Spike Lee To Premiere Michael Jackson Documentary 'BAD 25' At Venice Film Festival (Aug. 31)

Spike Lee will be premiering his Michael Jackson documentary, BAD 25, on August 31st at the 2012 Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy, according to reports.

"I’m more than just a huge fan of Michael Jackson," Lee said in a press statement. "Having the chance to actually know him and work with him, I deeply care about his legacy."

BAD 25 was collaboratively created by Lee, as well as both the Jackson Estate and Sony Music, and is said to focus entirely on Jackson’s iconic album and the world tour that accompanied it.

Martin Scorsese (who directed the video for BAD), engineer Matt Forger, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, former CBS head Walter Yetnikoff, choreographers Jeffrey Daniel and Vincent Paterson, former Epic manager Larry Stessel, drummers John Robinson and Ollie E. Brown, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Sheryl Crow are among those interviewed for the film.

"We have footage in this documentary that no one's ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff," Lee told SF Gate in July. "We had complete access to the vaults of Michael Jackson. ... He wrote 60 demos for the BAD record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience."

He also added: "You don't have to be a Michael Jackson-head to enjoy this."

The BAD documentary will also be screened in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, as part of the Special Presentations screenings at TIFF.

Lee said that negotiations are currently taking place for an eventual TV broadcast of the film -- with a holiday DVD release planned for the end of the year.

BAD, the third and final album collaboration for Jackson and Quincy Jones, was #1 around the world, made history with five consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard chart, produced ten chart-topping singles, was nominated for six Grammys and won two, and to date, has sold over 45 million units.

Spike Lee's film supports the 25th anniversary of BAD, which will also be celebrated with the September 18th release of BAD 25, a deluxe package featuring three CDs and two collectible booklets. The package also includes the first-ever authorized DVD release of a concert from Jackson's record-breaking 1988 concert at Wembley Stadium, which was attended by Princess Diana, Prince Charles and a sold-out crowd of 72,000 fans.

A BAD 25 two-CD standard edition, featuring the original album plus the CD of demos and new remixes, will also be made available as will a stand alone edition of the DVD and a picture disc of the original album.

The Venice Film Festival runs from August 29 to September 8.
