Lemony Snicket responds to Lauren Conrad's video.

In case you haven’t been following the literary police blotter today, here’s an update. Book-lovers around the web were shocked to see video footage of The Hills-star-turned-craft-maven Lauren Conrad brazenly dismembering a set of lovely hardcover volumes, using their spines in the unholy creation of something she gleefully called a “unique storage space” (storage for what, we shudder to think).

When book advocates rose up in protest of the gruesome atrocity, Conrad responded by removing the episode of her DIY crafting show from YouTube. But luckily the sleuths over at BuzzFeed (who originally broke the story), managed to preserve the image above.

You will notice that the book being savaged is from the Series of Unfortunate Events saga by Lemony Snicket. We reached out to the elusive author through his publicist, and he responded with the following comment:

It has always been my belief that people who spend too much time with my work end up as lost souls, drained of reason, who lead lives of raving emptiness and occasional lunatic violence. What a relief it is to see this documented.

Snicket may be relieved, but to our mind, this brutal event was unfortunate, indeed.

The same thing could have been made if she'd have had a decent printer. her books and idc but i still think it's a tacky ass project. but then most of her arts and crafts stuff is pretty tacky.

Statements like these are why I love Lemony Snicket! He's just as off the wall in person as he is in this statement, trust me.

have you met him>@

I met him in June at Book Expo America (a publishing industry convention in NYC). He was a riot! He even signed my first edition copy of The Bad Beginning even though he was there to promote his new novel.

Ha ha, I hadn't seen this before, what a horrible thing to do to lovely books though :/

I wish celebrities would grow some balls. She should have left the video up and added a "Seriously? Get the fuck over it" caption.

There was a Laguna Beach marathon on mtv today and watched most of it and Lauren is sf pretty. Like, I knew she was decent looking, but she's actually super pretty and I guess I forgot.

I can see why some people might be upset, maybe in the US these books can be found anywhere, but here in Mexico they stopped selling them after the 6th one and it crushed me, a friend and I had to save a lot of money to ship the rest from the US. She has half of them, and I have the other half, I would love to have the complete series, but it's kind of impossible for me, I would have to dropped a lot of money that I don't have atm, so yeah it's a little sad to see those books I have wanted to own for years ending like that

LMAO such a good response, I love it.
cozmic_oceanz 17th-Aug-2012 05:48 am (UTC)
ugh come on what's the big deal. I am obsessed with literature, books (the physical entities!), and creative writing....if I were Lemony Snicket I wouldn't have given a damn. It's a cool idea.

Lol I don't understand why people get so worked up about this.

I made a bag out of a book before and that was fun.

I also work in a book store and we destroy books when we send them back to the publisher by ripping the covers off.
treebraids 17th-Aug-2012 05:53 am (UTC)
Since i was a kid, I've always hated when people rip up books. I dont care how uncool that makes me. If you want fake books, buy them and give the ones you are sick of to charity.
vervain 17th-Aug-2012 06:01 am (UTC)
idk i used to think that way but then i came to work a book shop, we do that thing where if we get stock that doesn't sell we rip off the covers and keep them then you send the covers back to the publisher so they can count how many were unsold. we just throw the non-covered books out because you can't resell them.
mjspice 17th-Aug-2012 08:19 am (UTC)
This! I consider is blasphemy whenever I see a ripped up book.
mothflavour 18th-Aug-2012 02:48 am (UTC)
Sorry, but I'm never going to stop smoking bible joints.
justyourfaceha 17th-Aug-2012 06:59 am (UTC)
That comment is a tad harsh. I mean I hate ruining books and could never cut them up but to each their own. If Lauren wants to make crafts out of hardcover novels then so be it.
mothflavour 18th-Aug-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
You probably don't know these books? Basically, it's a joke.
no_x_doubts 17th-Aug-2012 07:08 am (UTC)
YESS i love Lemony Snicket!! a+ response
