I do photography here in NYC as well, and you are dead on. I don't know ANYONE who likes his work. I don't understand how he still gets big names??? I jokingly turn my flash on and just take a photo of a white wall and tell people I am done because of this guys uninspired portfolio of work.

Did you work at any certain photo studio out here? I'm sort of in the same boat as you, I work a 9-5 because freelance work is up and down.

no, i wasn't lucky enough to work at a studio. it was my dream to study photography in college, BUT i couldn't afford it. :( so... i decided to spend all my time teaching myself. day and night. every second i had free. became obsessed. i'm self-taught, so i couldn't get a studio job without a degree or previous experience. sucks. when i moved to new york, a friend of a friend of a friend knew someone in the theater biz and he fought really hard to get me a meeting with some folks who did theater press. god bless him! they ended up giving me a last minute job after their photog canceled on them - which turned out to be the closing night of RENT. i was basically shitting my pants.

thankfully, they were really happy with my photos so... i got to work with them while i lived in NYC. what i did was mostly press photography. not my "passion" obviously, because i could never really get 'creative' with the work, but it was a very cool experience nonetheless. and i have so many good memories of new york because of it. really grateful for the memories. and it didn't hurt that i got to meet every famous theater actor ever, and a million famous hollywood actors as well! that was fun!! haha

here are a few theater photos i took. again these photos are not the greatest, but hey, i never said i was annie leibovitz right?! :)

i always say, photography is my passion... but work and life got in the way... :(
