Ryan Gosling To Make Directorial Debut

Ryan Gosling is making his directorial debut with "How To Catch a Monster," it was announced today. The film -- produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel on behalf of Marc Platt Productions -- will be based on an original screenplay by Gosling, and star his "Drive" co-star Christina Hendricks.

"I am very appreciative to Marc Platt, Adam Siegel and Bold Films for being so supportive and I look forward to making this film with all of them," Gosling said in a statement.

Sierra / Affinity will handle international sales for the film which will be made available to buyers for the first time at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Principal photography for the film is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2013.

"We have a tremendous amount of trust and confidence in Ryan, Christina, Marc and Adam, both personally and professionally," Michel Litvak, Bold Films financier, said. "We responded immediately to Ryan's script, and look forward to nurturing the next phase of his career and continuing Bold's commitment to an artistically collaborative environment."

Producer, Marc Platt added: “We are thrilled to be producing Ryan Gosling's debut as a writer & director and continue our collaboration which began on 'Drive.' He has composed a beautifully haunting script and has a very clear vision of how he will bring it to life. His ability to draw audiences into his world as an actor will serve him well as a filmmaker."

The film is described by the press release as the following:

"'How To Catch a Monster' weaves elements of fantasy noir, and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive."

The film marks Gosling’s first time writing and directing a feature film.

The description sounds exactly like what I imagined it would be the moment I heard his weird ass was directing a film.

haha ikr
warsawed 29th-Aug-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
Really? I didn't know he was into scifi/fantasy. He's never even acted in that genre before!
thelovehater 29th-Aug-2012 07:41 pm (UTC)
He's really into ghosts, monsters, the macabre and supernatural. Plus he writes a lot of ghost stories / fantasy stories in his spare time. I don't know if any of this has spilled over into his professional career before (excepting the general weirdness of Dead Man's Bones) but in interviews he's always bringing up some spooky stuff. He's a lovable weirdo tbh.

You should check out his band, all their songs are like this.

God, Drive was one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen. It was so severely over-hyped (as was its soundtrack, which DIDN'T GO WITH THE FILM AT ALL, IDC WHAT ANYONE SAYS). Horrible.

Can't wait to watch his directorial debut, though. He seems to have what it takes.
ponpiri 29th-Aug-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
I thought Drive was really good for one viewing only. I saw it a second time in theaters and once more at home and it wasn't the same.

Soundtrack is OK, but I've had most of those songs for a while so I wasn't immediately blown away
oh_sailor 29th-Aug-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
I don't think I hate the songs as much as I hate it when people say they went perfectly with the film. Just... no. Some, but most not at all.

I can't agree enough with you.
astralwish 29th-Aug-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
Drive's OST was soooo basic, even Pitchfork fans know better.

I found it okay when I saw it, but it really pissed me off when I later found out that Carey Mulligan's character was supposed to be Latina and they white washed her.
tigirah 29th-Aug-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
I thought the movie was so boring but I loved the soundtrack and opening credits and the whole understated 80s' style and I thought they did that well, so hate on.
laurie_springs 29th-Aug-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
I loved the movie but the soundtrack is the most overhyped piece of music I can think of in a LONG time.

I usually love Ryan's films, but that movie was so fucking overrated omg. i was checking my watch every 5 minutes. I honestly would have left if it wasn't for the fact that I didn't drive.
sessile29 29th-Aug-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
drive was simply okay. his performance was fantastic, but yeah it was a little overhyped.

I'm not a huge fangirl of Hendricks, but kudos to him for hiring her in a lead role. I'm sure she doesn't receive many offers.
luna_potterhead 29th-Aug-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
Isn't she co-directing though?
