Dr. Drew makes light of his ‘exercise bulimia’

2-dr-drew-art-g5rio0v5-12-tv-dr-drew

Dr. Drew Pinsky recently admitted on CNN to exercising obsessively to stay slim — a condition not technically a mental disorder but what some people call “exercise bulimia.”

He joked about his condition: “A little whiff of a mental-health issue never hurt anybody.”

Doctors at the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt in Baltimore said they found the comment disturbing. Calling exercise bulimia a “mild” mental-health disorder sends the wrong message, they said.

Something that might seem minor could be indicative of a full-blown eating disorder or the first signs of one. Such disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, according to Sheppard Pratt. Without treatment, 5 to 20 percent of people with eating disorders might die of complications related to their illness.

“It’s particularly concerning to see high-profile medical professionals, in this case an internist, minimizing what is a very serious disorder for a lot of people,” center director Harry Brandt said.

“Statements like Dr. Drew’s trivialize a dangerous behavior and, unfortunately, make it more difficult for individuals to justify getting help.”

Someone needs to vomit all over Drew's face.
magwildwood 17th-Aug-2012 11:32 pm (UTC)
well yeah, he's obnoxious
vanishingbee 17th-Aug-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
it's always bad news with when ontd deals with someone calling themselves a doctor

except dr dre of course
xfdryad 18th-Aug-2012 12:09 am (UTC)
Aaaaaaaaaaaand you win!
msloserrific 18th-Aug-2012 03:41 am (UTC)
lmao
turnyourankle 18th-Aug-2012 02:07 pm (UTC)
he is a doctor though.

not a psychologist, however, which explains a lot of his stupid comments.
unbirthdayalice 17th-Aug-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
ugh. it kind of reminds me of this girl in my psych class, when we were on the eating disorder unit. she made some stupid joke about how she's a girl, so she probably has a few symptoms of bulimia. i hate how so many people trivialize eating disorders.
cityxpretty 17th-Aug-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
I remember everyone was diagnosing themselves in pysch class in high school.
jane_wanderlust 18th-Aug-2012 12:01 am (UTC)
perfect icon choice for this statement.

anyone who jokes about eating disorders gets the biggest side-eye and/or personalized comment from me
burningpumpkins 18th-Aug-2012 10:17 am (UTC)
she's just trying to justify her eating disorder, kind of like how an alcoholic justifies or normalizes his/her alcoholism... i used to target those people (as an ED person myself) and they all turned out to have eating disorders
leviicorpus 17th-Aug-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
mte. Dr Drew makes a lot of dumb comments, but this isn't one of them.
drakefn 18th-Aug-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
Exactly! There are "mild" cases of eating disorders and such... he in no way said that exercise bulimia was mild, he was commenting on his specific case. People need to chill.
isntdaveone 17th-Aug-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
he's a 34.
swissbeauty23 18th-Aug-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
so this is for the narcissism test right?

i'm reading these questions right now and they're annoying me. having self-confidence and feeding yourself positive things to get by and feel motivated is different from being narcissistic.
swissbeauty23 18th-Aug-2012 01:29 am (UTC)
i just took it and got an 8 lol welp
lillylilacs 18th-Aug-2012 02:51 am (UTC)
lol I just took the narcissism test and scored embarrassingly high, but I really don't think I am any more narcissistic than average.
msloserrific 18th-Aug-2012 03:42 am (UTC)
Where is the test? Did you take this one?

remember when he got into a fight with Robin!?!

reidacted 18th-Aug-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
I'm almost 30 minutes in and I haven't seen it yet. The suspense is killing me.
evett 18th-Aug-2012 01:09 am (UTC)
I stil think Robin is higher than a 34
swissbeauty23 18th-Aug-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
i don't agree with his narcissism test tbh, it's WAY too cut and dry and most people aren't that simplistic in their thinking.

i cycle between a lot of those thoughts depending on my mood or what my life situation is.

where do you draw the line between confidence and narcissism?

i thought way too much about this lol
hater_traitor 17th-Aug-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
If you go on TV all the time and are not an actor, then I hate you.

He's the worst. This Dr. Phil-esque asshole...
deja_vu822 17th-Aug-2012 11:39 pm (UTC)
when even "doctors" can't take eating disorders seriously, it makes me really believe they will never be a time they aren't misrepresented or laughed about.
flaca 17th-Aug-2012 11:43 pm (UTC)
it's really alarming. i've come to expect it by now. the worst is when it comes from a doctor specializing in EDs .... like, what.
ohramone 18th-Aug-2012 12:26 am (UTC)
Ugh I know, when I was 15 and bulimic,my mum forced me to go to my GP and the GP sent me away saying "well you don't look underweight".
deja_vu822 18th-Aug-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
something similar happened to me too. my last counselor told me "well you're not underweight yet but if you want to keep it up, you can talk to me when you're admitted to the psych ward i work at"
burningpumpkins 18th-Aug-2012 10:33 am (UTC)
If your ED is affecting your life, you don't need an official diagnosis from a GP to tell you to change your eating habits or seek psychological counsel. The definition of an ED in the DSM requires an unusually low BMI, but like a person on the verge of being a full-blown, dysfunctional alcoholic, it would be awkward to go to the GP and ask 'do I have a problem'? It might be nice to seek validation or acknowledgement of not simply weakness in character, I definitely had that feeling, but ultimately a psychiatrist would be a better place to go to -- that is, if you were really willing to change.
shadyoutkast 17th-Aug-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
i really hope they don't do anymore episodes of "celebrity rehab". dr. drew's track record isn't that great since a good amount of celebs he has "helped" are dead.
sugary_placenta 17th-Aug-2012 11:43 pm (UTC)
to be fair, i'm sure this happens to every rehab.
shadyoutkast 17th-Aug-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
yeah. i know. i'm just being extra dickish because i don't like dr. drew.
karrixftw 17th-Aug-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
it really does. i'm not saying dr drew or his program are legit or whatever, because i don't really know, but relapse is a very real thing. my parents both went to rehab and my dad relapsed/died and basically every addict my mom knows is now either dead or in jail so...
sugary_placenta 17th-Aug-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
He's so annoying. I can't believe I used to listen to Loveline religiously as a teenager (although it did teach me about masturbation so it wasn't a total loss).
deja_vu822 17th-Aug-2012 11:44 pm (UTC)
i swear he's like a totally different person on Loveline than he is on TV. or he used to be, i don't listen to Loveline anymore either

Still playing a teenager in 2012, on Pretty Little Liars.

smg doesn't either
it's freakish

although i'm 24 and people think i'm 14 so apparently i'm part of the freakishness

esoteriq 17th-Aug-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
When did he get to be such a tool? Loveline was my shit. Does anyone remember the guy who saved a stripper's pubic hair for cloning purposes?
im_chris_hansen 17th-Aug-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
i dunno about those stats though. 5-20% is a large spread to be quoting if you're not sure.

i'd guess that other mental disorders, like depression, would have a higher mortality rate.
yououghtaknow 17th-Aug-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
No ED's have the highest mortality rate still I believe

http://www.state.sc.us/dmh/anorexia/statistics.htm
flaca 17th-Aug-2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
no, those stats are right. the figure is mostly people with anorexia. ~10% of anorectics die with 10 years of diagnosis and then it goes up to 20% after the next 10 years.

mortality rate for people with depression is pretty low, actually, around 6%, i believe.
