We were concerned when we learned Avril Lavigne decided to get engaged to Nickelback's Chad Kroeger — but not surprised. Musicians of different stripes have a long, ridiculous history of hooking up with with one another; and while can't vouch for the longevity of these relationships, all these folks felt a special, unique, completely confounding magic.


Stevie Nicks and Don Henley

After splitting with her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsay Buckingham, Stevie Nicks quietly had a two-year relationship with the Eagles' Don Henley, which culminated in their collaborative hit "Leather & Lace." The love affair reportedly ended when Nicks aborted her and Henley's baby, an event that inspired the Tusk track "Sara."

Cher and Gregg Allman

The strange, unlikely marriage between the Southern jam band legend and the "I Got You Babe" pop diva lasted from 1975 to 1979. The result of Allman's third of six marriages was one son named Elijah Blue Allman, who grew up to front the band Deadsy.

Richie Sambora and Cher

Cher was involved with a lot of famous people throughout her six decades in the spotlight, including Warren Beatty, Tom Cruise, Kiss' Gene Simmons (with whom she enjoyed "the best relationship I've ever had with a human being") and, for a little while in the early '90s, before Heather Locklear and Denise Richards, Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora.

Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams

The King of Pop and the King's daughter. Instead of producing ridiculously talented kids, this marriage instead created ridiculously awkward moments, namely this kiss at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards. The Jackson/Presley union lasted less than two years, and was likely no aided by the child molestation charges Michael faced during that time.

Joel Madden and Hilary Duff

A pattern emerged in the early '00s where heavily tattooed emo frontmen began dating teenaged pop starlets. What made this couple unique was that Duff was only 16 when she hooked up with Madden, then 25. Alas, after about two years of dating, the pair split.

Vanilla Ice and Madonna / Madonna and Big Daddy Kane

It'd probably be easier to compile a list of celebrities that Madonna didn't get busy with, but among her more interesting musical conquests — thus the omission of Dennis Rodman — were one-hit-wonder Vanilla Ice and Juice Crew MC Big Daddy Kane. Both rappers made provocative cameos in Madonna's vilified Sex book.

Prince and Susanna Hoffs

Prince is notorious for his many "protégés," as you'll soon see. Hoffs and the Bangles benefited from her romance with the Purple Rain singer as Prince penned the hit "Manic Monday" specifically for the band. Like all of Prince's flings, however, it didn't last long.

Kathleen Hanna and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz

Bikini Kill singer, Riot Grrrl catalyst, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" inspirer Kathleen Hanna first began dating Beastie Boy Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, a man once known for a stage show featuring cage-dancing girls and a giant inflatable penis, in the late '90s. The pair married in 2006.

Christina Aguilera and Fred Durst

In an attempt to differentiate herself from the then-PG-rated Britney Spears, the newly dubbed "Xtina" made the ill-advised decision to hook up with "Nookie" seeker Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. Unfortunately for the "Dirrty" girl, instead of fading away, her brief fling was immortalized with a dis on Eminem's hit "The Real Slim Shady." ("Shit, Christina Aguilera, better switch me chairs so I can sit next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst and hear 'em argue over who she gave head to first.")

Eminem and Mariah Carey

When he wasn't wrestling whether to stay with or leave his baby mama Kim, Slim Shady entered into a relationship with Mariah Carey. Things didn't end well, as evidenced by Carey's 2009 single "Obsessed," which seems to exist solely to taunt Marshall Mathers and his then-drug problem.

Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra

Prince protégé, part two. In 1993, before Singled Out and Baywatch, Prince wrote and produced Carmen Electra's self-titled debut album. It'd be the only album the Playmate ever released. Electra later married Jane's Addiction guitarist Navarro, which lasted for three years and one MTV show. Strangely enough, this wasn't the first time a woman from Prince's never-ending harem linked up with someone with more tattoos and eyeliner than the Paisley Park overlord…

Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones

Everyone's favorite whiskey-soaked troubadour dated the eclectic Jones from 1977 to 1982. In a very Bryan Ferry-like move, the relationship was significant enough for Waits to put Jones on the back cover of 1978's Blue Valentine.

Vanessa Carlton and Stephan Jenkins

A match made in I Love the 00s heaven: Third Eye Blind frontman Jenkins became involved with "A Thousand Miles" singer Carlton after the two toured together in 2002. The relationship eventually ended in 2007, but we'll always have that episode of MTV Cribs to remember it by.

Lily Allen and Chemical Brothers' Ed Simons

Like Lily Allen's career itself, this romance was much more popular in Great Britain than it was here in the States. The party animal and the dance music pioneer began dating in 2007, despite a 15-year age gap between the two. Unfortunately, after suffering through a very public miscarriage, the pair split in 2008.

Nikki Sixx and Vanity

Prince protégé, part three. Vanity 6 was another benefactor of Prince's immense musical talents, and Vanity was supposed to star alongside her beau in Purple Rain. However, they broke up, and the Apollonia 6 was born. Like Electra, Vanity rebounded with the most tatted-up dude she could find, Mòtley Crüe's Nikki Sixx. The romance lasted less than a year, and Vanity has since become a hardcore Christian.

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz

Another joyous union between emo star and pop starlet, the Fall Out Boy and Jessica Simpson's lip-syncing little sister began dating in 2007, were eventually married and had a son named Bronx. However, like their popularity, their love began to fade, and the couple divorced in early 2011.

Kylie Minogue and Michael Hutchence

Part one of Australia's unlikely couples, then-soap opera star Kylie and INXS frontman Michael Hutchence dated in the late '80s, resulting in INXS' Minogue tribute track "Suicide Blonde." However, the relationship wasn't significant enough to warrant more than a one-sentence mention on Minogue's Wikipedia page.

Natalie Imbruglia and Daniel Johns

Part two of unlikely Down Under love found the Silverchair frontman marrying the "Torn" singer in 2003. Sadly, after five years together, the couple divorced in 2008.
