Nike Gold Digging Shirt: Funny Or Offensive?

When Adidas had their "shackle" sneaker scandal this summer, we figured that the sportswear industry might tread with caution when putting out riskier products. But it looks like Nike had no qualms about keeping this note-worthy top on the shelves: a women's t-shirt displaying the words "Gold Digging."

We don't like to be super sensitive about these things, but something about this seems... off. The t-shirt features metallic gold lettering and Nike's signature check logo and is only available for women (because women presumably love to be called gold diggers). But we can't help but wonder if some ladies will be less than pleased with this kind of depiction.

sometimes i think ontd has made me *~less~~~* feminist

some of yall make mountains out of the tiniest fucking molehills and it detracts from real feminist issues
helders 14th-Aug-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
people have different ideas about what is feminist. just b/c you don't find an issue to be "a real feminist issue" doesn't mean someone else doesn't. feminism is whatever a person chooses to make it, we don't all have to agree on the same thing.
poisoned_summer 14th-Aug-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
real feminist issues are equal pay, equal representation in government and business, a feminist legal system and shit like healthcare

this is not. there are always going to be differences between the sexes and how society perceives them
bluepassiflora 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
Please enlighten me on the things I'm allowed to care about as a woman.
whitegirlthin 14th-Aug-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
some of yall make mountains out of the tiniest fucking molehills

Exactly. They get off on bitching and moaning, or it makes them feel special and alive.

I love this comment

somebody yesterday summed up ONTD in a nutshell

http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/71105498.html?thread=12520828890#t12520828890

i feel like ONTD 2.0 has its own version of Rule 34…if it exists, there IS feminism wank about it.

demonsandsongs 14th-Aug-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't really call striking a few keys and clicking a mouse is making a mountain out of a molehill. No one's marching to parliament about this t-shirt but people are allowed to discuss how it could be an issue/whether it merits further discussion.
anchors_oceans 14th-Aug-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
i feel the exact same way. and lol that reminds me of a girl that yelled (and i mean YELLED) at me in class because i said i wanted a bad ass producing career but still wanted to make dinner for my family because that would make me happy. she was like YOU NEED TO CARE ABOUT YOURSELF MORE. WOMEN SHOULD MAKE MORE MONEY THAN MEN. MEN ARE SCUM. I'M A FEMINIST. and i was like "girl, you're not a feminist. last time i checked, real feminists want equal political, economic, and social rights for women. not to destroy men." she was so pissed off.
mikachanyo 14th-Aug-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
rolling my eyes left and right at you and the people that agreed. your way of thinking is part of the problem.
vampireweekend 15th-Aug-2012 12:41 am (UTC)
real issues?

every fucking issue whether it big or small is something that needs to be focused on. the fact that society views both genders as different IS an issue that needs to be dealt with.

who are you to say what i can and can't care about as a feminist. fuck you.
dirtyknife 15th-Aug-2012 01:47 am (UTC)
LBR, you weren't much of a feminist to begin with if this is truly your attitude. We can care about the "real feminist issues" and also point out the lesser crimes when we see them. It's all a part of the same bullshit system.
helders 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
people saying people are "overreacting" or "trying to make something out of nothing" should really get better at looking at subtext. the shirt wouldn't be offensive if it was available to men and women, but the fact that it only comes in women sizes makes it less about, "get those gold medals!!!" and turns the connotation into a more negative one about women being gold diggers in society. i guess in the end people can look at the shirt however they want, but ppl who see between the lines aren't making shit up, either. imo.
pamelalillian 14th-Aug-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
hmm i see what you are saying with it being only in women sizes
crystalzelda 14th-Aug-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
exactly. People who find it offensive aren't "reaching" or imagining issues that aren't there - they're reading the existing subtext which they might find problematic, and that's totally fair if they do.

