A History of the Shortest Celebrity Marriages

n one night of terrible judgment, Chad Johnson's world changed dramatically and one of the NFL's most entertaining celebrities joined an exclusive club. And no, it's not the pro football hall of fame. It's the short marriage club.

Johnson allegedly headbutted his wife Evelyn Lozada, which brought on her decision to file for divorce days later, capping their marriage at 41 days. That's brief, but far from the shortest on record.

It could be that the passions that make someone exciting and famous make them impulsive, and it's simply part of the deal. Or it could be that celebrities are a little dumber than the rest of us in the game of love.

Passion or stupidity? Read our History of the Shortest Celebrity Marriages and decide for yourself.

Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney

Length of Marriage: 225 days

The actress and the hunky country star tied the knot in 2005 and called it quits some even months later. But what raised eyebrows was Zellweger's claim, in the legal documents, of "fraud" on the part of Chesney. Rumors ran wild that Chesney was gay. Renee explained that it was merely a legal term, but to this day some remain unconvinced.

Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd

Length Of Marriage: 218 days

Some celebrities will rebound from a high-profile relationship by tying the knot with a minor celeb or civilian. Such was the case when, just a few months after splitting from Diddy, she married choreographer and musician Cris Judd. When Judd later won I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, the $200,000 prize went to the Make-a-Wish foundation. His, though, had already come true, as the three settlements with Lopez had made him a very rich man.

Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad Hilton

Length Of Marriage: 205 days

She was a hot 18-year-old starlet, having risen to prominence in National Velvet six years earlier. He was a 24-year-old hotel heir and socialite. But what's more scandalous: this extremely brief marriage or the fact that it was just the first of nine Liz would have?

Shannen Doherty and Ashley Hamilton

Length Of Marriage: 198 days

Doherty was one of the stars of the original Beverly Hills: 90210 at the time, while Hamilton, an actor, was best known as the son of uber-tan George Hamilton. They wed in September 1993, but six and a half months later called it quits, citing irreconcilable differences. A month later, Doherty's character on 90210 was history as well, having been written out of the series at the end of the 1994 season.

Drew Barrymore and Tom Green

Length Of Marriage: 163 days

Marry Tom Green? Marry Tom Green? What was Drew Barrymore thinking? She had been a fan of his TV show, so did she not notice how he crapped on his parents at every opportunity? You do not want to be related to this man. Now, as to why the marriage actually failed, we do not know. When filing for divorce, they cited the ever-vague "irreconcilable differences."

Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock

Length Of Marriage: 122 days

Why did this one end? Some say it's because Anderson wanted to live in L.A. while Kid Rock wanted to stay in his hometown of Detroit. Some say that Kid Rock didn't like it when Anderson insulted his mother and sister in front of his son. And some say she was turned off when he went ballistic over her abduction scene in Borat.

Janet Jackson and James DeBarge

Length Of Marriage: 121 days

The two had been childhood friends; Janet reportedly proposed and they eloped on September 7, 1984. By the first week of January it was all over, and the marriage was annulled a few months later.

Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley

Length Of Marriage: 107 days

Elvis's baby girl already had a history of questionable marriage decisions, having tied the knot with Michael Jackson in 1994 just 20 days after finalizing her divorce from Danny Keough. Cage is known to be an Elvis fan, which makes the idea of marrying into the family a little creepy to begin with; he and Lisa Marie were married August 10, 2002 after a 10-day engagement. The divorce proceedings lasted 18 months—much longer than their marriage, but short of the 20 months she was married to Jackson.

R. Kelly and Aaliyah

Length Of Marriage: 90 days

On August 31, 1994, Aaliyah married Kelly, her producer and mentor. The marriage certificate said she was 18, which was not true and fairly dumb as Aaliyah's successful debut album, titled (ahem) Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, had been released in June and her age, 15, was widely known. Vibe magazine obtained the marriage certificate and broke the story; Aaliyah's parents took action to have the marriage annulled.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

Length Of Marriage: 72 days

The $10 million pricetag on their wedding (October 31, 2011) included $6,000 in cakes, $10,000 in wedding invitations, and a $50,000 facelift for Kris Jenner. It's said that TV's wiliest reality stars actually made money on the day, thanks to checks from TV networks and magazines for rights to coverage and venues for the privilege of hosting. Oh yeah, there was a guy involved in this as well: NBA player Kris Humphries, who responded to Kim's request for divorce with a request for annulment and allegations of fraud. Hey, sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Pamela Anderson and Rick Salomon

Length Of Marriage: 68 days

The couple was wed on October 6, 2007, between the seven and 10 p.m. showings of Hans Klok's The Beauty of Magic at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas, which was necessary because Anderson was performing in the show as a magician's assistant at the time. Anderson cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce filing, then the couple looked like they might reconcile. But that fell apart and both sought an annulment, accusing the other of fraud.

Chris Kattan and Sunshine Tutt

Length Of Marriage: 59 days

When this model married the SNL veteran in 2008, he reportedly had a prenup that limited her payout to less than $10,000. But it was nothing a little lawyering couldn't fix. After legal proceedings, her take was in the low six figures.

Chad Johnson and Evelyn Lozada

Length Of Marriage: 41 days

Johnson, famously known as Ochocinco, and Lozada were married on July 4, 2012. It was a match made-for-TV; Chad had courted Evelyn while she was on Basketball Wives, and they were to star in a spinoff series, Ev & Ocho, coming to VH-1 September 7. Or... not. On the night of Saturday, August 11, Ev & Ocho got into an argument and he allegedly head-butted her. VH-1 decided they were no longer interested in the series, and Ochocinco lost his job with the Miami Dolphins. Given those two factors, celebrity oddsmakers felt the publicity-driven Lozada (who'd earned a reputation as a brawler on Basketball Wives) would file for divorce, and she did, on Tuesday, August 14.

Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman

Length Of Marriage: 32 days

Kids may not know who Ethel Merman was, but she sang corny old songs in a big voice and looked about how you think an Ethel Merman would look. Borgnine was goofy looking too, but he was George Clooney in comparison.

Drew Barrymore and Jeremy Thomas

Length Of Marriage: 29 days

Drew was barely 19 when she married L.A. bar owner Thomas. Kudos to her for waiting. She'd already been engaged twice—to singer Jamie Walters when she was 17 and to Leland Hayward when she was 16. You can get engaged at 16?

Mario Lopez and Ali Landry

Length Of Marriage: 18 days

Let this be a lesson to you, ladies: Be careful if your boyfriend is prettier than you. Former Miss USA Landry met Lopez at the Miss Teen USA pageant in 1998 when she was a celebrity judge and he was emcee. They started dating and were together for six years before their 2004 wedding. The marriage fell apart almost immediately when it came out that Lopez had allegedly cheated on Landry multiple times.

Sinead O'Connor and Barry Herridge

Length Of Marriage: 16 days

If you're the unmistakable bald-headed Sinead O'Connor, you can't exactly set up a profile on Match.com if you're looking for love. Instead, she posted something like a personal ad on her blog, requesting a man and life-partner who was "no younger than 44 ... Must not be named Brian or Nigel ... Must be blind enough to think I’m gorgeous."

Herridge, an addiction counselor for children, seemed to fit the bill, though he was perturbed when Sinead insisted on tracking down some doobage on their wedding night. Sinead also blamed Herridge's "inner circle" for subverting the marriage before the reception had even ended. The couple went on a honeymoon, then lived together for a week before announcing they were calling it quits.

Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds

Length Of Marriage: 15 days

The couple were married in Bora Bora, which is not legally valid in the United States, but planned to have an official ceremony stateside. Two weeks after the intimate island nuptials, they released a statement to People: "After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further. While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”

Cher and Gregg Allman

Length Of Marriage: 9 days

Cher and Allman married in 1975, less than a week after her divorce from Sonny Bono became final. In reality, the couple had been together for months, and both Sonny and Cher had been dating other people for the final few years of their marriage. But nine days after Cher and Gregg's spontaneous nuptials in a Las Vegas hotel room, she filed for divorce.

Although this debacle is often cited as a classic short-lived celebrity marriage, it wasn't, really. Cher rescinded her divorce request, and she and Allman stayed together until 1979. The marriage yielded a son, Elijah Blue Allman, and an album, Two the Hard Way (by Allman and Woman), which is considered the worst thing either of them released in their musical careers.

Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra

Length Of Marriage: 9 days

In 1998, Dennis Rodman's life was a public circus. Although still a monster on the boards, he was wearing ladies' clothing, dyeing his hair every color of the rainbow, dabbling in professional wrestling, partying every night, and trying to sell an autobiography, Bad As I Wanna Be.

Meanwhile, Electra was having a terrible year. While trying to launch a screen career other than Playboy Home Video, her mother and sister died within two weeks in August. She reportedly knew The Worm was The One when he flooded her apartment with flowers. When the two tied the knot at a chapel in Vegas, there was little doubt this was a combination publicity stunt and cry for help.

Catherine Oxenberg and Robert Evans

Length Of Marriage: 9 days

The movie producer's 1998 union with Dynasty actress Oxenberg was brief, but this is a man who seems to have a policy of not keeping them around for long. He's been married seven times, never for longer than three years.

Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips

Length Of Marriage: 9 days

Details are hazy on this one, in keeping with the haziness of Hopper's life circa 1970. Hopper was a whirlwind of free love, public nudity, heavy drug use, and occasional acting. Apparently, Phillips (who was in The Mamas & the Papas) and Hopper quickly married after a random visit to his Taos compound. An account in the UK's Daily Mail says they divorced because of Hopper's "unnatural sexual demands."

Britney Spears and Jason Alexander

Length Of Marriage: 55 hours

In all honesty, this comedy of errors in Las Vegas with her childhood friend might only be Britney's second-worst marriage of 2004, as the other was to Kevin Federline.

Robin Givens and Syetozar Marinkovic

Length Of Marriage: 1 day

Tennis instructors have some strange mojo. When a high society lady has a secret romance, the dude with the racket and ball machine is usually the first suspect. In 1997, though, Givens was eight years removed from her divorce from Mike Tyson. The tennis instructor mojo was good enough for the nuptials, but couldn't sustain the marriage beyond a day.

Zsa Zsa Gabor and Felipe de Alba

Length Of Marriage: 1 day

Zsa Zsa Gabor was, in terms of career numbers, arguably the champion over Liz Taylor in the celebrity marriage derby. Both had nine marriages, but Taylor married the same guy (Richard Burton) twice. However, you could say this one-day union of Gabor's didn't count, as she was still, technically, married to Michael O'Hara when in 1983 she tied the knot with Felipe. It was annulled almost immediately.

Rudolph Valentino and Jean Acker

Length Of Marriage: 6 hours

Although the marriage is said to have lasted just a few hours—from ceremony to reception's end, with Acker then locking Valentino out of the honeymoon suite—in truth, it continued for months afterward, at least in Rudy's opinion. He sent her letters asking for forgiveness for whatever he'd done, and expressing the desire to live as man and wife. Eventually, he did get the message and their separtion was followed by a divorce. Why would Acker not want to be the wife of Valentino, who was about to become the most dashing film star in all of Hollywood? They say it's because she was a lesbian involved in a girl-girl-girl love triangle, and the wedding was a ruse she used to get out. Oh, that'll do it.
