Something doesn't sit right with me about a straight male doing so many gay projects like this. It'd be different if he was doing something that directly benefits the gay community, but idk. It's not his culture.

I could be wrong but it's like he's trying to be the ultimate hipster.

Like he thinks he's being edgy by doing projects about male homosexuality (cause lesbians wouldn't be interesting enough for him). He's trying to create a persona of daring and Andy Warholness by showing homosexuality through sex scenes.
But really all he's doing is creating a negative and incredibly closeminded portrayal of gay culture in the US.

I don't think Franco really took to heart what that film was really about and why it was protested so vehemently. If you ask me, this is just another excuse for him to shoot naked men. He loves doing that. LOVES IT.

And heaven knows what he's doing in front of the camera.

it's about a serial killer in New York City targeting gay men and al pacino is an undercover cop that monitors the gay scene/hot spots trying to figure out who it is. it could be seen as a metaphor for AIDS, considering the time period it was made in, and i believe people protested because of the explicit scenes in the gay bars, but i could be wrong.

It's interesting not only to question James' motives, but also the reactions to them. A straight guy who by all accounts is so in love with gay culture but is missing the one thing that could connect him to it: attraction to the same sex. It's like he's yearning to have that, but since he doesn't (allegedly) he shows us what he finds interesting about it to him.

Exploitative? Sure, but it's an exploit of his curiosity, I don't think it's very damaging. My interest in gay guys came when I was less than 12 and I'm still fascinated. There's just something internal that clicks when dudes love up on each other. If I had the money/talent/bravery I would be exploiting the crap out out of them too, but like, with real stories, and more features to show what GAY actually is.

I don't know, I get him, I like him, and more power to him.

ps. I'm a straight black girl, heh.