I mean it's great that ONTD doesn't think that women who marry for money is a bad thing but yeah, being called a gold digger isn't exactly a compliment in most situations. I don't think it's HUGE issue or incredibly offensive, but I can totally understand athletes and women who'd be pretty displeased with the slogan.
hotcement 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
this article mentions nothing about the olympics and there aren't even olympic rings on the shirt. thus i find this offensive and dumb as fuck. i didn't even make the connection until i read the first few comments of this post.
guccipostagurl 14th-Aug-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
not all of nike's olympic gear have the rings on them
anchors_oceans 14th-Aug-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
tbh olympic gold was the first thing i thought of. i think it's wrong that it's only available to women, that definitely says something, but i still like it so i'll probably buy it. :/
ponpiri 15th-Aug-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
Yeah but Nike doesn't make graphic tees for teenagers. It's a sporting company and the Olympics just ended. The real issue for me is that they were being tongue in cheek about the word gold digger, but didn't include the men.
hellotreetops 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)

seriously. my dad's new girlfriend that he met on the internet AND THEN MOVED IN WITH 1 MONTH LATER (she got the house from her third ex-husband) is draining my father's account dry. now she's the one that gets everything in his will and he said when he dies, his girlfriend will give me "an allowance." the fuck? i'm 22 years old and his only child.

sorry, had to vent, but that bitch needs to go.
hellotreetops 14th-Aug-2012 11:14 pm (UTC)
Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, bb. Yeah, my dad's wife has pretty much pushed both myself and my sister out of my dad's life, and meets with lawyers monthly to have everything arranged on what she will get out of the marriage if they divorce or if he dies. I am trying so hard not to beat the living shit out of her. My dad has a heart condition and youdamnwellknow she makes sure he uses extra butter and cooks him steak every night.
pamelalillian 14th-Aug-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
wat

sounds like my father in the sense of not making provision for his kid over his woman. geez wtf kind of thinking is this.
fwee_prower 14th-Aug-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
ok you need to talk to your dad about that gold digging ho
ponpiri 15th-Aug-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
Woah and I thought my dad's situation is bad. He just has a money grubbing gf who happens to be nuts.
heyx_lyla 15th-Aug-2012 03:03 am (UTC)
JFC, that's awful!

Bitch needs to kick rocks but until then, if you need tips on changing someones will without them knowing and then tricking them into signing it, some of my family members could help you out with that.
rubyboots 14th-Aug-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
I just don't find myself insulted by this tbh. So there's a t-shirt out there with a less than desirable label for women on it? OK. I mean I'd side eye women who actually WEAR it but other than that idc.

whitegirlthin 14th-Aug-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)

LOL offensive? Seriously?? Who feels offended by that shirt? I wonder what type of person would cry offense over this...

Typical, right? ;p
brianistuft 14th-Aug-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
I think this is funny. It takes something that a woman is called whenever she dates above her tax bracket and makes it positive. Taking gold digger from money hungry to success hungry. Like the woman wearing this shirt is plotting, schemeing, fantasizing and will not stop until she has won the gold and glory.
guccipostagurl 14th-Aug-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
that's exactly how i see it as well, turning something negative to something empowering.

exactly, nike does this all the time
mattthew 14th-Aug-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
it's a nonissue. it's taking something that is socially taboo and making it empowering. why wouldn't a woman want to be a gold digger when it comes to sports and fitness? get that gold.

If I saw a male gold medal winner with this I'd lol, but like everyone's noted, it's targeted at women. :\
microminiscrew 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
What is it even trying to say? With these things there tends to be a pun involved however crappy the pun may be. No and no.
mattthew 14th-Aug-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
imo it's taking something that is socially taboo and making it empowering. why wouldn't a woman want to be a gold digger when it comes to sports and fitness? get that gold.
fraubluecher 15th-Aug-2012 12:21 am (UTC)
You really don't get it? Have you not read any replies? Gold digging = going for gold at the olympics, which is not what gold digging usually implies. Pretty clear pun, no?
crucified 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
It's stupid either way.
guccipostagurl 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
I think i remember one of the girls from USWNT tweeting before the gold medal match that they were gonna be "gold digging" if the athletes don't care, why should we?

I personally think its funny and is just a play on words. No need for unnecessary controversy.
mattthew 14th-Aug-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
that's too much to ask of ontd/the internet tho
bluepassiflora 14th-Aug-2012 11:22 pm (UTC)
When you are an Olympic athlete going for gold, sure, use that phrase. This shirt isn't just for elite athletes.

There is need for unnecessary controversy. Not to mention a need to call out a bad pun.

Why isn't the shirt made in men's sizes?
foreverxromance 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
