone above mentioned episodes are on YT.
kerrigwen 31st-Aug-2012 05:29 am (UTC)
what do you mean? been on the air for years. It's an absolute gem, genuinely funny AND smart (rare combo).
ahkna 29th-Aug-2012 08:04 pm (UTC)
I thought it was too.
konichiwacobra 29th-Aug-2012 08:11 pm (UTC)
hmm i may watch it. It's just called Little Mosque on Hulu
invisible_cunt 29th-Aug-2012 08:32 pm (UTC)
yeah, that's an example of how to do it right
superdogbiter 29th-Aug-2012 07:55 pm (UTC)
lol at the memory when some people on here said the uk isn't racist
fleuriee 29th-Aug-2012 08:37 pm (UTC)
Its very racist in parts, probs the people who say it isn't come from places with no POC, tbh I was 9 years old before I saw a POC in real life, I kid you not. Also racism is horribly socially acceptable here, my brother and his black gf get heckled in public sometimes :(
kawaiisis86 29th-Aug-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
Damn what part of the uk are you from?
xdecadentx 30th-Aug-2012 03:08 pm (UTC)
LOL you can't say any one country is 'not racist'.
kerrigwen 31st-Aug-2012 05:31 am (UTC)
most forums I've been on, people from the UK have been surprisingly more ignorant and hateful than even Americans regarding race.
agentgoodnight 29th-Aug-2012 07:58 pm (UTC)
Canada has a great show about a Muslim family, Little Mosque on the Prairie. It seems pretty popular up here.
aflaminghalo 29th-Aug-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
I caught 5 mins last night. Incrediby awful. Surprised it doesn't have a Sat night slot.
die2nitelive4ev 29th-Aug-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)
MTE. I was offended by how funny and not how racially insensitive it was
wauwy 29th-Aug-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
But I have to give some credit to the U.K. for trying. I doubt the U.S. would EVER dedicate an entire sitcom to a Pakistani family, at least not in this ~post-racial society~.

Are we really doing this though
slutzilla 29th-Aug-2012 08:02 pm (UTC)
lol mte
gumball619 29th-Aug-2012 08:05 pm (UTC)
what? Looking back, when was the last time there was a television sitcom about a POC family that didn't rely entirely on stereotypes? Sister, Sister? That's so Raven?
hera_bearrra 29th-Aug-2012 08:10 pm (UTC)
My Wife and Kids

The George Lopez Show

andromakhe001 29th-Aug-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
I'm just saying I don't see how the point of your comment in the original post fits this article. The British made a show about a Pakistani family and it was apparently racist and offensive, the US has made various shows about minorities and they have also often been considered various levels of offensive. Sounds like it's all about the same.

Clearly there needs to be improvement on both sides of the Atlantic.
hera_bearrra 29th-Aug-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
I've heard (I think Idris Elba spoke about this) that the US has more opportunities for POC actors and actresses than the UK.

But overall they both suck.

manu19 29th-Aug-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
lol u guys should watch "Turkish for Beginners" its/was the most stereotyped "offensive" show in Germany and won lots of awards and has a huge fanbase.

lol, shit I remember watching this every sunday and loving Yağmur and Costa. The 3rd season was terrible. I think it was meant to be that way though.
manu19 29th-Aug-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
lol i hated it when it aired because i thought its just another typical "ARD" show but when the movie came out this year (which i loved) i rewatched the whole series and became a fan ^^ but yea the 3rd season is kinda crazy over the top

Edited at 2012-08-29 08:07 pm (UTC)
300psychosis 29th-Aug-2012 08:41 pm (UTC)
I didn't even know that show existed until the movie came out.
Whether it's the most stereotyped show on German TV is arguable though haha ;)
ciel_est_bleu 29th-Aug-2012 08:57 pm (UTC)
YES!!! I love this show soooo much - I love the way they played with the steretypes, for example Metin being the most "german" in the familiy etc.
breaktheice89 29th-Aug-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm Turkish and I used to watch the show all the time with my mom. That doesn't mean the show wasn't problematic though or you can't criticise it, I just take it for what it is. It wasn't only the first and only show about a turkish family, but a german/turkish patchwork family as well.
dresden_doll_01 29th-Aug-2012 10:11 pm (UTC)
Watching S2 DVD at this very moment! Mostly because I can't actually force myself to study for tomorrow's German exam and this makes me feel less guilty... I was so disappointed the dvds didn't have German subtitles, tho :(
la_petite_singe 29th-Aug-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
Oh no, really? Not surprising, I guess. And the US has kinda tried to have shows focused on non-whites, but they're usually cringey. Remember Outsourced? I cannot believe that survived an entire season. (And it had white leads anyway.) Once again I will say that Shonda Rhimes' style of race-blind casting is the only way to do it. :P
spankmypirate 29th-Aug-2012 08:01 pm (UTC)
This just makes me miss Goodness Gracious Me
misoras 29th-Aug-2012 08:07 pm (UTC)
omg yes.

the other male cast member was one of my neighbours relatives and i saw him irl when i was like 10. i am v. proud of my only celeb encounter.
spankmypirate 29th-Aug-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
omg really? I am so jealous! The show was so brilliant and funny. It still makes me laugh:

daddyissues 29th-Aug-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)

aflaminghalo 29th-Aug-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
I loved that show so hard.

And The Desmonds (I am that old).
daddyissues 29th-Aug-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
MY MUM WAS ON THAT SHOW ONCE

well, a picture of her was... in the background of one of the sketches.
bluekrinkle 29th-Aug-2012 08:50 pm (UTC)
My husband just said people on here would probably think Goodness Gracious Me is racist when it isn't.
I'm not from the UK so I have no idea what that show is, so I'm just going to have to take his word on this one.
su20 29th-Aug-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
i laughed a lot watching that show. loved it growing up!!
arcadiaego 29th-Aug-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
Oh god, I still quote that sometimes. I miss it so much!
xdecadentx 30th-Aug-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
I MADE THIS SAME COMMENT

I wish they re-ran it, or even released it on DVD.
xevochic 29th-Aug-2012 08:01 pm (UTC)
Oh, the US also had that "Aliens in America" show about the Pakistani foreign exchange student. That show was fucking fantastic and touch on some important issues while staying funny. I suppose the main family was White but the Pakistani kid was who made the show since it revolved around him and his culture/religion.

But it got cancelled...because that's how the US do, I guess.
misoras 29th-Aug-2012 08:08 pm (UTC)
I LOVED THAT SHOW S M SFM

r.i.p
xevochic 29th-Aug-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
