Nike Gold Digging Shirt: Funny Or Offensive?

When Adidas had their "shackle" sneaker scandal this summer, we figured that the sportswear industry might tread with caution when putting out riskier products. But it looks like Nike had no qualms about keeping this note-worthy top on the shelves: a women's t-shirt displaying the words "Gold Digging."

We don't like to be super sensitive about these things, but something about this seems... off. The t-shirt features metallic gold lettering and Nike's signature check logo and is only available for women (because women presumably love to be called gold diggers). But we can't help but wonder if some ladies will be less than pleased with this kind of depiction.

foreverxromance 14th-Aug-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
why would you even want to wear this shirt?
foreverxromance 14th-Aug-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
oop @ me. i didn't realize it was an olympics reference
false_hate 14th-Aug-2012 11:07 pm (UTC)
This is my fault, I should've included the Olympic references.
bestieverhad112 15th-Aug-2012 12:02 am (UTC)
i would LOVE to wear this shirt. lol.

just to see peoples reaction to it.
i got the olympic reference right off the bat, but can you imagine running in it? hahhahahaha!
cricketgrl 15th-Aug-2012 12:05 am (UTC)
I don't see anything so offensive about it.

I wouldn't wear it myself but I don't see anything wrong with it because it's unisex.
kimberwyn 15th-Aug-2012 12:20 am (UTC)
Probably the same women who wear pants with crystalized words across the butt, babyphat logos and lv handbags.
vanishingbee 14th-Aug-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
I thought the shirt was about the Olympics.
fromyourashes 14th-Aug-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
Same. People are pressed about everything lately, even shit that didn't happen.
vivilicious 14th-Aug-2012 11:45 pm (UTC)
this! it's like people walk around, actively looking for stuff to take offense at. And anything will do!
helders 14th-Aug-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
that would've been a good connection to make, but the fact that it's only available to women throws me off.
atomicdogmeat 14th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
You don't dig for a gold medal though.
hotcement 14th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
see, i didn't even realize that. maybe if it had the rings somewhere on it...
bluepassiflora 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
Why is it only a women's shirt, then?
bizzycakes 14th-Aug-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
Okay I kind of like it then haha. I would wear it ironically since I'm already married in general though.
nene718 14th-Aug-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
I think it is. There's a pic of Allyson Felix wearing it.
foreverxromance 14th-Aug-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
see i didn't think about it that way. they should've made it more obvious tbh
cherrybombx 14th-Aug-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
i think it's a double meaning, like women reclaiming the term to turn it into something positive ("going for the gold").
brucelynn 14th-Aug-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
It is
krycek_chick 14th-Aug-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
I thought Olympics, too.

mte
abiding 15th-Aug-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
I thought the same, although the fact that it's only for women is bizarre if it is about the Olympics.
kimberwyn 15th-Aug-2012 12:21 am (UTC)
It's obviously a double-entendre...
thenylonkid 15th-Aug-2012 02:18 am (UTC)
hello it's only for women
atomicdogmeat 14th-Aug-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
It'd be fine if they made it for both genders.
aleisha_xo 14th-Aug-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
mte... they can't really play it off too much since it's only for women...
crystalzelda 14th-Aug-2012 11:17 pm (UTC)
yeah exactly
bishieaddict 15th-Aug-2012 04:58 am (UTC)
I think it would even funnier if a guy wore it cuz it would be the opposite of stereotype.
piscesvstaurus 16th-Aug-2012 02:44 am (UTC)
As a guy, I would wear it.
fromyourashes 14th-Aug-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
Honestly, my first thought was "Olympic Gold Medal Digging," not money grubbing bitch on the prowl.
anchors_oceans 14th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
same. i like the slogan, just not that it's only for females. :/
fromyourashes 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
:/ Maybe they'll come up with one for men and our optimism won't be in vain, lol.
kamikashi 14th-Aug-2012 10:53 pm (UTC)
i think the nike shirt is referencing gold medal digging, but because they only made it for women it then goes onto the stereotype that women are gold diggers looking just for money.
atomicdogmeat 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
"Olympic Gold Medal Digging,"

Is that a thing?
kamikashi 14th-Aug-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
us women did bring home more gold than men... but they should have made it for anyone and not just women.
helders 14th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
agree
anchors_oceans 14th-Aug-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
USA women's soccer won gold. USA men didn't qualify.

