NBC developing drama about Cleopatra

Photobucket

If we can’t get Rome back on HBO, would a series about Cleopatra do?

NBC is developing a drama about the infamous queen of Egypt. (Talk about your period dramas!) Penned by Michael Seitzman (North Country), the project is from Lorenzo Di Bonaventura Pictures and ABC Studios. As first reported by Deadline, NBC has ordered a put pilot — TV speak for a project that must air, lest the net wants to pay substantial penalty fees.

The last time Cleopatra showed up on TV was in the HBO drama Rome, which featured Lyndsey Marshal in the recurring role. Cleopatra has always been depicted as an incredible and sexy beauty, so the search for perfect actress should be a fascinating one. (Though seriously, doesn’t this seem like a role made for Homeland’s Morena Baccharin Baccarin?)

NBC's getting so desperate they're now allowing ABC to produce for them. Sign of the times.

Recommendations on good books about Cleopatra? I found Antony and Cleopatra by Colleen McCullough at Value Village but haven't read it yet.

Not so much Cleopatra, but Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran was actually decent. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever read but it was a fun read.

This is straight up bio but i learned a ton and it made me really love her: http://www.amazon.com/Cleopatra-Life-Stacy-Schiff/dp/0316001945/ref=as_li_tf_sw?linkCode=wsw&tag=bookblog03-20

this is historical fantasy but I love this book so I'm linking anyway: http://www.amazon.com/Hand-Isis-Jo-Graham/dp/0316068012/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344734734&sr=1-1&keywords=hand+of+isis

Thanks! Historical fantasy/fiction books are one of my fave genres. I'm obsessed with reading all I can about the Borgia's, Marie Antoinette and King Henry (actually Tudor England in general)!

Cleopatra, by Stacey Schiff. So good.

The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George. Fucking AMAZING book. It's super long but really well written and entertaining. I read it for the first time about two months ago and I'll probably read it again soon because I loved it so much.

Even as a child, I cringed so much at this.

Didn't they all end up having kids really young and no music careers in the end?

I think I remember one of them being on the identity parade on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, so whatever happened to them they probably weren't too successful in the long run. :|

My roommate did a little concert early in his career and they were part of the lineup. Apparently, they were big-ass divas and didn't even bother doing sound check, so he kicked them off the show. They also demanded a limo to the airport, he hung up on their management.

Hmm... what other interesting female historical figures would make for a good TV series?

I'd love one on Boudicca, but I heard the ITV series from a few years back was tacky as hell.

And even then, historical TV shows should probably only be done by networks that have the budget to do them right, like HBO or something.
amkf 12th-Aug-2012 03:17 am (UTC)
Eleanor of Aquitaine
therealycats 12th-Aug-2012 03:59 am (UTC)
omg that would be amazing

I'm actually kind of interested in a Nefertiti project as others have mentioned. As interesting as Cleopatra's life is to read about, so much stuff just gets so...ugh, I can't even. There has been so much focus on her anyway.

Even though my forte when it comes to this stuff is basically European history, one historical novel I read a while back that was interesting to me was Empress by Shan Sa, about Wu Zetian. I think that could be interesting as well.

The only other ones who are popping to mind right now have already had shows on Showtime, so.

Oh, I've also really gotten interested in Nell Gwynn over the past few years. Actually I think a show about Charles II's mistresses overall would be pretty interesting.
ciara_belle 12th-Aug-2012 01:47 pm (UTC)
I would also love to see this, but, and not to dismiss Nell, with more focus on some of Charles' other mistresses. I feel like Nell is the one who always appears the most in movies and is the best known, but they don't mention Barbara or Louise, who were certainly more important as power brokers in Charles' court. I'd love to see a series that really looked at all the mistresses and the culture of the times.

But lbr, I'd probably have as much fun picking out the historical inaccuracies as anything.
sunshinesky 12th-Aug-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
Empress Matilda. I've always wanted to see something about her. Her character was in Pillars of the Earth a little bit, but I'd like to see something focused on her.

Also, Theodora I. She would be interesting.

Catherine the Great
ciara_belle 12th-Aug-2012 01:38 pm (UTC)
I would love a good movie about Mary Tudor, but I don't know about a series.

IA with the other suggestions of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Theodora. Nefertiti would also be awesome.
