Another Moonwalker gone - Celebrities respond

Celebrities tweet reactions to Neil Armstrong's death

Neil Armstrong, who became the first man to walk on the moon in 1969, died today yesterday at age 82. Following Armstrong’s final departure from this world, celebrities have taken to Twitter to honor the late astronaut’s memory and to commemorate his heroism.

Many of the reactions on the micro-blogging site come from entertainers known for their sci-fi work, like Tron actor Bruce Boxleitner and Moon director Duncan Jones, whose fictional journeys beyond Earth’s orbit have undeniably been influenced by the real-life explorer. Stardust author Neil Gaiman tweeted a photo of himself, Armstrong and fellow writer Neal Stephenson, remarking on his blog, “I spent a couple of days in Neil Armstrong’s company. He was as nice, as modest and as wise as anybody could have hoped for. If you ever wondered what my face looks like when I’m going, ‘This is really happening, and I am the luckiest man in the world,’ it looks a lot like it does in this photo.”

Read on for more reactions to Armstrong’s passing:

I've been reading about nothing else since he died. Obsessing really. This is making me so sad. All the Greats are leaving us. RIP :(

zxora 27th-Aug-2012 01:53 am (UTC)
God damn it, people are stupid, lol. Damn. Just because you're stupid doesn't mean you have to broadcast that fact to the world on Twitter!
firefox1490 27th-Aug-2012 01:54 am (UTC)
The last one makes me laugh the most. Really Neil Armstrong =/= Neil Patrick Harris

The mix up of Neil Armstrong and Lance Armstrong makes me roll my eyes like they'd know who Lance Armstrong was if he hadn't just gotten striped of his medals.
winter_lace 27th-Aug-2012 02:00 am (UTC)
I saw a whole heap that were "RIP Neil Armstrong. Lead singer of Green Day." So apparently you're completely interchangeable with the surname Armstrong
sweetlilcanuck 27th-Aug-2012 01:55 am (UTC)
I'm waiting for the Buzzfeed article about this tbh

I was nearly in tears reading Buzz Aldrin's statement and then started snorting when I read these tweets. I feel really unsettled now.

Afaik the chick who wrote the fourth tweet is a troll among the Bieber fandom so I'm pretty sure she's just trolling.
dynamitered 27th-Aug-2012 02:00 am (UTC)
lmao, I know they're probably children but how do they not know Neil Armstrong?
tutuhead 27th-Aug-2012 02:02 am (UTC)
i really did think he was already dead :\
and i thought all the RIP tweets were because it was the anniversary of his death. oop

mistyraven 27th-Aug-2012 02:51 am (UTC)
Ngl, I used to mix up Neil Armstrong and Lance Armstrong all the time when I was in elementary school. Same thing with Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson, and probably a few other pairs of people as well.

Basically I'm glad I didn't have twitter when I was 7.

Wow, some of these tweets gave me chills.
ladyofmachinery 27th-Aug-2012 01:59 am (UTC)
Same. Ugh I had to go for a walk in between looking for some of these - I only added a few from the original source and a bunch of others are from the celebs I follow but while searching, I had to read all the sad stuff from non-celebs too and it was just urgh :////
faithgrowsold 27th-Aug-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
Yeah, I've been pretty much avoiding most of this because I get super emotional very easily, but thank you for putting this together. It was lovely :)
ectypes 27th-Aug-2012 01:51 am (UTC)
It's when we lose people like this that I truly start realizing how pointless celebrities are
ladyofmachinery 27th-Aug-2012 02:00 am (UTC)
yup... I mean that's hypocritical in a way as I'm on a celebrity/popculture website but there's no contest in who matter more. To me at least.
ectypes 27th-Aug-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
Yep. Same thing happened when I was watching Olympians everyday. Not quite to the same extent as Neil, but still.
deevee45 27th-Aug-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
Seriously... how on Earth does snooki get to share the day's headlines with Neil Armstrong??

this made me tear up. :'(
zxora 27th-Aug-2012 01:52 am (UTC)
I happened to look Neil Armstrong up the other day on Wikipedia, and now I'm remembering that his birthday was August 30th--he died less than five days from his 83rd birthday...:-(.
ilikeandrewbird 27th-Aug-2012 01:53 am (UTC)
with all due respect, does anyone give a fuck about what a celeb thinks about this?

One of the reasons Neal was respected is because he didnt want to be a celebrity. He didnt give many interviews or do the Hollywood thing BECAUSE he didnt think his profession should be mixed in with celebrity bullshit.
firefox1490 27th-Aug-2012 01:56 am (UTC)

He lived a fame free life because these sort of people meant nothing to him because he wasn't a celebrity and didn't want to be one.
ladyofmachinery 27th-Aug-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
Nope. Not really. Except a few. But this website requires some kind of story related to celebs in order to get approved, non? Anyway believe me, as someone who's studying astrophysics, I couldn't give two shits about what someone really thinks. I just wanted a post. Gimme this one k...

ETA: Also, the thing I really really wanted to post was Buzz Aldrin's statement but I highly doubt that that alone would get approved.

how far are you into your studies, jw. i'm aiming for astrobiology and i'm wondering how the courseload differs
tink_1326 28th-Aug-2012 01:21 am (UTC)
I wish there was a statement from Mike Collins too, I love him to pieces. You should read his book, I read it the other year and it was amazing! It's called "Carrying the Fire".
karrixftw 27th-Aug-2012 02:02 am (UTC)

Also, I don't think we're looking to celebrities for their responses because they're the end all be all as far as opinions and mourning goes, but more because this is ONTD and we focus on celebrities because that's what this comm is about?
mcwicca 27th-Aug-2012 03:04 am (UTC)
I care about what Neil deGrasse Tyson thinks about this tbh.
fuckyess 27th-Aug-2012 03:33 am (UTC)

A friend had his facebook status as "It's been a bad week for the Armstrong's" and I couldn't help laughing. I felt bad.
zxora 27th-Aug-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
Yep, one of my friends posted something similar, ha.
ladyofmachinery 27th-Aug-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
A couple of people on my fb posted something similar too
hera_bearrra 27th-Aug-2012 01:57 am (UTC)