GET IT GIRLS. but it wouldn't be that hard to offer it in everyone's size lol. i wonder who made that call.
guccipostagurl 14th-Aug-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
USA men suck. Don't get me started on those assholes
ponpiri 15th-Aug-2012 12:23 am (UTC)
Ooh do you know what happened to Japan's womens' soccer team? I remember they had to fly in coach while the men had business class, and some authority figure said the women had to earn their keep basically
vanishingbee 14th-Aug-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
I legit cared about zero men's events this Olympics, lol.
noon 14th-Aug-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
the fact that this only comes in women's sizes answers the question tbh

indeed.

forthe_asking Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?14th-Aug-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
No, I would consider myself a failure if I wasn't financially self-sufficient. It's a value I place on myself though. I don't judge others who would.
xtinkerbellax Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?14th-Aug-2012 11:07 pm (UTC)
Sure, but we'd have to get along on a friendship level at least, I couldn't deal with someone who is really conservative or religious.

I don't wish for anyone to feel they have to stay "in the closet" but my ideal marriage would be to a very wealthy gay man, that way there is no expectation of sex.

holdheart Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?14th-Aug-2012 11:53 pm (UTC)
Yes. It would have to be somewhat mutually beneficial though, as in companionship or something. I wouldn't pretend to be in love with someone from the start.
cricketgrl Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?15th-Aug-2012 12:11 am (UTC)
I did it once when I was very young, did not last long because I'm overly demanding. Most of the rich men I've met want submissive women. That doesn't fly with me so I was dumped lol.
kurtvonnegut 15th-Aug-2012 12:18 am (UTC)
watch everyone say yes and then in the next post about a woman dating an athlete go at her for being a ~gold digger~

absolutely not, it never ends well, men will always find a way to control you with it or hold it over your head.

but most women don't seem to understand this/care.

zootycoonlady Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?15th-Aug-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
If it was PURELY for money (let's say I have zero sexual attraction towards this person, his personality is okay, we get along fine) he'd have to be like worth 7 million plus for me to say yes. Ugh, even then I won't know. I'm fairly low maintenance and right now I'm financially stable, so money doesn't really entice me, unless it was like a MASSIVE amount of money.

If it was someone who I did lust/like/admire, then hell yes, money is an added bonus of not having to worry about your finances.
heyx_lyla Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?15th-Aug-2012 02:50 am (UTC)
Nope. My mother always told me to make sure I'm making my own money and to not get married until I've established a career. The man having all of the money gives him too much power/control over everything.

The thought of not making my own money and having to depend solely on a husband literally gives me anxiety attacks.
xdecadentx Re: Would you marry for money, ONTD?15th-Aug-2012 01:15 pm (UTC)
I always thought I would until I had the option and turned it down.
oceanhue 14th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
I hate the word gold-digger. Why are there countless derogatory words for women, but none for men? What about these rich disgusting men that are only dating these women because of their physical appearance? How are you going to go in on a woman for hitting up a rich man, when the rich dude is using her as a blow-up doll?

Ninja plz
josiefier 14th-Aug-2012 10:53 pm (UTC)
Co-signing.
blahblahcakes64 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
Golddigger is gender-neutral, imo. It's like the young boytoys who shack up with elderly rich designers. It happens on both ends.
deethy 14th-Aug-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
lol no, you ask the average person who they imagine a gold digger is and they'll answer a woman. almost all "definitions" you find of the term refer to a woman as well.
killapoohbear 14th-Aug-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
That doesn't make the word "golddigger" a gender neutral term though.

i like the slogan because i get that it's athletics/gold medals/olympics and as an athlete i'm like YEAH GOLD MEDALS I WANT ONE but i don't like that's only available for women. i'm not going to get my panties in a bunch but would it be that hard to offer it to men and women? it's not a massive deal to me but it was poor planning. :/
kamikashi 14th-Aug-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
yeah i automatically thought the olympics gold medals when looking at this shirt but only making it for women is the sexist part.
anchors_oceans 14th-Aug-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
completely agree. the first thing i thought when i saw it was I NEED TO BUY THESE FOR ME AND MY COUSIN FOR CROSS FIT TRAINING<33

i'm bummed it's not offered for everyone, obviously a poor decision, but i'll probably still buy it because i like it lol.
