Mattel Annouces Drag Queen Barbie

2_3

Barbie has been around for quite some time now, so it's only right that she begin to evolve a little, but by no means did we expect her to change into a drag queen!

Mattel has announced plans to produce their first ever Drag Queen Barbie in collaboration with the New York City-based design duo The Blonds, who are responsible for dressing some of the biggest names around, including Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez.

The gender bender doll called ‘The Blonds Blond Diamond Barbie Doll’ doesn't come equipped with detachable lady parts or a Ken bump, it is simply a regular Barb that takes after the cross dressing Phillipe Blond of the NYC design duo, and we think it is pretty darn fab.

The drag queen doll is dressed in a diamond encrusted mini dress with a floor sweeping faux fur coat (take note!) glitter pumps and over the top makeup.

The doll is set to hit the shelves just in time for Christmas. Don't end up on Santa's naughty list, because this Barbie costs a pretty penny at $125.

Uh... So, have they changed the ridiculous dimensions for the doll on this release, or...? Just... wtf.
kimoto 17th-Aug-2012 10:47 pm (UTC)
To me they look even more ridiculous for this barbie.
lovelylaura23 17th-Aug-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
It looks like 65% of it is legs. D:
kitsune17 18th-Aug-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
They changed the dimensions a while ago. At least on some of them, if not all of them. Most of my daughter's Barbies have smaller boobs, a wider waist, and smal...actually, I think the hips are the same as the Barbies I had growing up.
vonlisbon 19th-Aug-2012 02:38 pm (UTC)
Ditto kitsune's comment.

danicka 17th-Aug-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
amazing how they have better legs even when they're barbie dolls!

What I'm getting here is that Mattel thinks drag queens are ... girls who wear a lot of makeup and flashy outfits?

What they should've done was make KEN out as Drag Queen Barbie..
redlipped 17th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
You have admit this is a HUGE step though! In the right direction. Since barbie is so iconic and the epitome of our culture (unfortunately). So seeing this is a huge leap toward acceptance of gender identity and sexual preference... well, that is, if it catches on.
crup 17th-Aug-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
in theory it's a huge step, but the execution is kinda backwards :/ it's sticking within the gender roles that society already considers 'normal' rather than working towards breaking those gender roles down.
lovelylaura23 17th-Aug-2012 10:48 pm (UTC)
I only had one Barbie as a kid and it was the ~*~Millennium Barbie. I never played with it much. I was more into Beanie Babies, Polly Pockets and Betty Spaghetti.
secretivexhero 17th-Aug-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
polly pockets were my world
gee 17th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
I loved barbie but omg polly pocket. I had soooo many. I still get mad when I see them in the store and they are big now lol.
hope_remains 17th-Aug-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
I know! So kids wont choke on them or some shit, right? UGH
swim_thedepths 17th-Aug-2012 11:07 pm (UTC)
Gawd, I loved Polly Pocket. My friend and I collected them and would connect our houses together.
microminiscrew 18th-Aug-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
Yes! I did notice all the PP dolls seem to be more like bratz now. wtf? If it's not small it's not PP. That was the point.
thetrustoryofme 17th-Aug-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
nano babies too.

lady_cosmo 18th-Aug-2012 02:43 am (UTC)
I owned the 1996 Olympic Gymnast Barbie. That was until I dyed her hair red with cough medicine and gave her a buzz cut lol. I hated Barbie!
moodring54 18th-Aug-2012 12:36 pm (UTC)
My parents told me I couldn't open my Millennium Barbie because it was a collector's item. It's going for about 10 bucks on ebay now.
