Backlash over supermodels’ role in Closing Ceremony

The Olympics Closing Ceremony is supposed to be a celebration of the athletes who, for the last 17 days, have shed blood, sweat and tears with the goal of winning glory and bringing pride to their nations (also, it's a giant party).

Still, it was a bit of a head-scratcher when London's ceremony included a segment that put the spotlight on … supermodels.

Rail-thin, slightly unhealthy-looking supermodels, with complicated histories. Great Britain's Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell led the catwalk contingent that paid homage to British designers such as Alexander McQueen and Victoria Beckham.

The Twitter-verse exploded with disapproval. Moss, who allegedly used drugs in 2005, in particular took some heat.

Was there no Vivienne Westwood going on then? because I didn't hear them announce her and was surprised.

considering that probably the majority of girls here aren't truly happy with their own body, the comments on this site are baffling and pathetic. smdh at all the displaced self-hate.

this is a very mean and counter productive article. just because they're models doesn't make them any less of a woman, and it's extremely RUDE, MEAN, AND CHILDISH to bring up someone's past drug problems and eating disorders when they're doing something for their country.

@rebeccakesby1: Sorry why have we got super models in the closing ceremony when we've had so many REAL women over last two weeks????

Obviously Rebecca Kesby knows something we don't--the supermodels were all holograms. Tupac, what have you started??

Blah blah blah, more bitter people picking on models. None of them even looked anorexic, they looked fine.

And rme at them picking on Kate Moss for being a drug addict when Russel Brand all of those rock musicians they featured probably did WAY more drugs than she ever did.

The whole ceremony was such a let-down, especially cause they had set the bar so high with the opening ceremony. I wish they had focused more on the international spirit of the Olympic Games instead of once again showing how great GB is (they had done that in the opening ceremony already, where it was apt and charming!).
That model parade was so distinctive for the ceremony that seemed to have no concept: Oh look! We also got supermodels! And here they are!!

These specific models were misplaced imo. Would have been better off putting Olympic champions in designer clothes. The anorexia comments are unnecessary though.
